I do not know how the rest of our season will play out. We could go 11-1 or 6-6. Probably somewhere in between.

But I do know one thing. Mike Riley and his staff have our program headed in the right direction. I have not been this optimistic about our program's future in a long time. These guys are the real deal. Just look at the level of organization, the recruiting, the excellent relations with fans and the media, the on field coaching and in game coaching adjustments etc... I am not a coach nor am I a football expert. Just a fan. But it does not take much knowledge to see that this staff does have the ability to take us where we want to go.

My deeper point in this is actually a plea to my fellow Husker fans. Give these guys time. Give these guys time to build this program without fan negativity no matter how this season plays out. My fear is that if we lose three or four of our next seven that the knives will be out.

We are in good hands with this staff. We need to be thinking long term progress not short term success. We are still playing with a short handed deck at some key spots due to Bo and company. But you can see that this staff is already recruiting to fill those needs.

I agree with everything you said, BUT if they would happen to collapse and finish 6-6 (per your note), that may suggest something went invredibly wrong and may bring to question all this momentum and direction you say the staff is on.
.I find it extremely unlikely to happen, but still.

I agree with your caveat. And I too doubt it will happen. But injuries can wreak havoc on a team that is thin. Just imagine if Tommy went down? I just want fans to be patient. Love this staff

I love what this staff is doing, and MR has exceeded my expectations. Of course, everybody loves a winner. That said, we all know some losses are coming and it's important to focus on the big picture here.

I agree that MR has this team headed in the right direction. He deserves time. But we also need to realistically grapple with the fact that his time is limited by age. Sure hope we are also working on a succession plan (note the word success is buried in there).

My motivation in posting this is that we are all, rightfully, very happy that we are 5-0. Nebraska is relevant again. Expectations have been raised. But there are many examples from the history of college football of teams that started 5-0 or 6-0, but then lost a bunch of games down the stretch. If that happens this year, and I am not saying it will, but if it happens to us this year I fear there will be all kinds of fans calling for Riley's head. I would hate to see that.

Unfortunately the naysayers cannot be controlled. Some were bashing the heck of the coaches and players in the Illinois game thread. Just keep trying to be the majority with positivity. That's all you can do. Because MR, staff, and players deserve it.

I can honestly say that I am proud of the program right now. While I have and will ALWAYS support this team, I haven't always been able to say I was proud. I think Coach Riley GETS it. He seems to have a clear vision of where he wants to take this program, and he and his staff appear to be marching in that singular direction. There are absolutely things to work on but when I compare this team to where they were a yr ago, I feel good about what I am seeing and where they seem to be heading.

Regardless of where things do end up, I am PROUD to see Mike Riley on the sidelines. That man had to correct so much more than what was happening on the field.
