Mo Washington seems to be in trouble

Now your just being ridiculous with the post. “Please explain in detail what the staff did in detail”??? Are you serious with this?? None of us know what Frost or any of the coaches did or didn’t do let alone explain in detail. TheBeav, I tend to like a lot of your posts and agree with them but this is just ridiculous. Your acting like YOU KNOW what happened, and what the coaches did or didn’t do. None of us do, my suggestion is we wait and see how this plays out and let Frost do his presser (which I’m sure he will at some point) and explain what happened and what he knew and didn’t know. Stop chopping heads before you know for sure, 100% for sure, what happened or didn’t happen.
Again, please list all the things we know the coaches did about this so that they look like they're out in front of the story. I've got a couple more hours.

You guys don't get it. It's a life crisis for Mo, and it's a PR crisis for the team. Nobody is calling for heads, eff off with that melodrama. They botched the PR on this. That's the point.

The NUMBER ONE RULE of PR crises it Get. Out. In. Front. Of. The. Story. Did they get out in front of it? No they did not.

What's the consequence of that for the Ath Dept and the staff (read: Scott)? Anything they do now or claim to have done is going to look like a C.Y.A. because they got outed about knowing of this since last March. Instead of them having control of the story and saying they took measures because they have integrity and they take all this seriously.

The look that it creates is that they lawyered him up with nothing less than the State AG and then stiff-armed the investigation until after football season. That's a very bad look whether that's what they intended to do or not.

Ever hear the phrase "perception is reality" boys? It isn't, of course, but that's what they're up against.

Will he get convicted of felony child porn? Probably not. Is it still an incredibly weird, stupid, malicious and shitty thing to have done? It sure is. The question is how big a story it ends up being and whether the public demands their pound of flesh.

Fact is people will forget all about it and stop caring by September. Memories are shot and the news cycle is long. Personally I don't mind doing without guys who make me go, "Ugh I don't wanna have to think about what you did but please score a touchdown..."

Scummy behavior all around by these guys. Washington has a lot of growing up to do. It's likely that this incident will not result in dismissal from the team, but the fact that it happened in the first place ups the probability that he won't be with the program in a year. There should be an intervention with an opportunity for the kid to have a moment of clarity.

A rape on video that ended with the perpetrators getting probation? Sometimes people aren’t proud of what they’ve done when it becomes public knowledge and choose the easiest defense of their own actions. Not saying that’s the case here, but the timelines, legal repruccusions to others, self admitted shame and her reaching out to him suggest that there’s more to it that’s what’s in the article to me. No was wrong to send the video, however he did send it to her, not spread it across the Internet.

Yep!

to repeat, It was consensual sex between teens. It was not sexual assault. The crime is in possessing and sending child porn. He did this while a minor supposedly. Usually most prosecutors handle cases involving teenagers and sex videos judiciously. Still stupid but I know of cases where 17 year old boys assaulted younger boys and all they got was probation and counseling. Pisses me off but that's generally what happens.
She's saying it wasn't consensual.

This is why I don't sleep at night as the father of a 14 year old son. It's tough to get any child (boy or girl) through the teen/college years. At times if feels impossible. I absolutely 100% will be reading this article to my son tonight. This shit is toxic and a stupid childish act can literally ruin your life. I feel bad for the girl and for Maurice. He should be punished, he should not be ruined. Not sure the current atmosphere will allow for anything less.
Social media is downright terrible for kids and it's only gotten worse with snapchat and instagram.

Obviously none of us know all the facts. But the act the two guys were punished for took place when they were juveniles and therefore were likely not considered criminal in nature. If Mo was an adult the act for which he is being investigated is a criminal act and possibly a felony. It's when it took place.
sending or possessing the video still would be a criminal act even as a minor. The difference is how the case is viewed and prosecuted by the judicial system. If Washington was over 18 when he sent the video I would imagine he could have different consequences. Dunno. That's why we should let the judicial system and staff worry about it. It's not our problem to handle.

I kinda forgot about that.

As far as all of this goes, I am going to see how it all plays out before I rush to judgement one way or another.

Fully agree with this. This is what I’m suggesting TheBeav to do above. It’s almost sounding like he may have sent this back when he was in high school, which lead to him being kicked out and why he moved back to Cali. That would explain why Frost allowed him to play this past season and assumed all was good. Agreed, there’s definitely more to this and NONE OF US knows what happened, WHEN it happened or any of that. Definitely let this play out and I hope the best for Mo Washington.

I could be wrong here, but I have a hard time believing a kid in the video would have got probation if they recorded a rape. Video taping and distributing consensual acts with a minor sounds more like probation....i would imagine an investigator or detective could tell the difference by watching (what a terrible job that would be, dead serious). Again, could be wrong

Wasn’t Mo a minor when he sent this?

The staff and athletic admin knew about it when it would have been easy to just chuck the kid out of the recruiting bin. It really looks like they prioritized his highly valued FB skills over a truly awful thing he did to another human being. Does not reflect well on the program at all.

She's saying it wasn't consensual.
Correct. That's what she says now. Does the video support that? The only people who know that are the people who have the video. Did they prosecute the kids who allegedly raped her? It doesn't sound as if Washington was involved in the acts.

Where are you getting that the staff knew about it during his recruitment?

Frost's own words:

“Aside from GPA, when we’re recruiting kids, the next thing we’re going to look at is what kind of kid the person is,” Frost said. “And part of that is looking through every ounce of social media we can possibly look at. So if some kid tweeted something four years ago that’s bad, we’re going to know about it.

“And I’ll tell you this right now — if there’s anything negative about women, if there’s anything racial or about sexuality, if there’s anything about guns or anything like that, we’re just not going to recruit you, period. Piece of advice for you — what you put on social media, that’s your résumé to the world. That’s what you’re trying to tell the world you’re all about. That’s how you’re advertising yourself. Be smart with that stuff.”

Frost said prospects shouldn’t tweet anything their mom wouldn’t be OK with reading.

“We will quickly drop somebody if there’s something bad on there,” Frost reiterated about social media.

OK-really what were they supposed to do? He wasn't charged with a darn thing last year. It took them this long to even file charges. So they were supposed to kick a guy off the team for doing something which hadn't even resulted in criminal charges yet?

Biggest thing all kids need to understand is that if you post naked pictures even if your a minor you going to be in deep trouble, unless you have money to hire a lawyer, theirs a case in Jefferson county Nebraska from a couple years ago and high schools kids posting nude pictures at a beer party, I'm still waiting for some charges, the lady putting on the beer party has a very wealthy dad.

Nope. In most states (including Nebraska) Juvenile proceedings are civil matters, not criminal. The purpose is not to punish, but to rehabilitate. The basis for the juvenile case is a criminal act (could be other basis also, neglect, etc) but it is not a criminal case and does not result in a criminal conviction.

No thanks because, I for one, don’t know the whole facts, let alone all the facts from both side. Again you jump right back into asking people to explain what coaches did or didn’t do, when no one knows because we are not them. But YOU act like you know. Please tell BEAV, since you know what Frost does or doesn’t do, tell me what happened, In FULL DETAIL, what Frost did and his step by step decision making in this process....you know...since YOU KNOW FOR FACT.

how far back do you go? This supposedly was video that was passed around the whole school. Whatever. Frost will have to make the decision if the kid is worth the baggage. We've got enough depth to be fine without him. Personally I hope he keeps him, suspends him and helps him get his life in order.

It sure does give that look, does it not? One could argue that is not a good look, couldn't one?

I'm not rushing to judgement, however, here are two things that have not yet been disputed.

Washington sent a text message of a video, that involved 3 naked minors involved in a sex act. It doesn't matter, for Washington, if it was rape or not, he distributed child porn. Soon after the school learned there was a video, they instructed everyone that had a copy to erase any copies they had. Washington did not.

Within a month of learning about the charges, Trinity Christian, expelled Washington from their school, coincidence? Maybe, However I would be more concerned if it didn't involve this and Washington was expelled for another transgression. Regardless, they had enough information to make a decision to kick him out of their school, this was before, he attended one day of classes at Nebraska. That is concerning.

I'll take "Quotes that haven't aged well" for $1,600 please, Alex.

A guy that worked for me had a son at Norris HS about 5 years ago and a similar situation arose. There were investigators at the HS working with administrators, I was told they were demanding to inspect phones looking for a certain video or photo. He about had a heart attack because his son basically told him "everyone" had been sent the video/photo. It is a daunting world.

Yeah, Frost should just cut him loose. One guy isn't worth the bad PR. Easy to say since he's not my son, but that's the world we live in unfortunately. This will be on ESPN for sure.

I don’t remember when he was expelled from Trinity but according to the article he sent her that text in March so you may have hit the nail on the head on this..

From the OP's article; "Although she did not report the incident as a rape at the time because she says she felt ashamed, Taylor told NBC Bay Area the video depicts a sexual assault, not a consensual sex act. Taylor alleges the teen boys in the video forced her into having sex after telling her they were going to a fast food restaurant. NBC Bay Area is not naming the teens because they were juveniles at the time and were never charged with sexual assault."

Correct (from what I understand) in that Mo wasn't involved in the acts.

So he can transfer to bama or Clemson, didn't look like the wife beater issue at Ohio state hurt them

Dang, these hoes be keepin a brother down.

Dang, now I"ll NEVER be recruited to Nebraska. SAD FACE.

Oh and. WITCH HUNT. Typical of the times.

No one is entitled to an athletic scholarship at NU. It isn't pearl clutching to be of the opinion that this was at the very least really thoughtless behavior. Having said that, the kid should be able to learn from his stupidity. Some kids have the ability to make stupid mistakes after having that opportunity. I have the nagging feeling that Mo may be one of these.

That's not how it works, sweetheart. It's not my job to prove they didn't *secretly* do anything about it. It's their job to prove this isn't what it looks like, that they knew this kid did something real shitty but tried to sweep it under the rug because damn can he juke a defender.

It's going to become their job to explain to reporters why they continued to honor his commitment after learning of this incident before he ever qualified academically. Then they'll have to answer as to what, if any punitive actions they took at that time. If none, they'll be asked why.

Like I said, they're behind the story. They're the ones now who are going to get grilled about this when instead they could have taken control of the narrative and made a big show of putting him into a counseling program, etc. Instead the University has made zero public acknowledgement that they knew of this for 11 months.

Ho Lee Cow

Debate assault versus consent if you want, I'll set that aside for now. WTF is he doing sending it back to her?
Because he's still pissed about her having a three some with two dudes? Maybe when they were dating? Maybe not? I don't know. Let's let the facts come out. Stupid to keep the video and send it back.

For anyone else who has had an iPhone for a long time, has just rolled everything forward with new iphone purchases, and doesn't delete stuff or even know they still have some of the pictures they took in 2012, I can see how he could have had this video on his phone from a long time ago. The chick that cheated on him messages him now that he's at Nebraska, and he remembers he has her video. Sends it to her, reminds her to not reach out to him again.

I'm not condoning it. I'm saying there are scenarios that could be true. The worst case scenario could be true as well. Let's wait and see before we throw this kid under the bus.

So. The guys who perpetrated the act were not publicly punished anyway, but the kid who was stupid enough to keep the video is going to be. Seems about right for California law. Normally, in my state, IF a minor commits a violent crime, which rape certainly is, they are tried as an adult. If tried as a juvenile and convicted they end up incarcerated at least until the age of 18. I would have to think there has to be some question at least of whether or not this was rape. This stinks of a smear by an NBC affiliate of a football player. JMHO.
