LJS: Huskers run into trouble in 4-2 loss to LSU

Nebraska is still trying to win on a consistent basis. On Sunday, it was mistakes on the basepaths that derailed the Huskers.

Seventh-ranked LSU doesn't need any help. The Tigers are a championship-caliber team, and proved that with a 4-2 win over the Huskers on the final day of the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park.

LSU shortstop Alex Bregman made a nice catch running toward left field on a ball hit by Austin Christensen with a runner on first base to end the game and give the Huskers a 1-2 record in the three-day tournament.

"This isn't the first time we've played a good baseball team and it's not the first time we've seen a team hit the ball hard," Nebraska coach Darin Erstad said. "We gave ourselves an opportunity to win, and again, we were on the short end of making plays. We had too many mistakes on the bases. That's my fault."

Nebraska starter Derek Burkamper (1-1) settled in after allowing three runs over the first three innings to keep the Huskers in the game. The right-hander wasn't helped by the baserunning miscues.

Twice Nebraska (7-6) had a hitter lead off an inning with a hit, only to make an out on the bases. Tanner Lubach, who had two of Nebraska's nine hits, opened the second with a double off LSU (15-1) starter Jake Godfrey (3-0). Lubach was doubled off third, completing a 6-5 double play. Steven Reveles singled leading off the sixth, then was picked off at first.

Earlier, Ben Miller's two-out single in the first scored Luis Alvarado for a 1-0 Nebraska lead, but Miller was out at first after stumbling rounding the base and trying to return to the bag.

"Mistakes are going to happen and we have to get over those mistakes and keep moving on," Christensen said. "LSU came out and threw a punch and Derek Burkamper threw well and kept us in the game."

Burkamper, who allowed three runs in six innings, did not allow a run and only one hit in his final three innings. Four of the six hits Burkamper allowed came in the first inning, when LSU scored twice.

"I attacked them with a fastball and unfortunately they got a couple of hits in the first inning and then we decided we need to mix things up and pitch backwards, and started with curveballs and changeups," Burkamper said. "After that, everything was working pretty well."

Jake Meyers pitched a scoreless two outs in relief of Burkamper. Jeff Chesnut allowed an eighth-inning run in his 1 1/3 innings. The Huskers got within 3-2 in the seventh on Christensen's bases-loaded single that scored Jake Placzek, a pinch runner for Miller.

Christensen's seventh-inning at-bat against Godfrey, coming with one out, drew the loudest crowd reaction in the game from both LSU and Nebraska fans.

"When the crowd's getting a little loud, like in my third at-bat, I stayed calm and stuck to the approach and got a good pitch," Christensen said. "You can hear it (the noise) but you got to embrace it. I just tried to enjoy that at-bat."

Reveles followed Christensen by hitting into a 6-4-3, inning-ending double play.

LJS: Huskers run into trouble in 4-2 loss to LSU

NU: Huskers Outhit Tigers, but Fall 4-2

Houston, Texas - The Nebraska baseball team (7-6, 0-0 Big Ten) hung tough against the No. 7 LSU Tigers (14-2, 0-0 SEC) on Sunday afternoon at Minute Maid Park, but came out on the losing end of a 4-2 decision.

The Huskers had the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning following a two-out single by Austin Darby, but 2013 Brooks Wallace award winner Alex Bregman made running catch in shallow left field on a ball of the bat of Austin Christensen to end the game.

Sophomore Derek Burkamper fell to 1-1 on the year, but gave the Huskers 6.0 solid innings after getting off to a shaky start. The sophomore allowed two runs on four hits in the first, but did get out of a base-loaded jam to end the inning. Following the rough first inning, Burkamper settled in and allowed four base runners and just two hits over the next five innings.

LSU freshman Jake Godfrey went 7.0 inning in the win. A 2014 21st-round pick by the Braves, Godfrey allowed a pair of runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out four. Entering Sunday, Godfrey had after issued nine walks over his first 14.1 innings of the year.

The Huskers jumped on the scoreboard first on a two-out RBI single by Ben Miller in the first. Miller's single drove in Luis Alvarado, who singled earlier in the inning, and it looked like the Huskers would have runners on the corners for Tanner Lubach, but Miller rounded first base too far and was thrown out to end the inning.

The Huskers ran themselves out of inning again in the second on a line-out double play. Lubach was on third with one out after starting the inning with a double, but the inning quickly ended when Christensen lined out to the shortstop and Lubach was doubled off at third base.

With a 2-1 lead, Bregman started the third for LSU with a single and after stealing second base he advanced to third on a fly out. The aggressive base running paid off when he scored on a RBI groundout to give LSU a 3-1 lead.

A base running error hurt the Huskers again in the sixth when Steven Reveles started the inning with a single, but was then picked off to clear the bases. Schleppenbach followed with a single before the inning ended on a pair of fly outs.

The Husker mounted a rally in the seventh when Darby walked to load the bases with one out. Christensen delivered a bloop single that scored one run, cutting LSU's lead to 3-2. LSU stuck with Godfrey in tough situation and the freshman got Reveles to bounce into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

LSU added an insurance run in the eighth when Grayson Byrd beat out a double-play ball that would have ended the inning, but instead Andrew Stevenson scored.

After playing 13 straight games on the road to start the season, the Huskers are set to start a 16-game homestand at Hawks Field on Tuesday, March 10, when they host the Northern Colorado Bears for the 2015 home opener at 1:35 p.m. Following a two-game series with the Bears, the Huskers host Florida Gulf Coast next weekend at Hawks Field.

LSU: Baseball Extends Win Streak, 4-2, Over Nebraska

HOUSTON - Freshman right-hander Jake Godfrey worked a career-high seven innings Sunday to lead second-ranked LSU to a 4-2 win over Nebraska in the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park.

LSU (15-1) won all three of its games in the Houston College Classic and extended its win streak to 12 straight games. The streak is LSU's longest since the 2013 Tigers won 15 in a row from late March to mid-April.

Nebraska dropped to 7-6 with Sunday's loss.

LSU will play host to McNeese State at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. The game can been viewed online on SEC Network +, accessible at WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app. The game can also be heard on affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network and in the Geaux Zone at www.LSUsports.net.

Godfrey (3-0) limited the Cornhuskers on Sunday to two runs on eight hits in seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

"Jake was outstanding today; he had to overcome some adversity and adjust to the strike zone, but he did a great job," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "I thought he pitched a tremendous ball game; each time he's pitched he's gotten better and better."

The loss was charged to Cornhusker starter Derek Burkamper (1-1), who allowed three runs on six hits in six innings with two walks and three strikeouts.

Nebraska grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as leftfielder Luis Alvarado singled, moved to second on a walk to third baseman Blake Headley, and scored on a single by designated hitter Ben Miller.

LSU responded with two runs in the bottom of the first as designated hitter Chris Chinea lined an RBI single and third baseman Conner Hale belted a run-scoring double.

The Tigers extended the lead to 3-1 in the third when shortstop Alex Bregman singled, stole second base, moved to third on Chinea's deep flyout, and scored on Hale's RBI groundout to third base.

The Cornhuskers narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the seventh on an RBI single by first baseman Austin Christensen.

LSU added a run in the bottom of the eighth as centerfielder Andrew Stevenson started the inning with a single against Nebraska reliever Jeff Chesnut. Stevenson moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Michael Papierski, and after third baseman Danny Zardon walked, Stevenson scored on second baseman Grayson Byrd's groundout to second base.

Godfrey was relieved to start the top of the eighth by left-hander Zac Person, who issued a two-out walk before ending the inning with a strikeout of Nebraska third baseman Blake Headley.

LSU right-hander Parker Bugg pitched the ninth to earn his first save of the season and the third of his career. Bugg retired pinch hitter Christian Cox on a popout in foul territory before catcher Tanner Lubach flied out to right field for the second out.

Rightfielder Austin Darby singled to keep the inning alive, but Bugg ended the game with an infield popout by Christensen.

"Overall, I'm very pleased with the way we performed this weekend," Mainieri said. "The stats may not reflect it, but I thought we swung the bats well and had a lot of hard outs. Our pitching and defense were excellent in all three games, and I'm very proud of the guys.

"We played in a tremendous environment in a big-league ball park against some very good teams. It was a great experience for our players and something we can build upon as the season moves forward."
