Here are some quick notes to pass along from Nebraska’s full-pads practice on Monday morning…

***Offensive coordinator Troy Walters said pretty much all of the offensive install was complete at this point and now the focus was refining details and mastering the scheme.

***Walters said Monday was not a good day for the offense, but he credited the defense for playing a big part in that. He said the offense has learned this spring that if they don’t bring their A game every day, the defense “is going to embarrass us.”

***Walters said Andre Hunt has made a big jump this offseason, and a lot of that is just from growing up and maturing over the past year. He said Hunt was “lackadaisical” at times last season and didn’t really know the offense well enough, but now he’s focused and showing the type of mental toughness necessary to be an impact receiver.

***Hunt said he realized there was a major opportunity this year with the wide receiver depth chart, and that’s helped him take on a sense of urgency that has dialed him in this spring.

***Walters said they’re still being cautious with Cam Jurgens to not overwork him risk any injury setbacks, but he’s really impressed in the work he’s been able to do. Walters said Jurgens was exactly the type of athlete they want at center, and he’s also got the strength to hold his own against Big Ten nose guards.

***Walters said the challenge for the tight ends this year was to step up as bigger playmakers in the passing game. They know it’s a talented group, and they’re going to scheme to get them in one-on-one coverage matchups this season. “They’ve got to win those,” Walters said.

***Quarterback Noah Vedral said he’s not bitter about seeing so many college QBs transfer and become immediately eligible. He said his path at Nebraska was what it was, and he would never wish having to sit out for a season on anyone because of how hard it was on him.

***Vedral said he’s up to about 195-198 pounds.

***Quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco said Nebraska pretty much only scrimmaged on Saturday, and it was not a good day for the offense, especially the QBs. He said he asked Vedral if an alien had taken over his body because of some of the uncharacteristic mistakes Vedral made.

***To the QBs’ credit, Verduzco said Monday was a much better day.

***Running backs coach Ryan Held said Maurice Washington had a good scrimmage on Saturday.

***Walters said one name that keeps coming up at running back this spring is walk-on Brody Belt. He said Belt is working at the Duck-R and has continued to make plays as a runner and a receiver.

***Held said Jaylin Bradley has shown flashes this spring but needs to improve his consistency. He said Bradley needed to get lower when he runs and not be so upright with the football.

***Held said the defensive line might be the most improved unit on the team since last season. He said the pass rush from the front four has been much better, not only in getting to the QB but also in collapsing the pocket and breaking down pass plays.

***Held said Alex Davis and Tyrin Ferguson had really stood out as pass rushers out of the base defense, and NU’s inside linebackers had been really good all spring.

***Held said the staff wasn’t worried about only having one commitment in the 2020 class right now, especially after a really productive junior day this weekend.

***Vedral was asked if Tim Miles ever reached out to him about joining the basketball team this season when NU's numbers got low. He said "no," but "would've loved to help if he got the call."

When asked who his starting five on the current football team would be, Vedral said Austin Allen, Alex Davis, Christan Banker and Adrian Martinez would round out his squad.

Overall, he added the Fred Hoiberg hire got the entire locker room's attention and they are excited to see what he can do at NU.

On another note, Verduzco said he's so locked into his own world, he didn't even know who Fred Hoiberg was.
