It is encouraging if not even a little inspiring to know that there are college football coaches who not only believe this but can articulate it. His rationale is why I feel so strongly about the mission of intercollegiate athletics and the value of scholarship programs. The NCAA is a gazillion miles from perfect, but the essential task of intercollegiate athletics is to provide opportunity which, when the student-athlete takes advantage of it, makes our society better. Opportunity is what started this country, and opportunity is what propels it.
