McGuire out as WR Coach

Let's hope it's TO and not JoePa........ As far as I know the only coverup TO did was a player's gun and never for a rapist pedophile.
Not comparing the two. As icons of hundreds and hundreds of wins.
If you go across the country you will find that TO is not as highly respected as we think.
The PSU fans probably still think Joe walked on water.

TO’s play was the option dive PA that HH mastered. TO is still the man.
Stretch the field vertically and stretch the field horizontally. All great offensive coaches have eventually learned this most fundamental concept. The option pass is a play that can stretch the field vertically and horizontally at the same time. It's really the perfect play. TO's running the option and horizontal running game was in large part a setup for the option pass to strike vertically. And it worked to perfection so, so many times.

A large part of the problem is that clearly McGwire didn't know what he didn't know and apparently Satt couldn't help him. I suspect McGwire learned more in 3 weeks with Dana than than he had in 2 seasons with Satt.
this is entirely on Rhule.

no amount of excuses change that.

glad we have an actual football coach running the offense for the first time in Rhule's tenure and excited for more changes to the offensive staff.

He said recently that he talks to TO after every game. I understand his admiration of Joe but find it a little weird when he talks about it openly. Joe was from a generation that swept things like pedophilia and incest under the rug never to be talked about. Joe did a tremendous amount of good things for PSU and his players but looking the other way when it became obvious Sandusky was raping boys is an unforgiveable sin. I wish Rhule would never utter that name again.
I could not agree more. You simply cannot be a head coach and not know what is happening right under your nose.

They looked better under Dana than Satt, obviously. But I want a RBs Coach than can ID Talent and Recruit much better RBs than we’ve had in a long time.
He has a good RB prospect committed. Dana might keep him but if a change is made there it can wait. We just need to see how things shake out.

Obviously time will tell. I hear Jamarion Parker (incoming) and Mekhi Nelson (that I heard DH really likes) will be pretty special players IF they stick around and stay healthy. I believe both were recruited by Barthel. If DH wants someone new, he'd better be pretty good. I'd hate to get rid of a coach that has brought in two seemingly excellent (or elite) young players that haven't even touched the football. I believe Barthel was also instrumental in landing Dowdell. Maybe he is responsible for DD's improvement since arriving last winter.

The problem I have with McGuire and by extension Rhule is that IF they both knew, and they should have, that McGuire lacked the knowledge it took to get the best out of his guys doesn't mean he couldn't have shipped McGuire off somewhere after the season and spent some time with someone who is considered at the top of that WR coaching food chain.

If our WR's had come out this year, had decent separation, put some people on their back while legally blocking, the issue of the kid's age and experience would not be in question. OK?

It's about lack of performance and growth by physically talent receivers that is the bottom line. Garrett may develop into a great WR coach, but you can't go from Season 1 to Season 2 and show no growth. What did he learn and then apply from Year 1 to Year 2? Seems like nothing cause they brought in 2 kids and they showed the same inefficiency as the returning group.

How do you know if a position coach is able to improve a player and get the best out of him? You compare '23 version of Ty to the '24 version. Somebody coached that kid up. What about '23 John Bullock v. '24 version?

How about Lloyd '23 v '24 version? No difference. Bullock?

Teaching kids great technique, getting in their heads about constant improvement in their game.
That's what a real coach does.

And their improvement all started by Dana telling Barthel that the kids need to run to the hole and trust it will be there. Made a ton of difference and really how hard is that?

MR made the decision to change OC's and is letting that OC choose his staff. Not sure what the AD would have to do with it.
Baseless.

This is a good thing. We’ve needed good leadership for a very long time.

The AD leads the department and the football program is the crown jewel.

To think he had nothing to do with a program altering decision is ignorance of the highest order.

Baseless? To assume the Head Football Coach and not the AD is making the calls on assistant coaching hires?

To assume the AD is, requires serious mental gymnastics, wild conspiracy theory stuff.

Sorry, but when you throw a dart at the board that really has no base…you can’t say someone is baseless when they call you out on it.

To assume the HC made the decision all on his own is pure fan fiction.

The AD put his employee on a PIP. That is all, and it’s exactly what happened.

Again, a good thing. We want proven leaders leading.

Do you know that as fact? Or is it the world according to kong?

It’s as baseless as saying the AD is forcing all these changes.

However, I find it more practical that Rhule is doing an autopsy of the offense and saying OC, WR coach isn’t good enough and bringing in a new OC and letting him choose his key staff members and trusting him to get it done.

This narrative that Rhule doesn’t know how to run a program is baseless as well. You don’t get to that level without being an extreme competitor. I think Rhule is capable and doing all of this on his very own … like a big boy.

In the long run, this portal action and having to get down to 105 may be, probably will be, the best thing that has happened to Matt in his career.

On the surface, the defense is being ripped apart and we have another 40+ players to go. Matt is a teddy bear who is having his very soft veneer, and his "love" for these departures hardened in ways that will be good for him.

Going forward it will be the onus on winning NOW, not waiting to develop kids that he genuinely likes moving on after all the work, the staff, the time, the money and the investment Matt and NU put into these kids.
" For what?" To try to develop them here only to have them take that investment to a new location.

Cut throat coaches have assistants and players come and go and it bothers them very little because they are in the business for themselves only. Matt is more of a soft touch.

It took TO 20 years to develop into the type of coach like Switzer, Bowden, McCartney, Danny Ford, Jackie Sherrill, Galen Hall, etc, and other coaches till he finally realized that you can't just keep getting beat by the thugs from Miami (Fla), FSU, and OU. It took McCartney in Colorado, who on the surface was religious, less than a few years to arm that squad with lots of uninspiring citizens who were tremendous talents on the field.

The harder Matt's demeanor becomes, the more successful he might become. We tried a couple like Gilbert and Mazz, but they didn't have what it takes. This year he got a dose of dealing with Mazzucua, and he didn't like it.

We can't have all upstanding citizens and choir boys as the main cogs of the system. Well, we can, but we'll also continue to get our asses kicked.

Matt has to understand that there are rare ones like Dylan who will probably be here for 3 years, but the majority of the others will not show the same loyalty to him as he shows to them. It just is what it is. Money, money, money.

Yea superiors never give suggestions to their subordinates on how to improve

Literally never happens, especially when they own the budget

Lol

So you have insider information?
I guess. it's not a secret.

Dannen is far from the first AD to inherit a coaching staff and suggest changes be made in an effort to improve performance.

it's the literal first thing anyone running an organization does in his situation. Nebraska Football is no different.

Absolutely. No AD is picking position coaches for their Head Coach, that just doesn’t happen. And in this case, that position cosch is a guy that has worked with the new OC at every stop. It’s just common sense that it was Dana’s hire. Just like it was common sense Dana was Rhule’s hire. But Kong want us to believe it is the AD picking him these coaches? OK.
I will email my friend tomorrow.

I think I misspoke if I inferred the AD tells the coach who to hire, but I do feel they tell the coach a position needs to be upgraded, then I believe it's left up to the coach to find someone within the scope of the allowable money he has.

You didn’t infer that, but that is exactly what kong is claiming. The AD made these decisions, not the Head Coach. There is no way that is accurate.

I believe an AD will ask a coach to evaluate their program. What are the issues? In this case the offense. So what are you going to do about it? In this case hire a new AD and let him have input in offensive staffing decisions. It really is common sense.

this is literally exactly what I said.

Dannen gave Rhule marching orders that a change on offense was needed. not in the offseason, now.

without Dannen's involvement, there is no Dana. because there's no chance Rhule would do that all on his own mid-season.

you've been arguing with what you now say is common sense for weeks. classic.

I think it all stems from Dannen telling Rhule,
"We HAVE to go to a bowl game this year because we're gonna be asking a lot of people for money."

For Matt to stand pat with an offense led by Satt, put the bullseye right on Matt if NU failed to win #6, and with that those wide open purse strings, held by Dannen, would start to close.

Kind of an implied, "If you want to keep spending money, there has to be a return of 6 wins."

We have to pay him I believe one way or another. His WRs improved dramatically with Dana’s help. There would be no harm and zero cost to keeping him as an assistant WR coach.
Exactly he is good and sharp dude. The recruits seem to like him . He just doesn’t have to experience to coach a p4 wr room. The guy Dana just hired played for Dana at West Virginia that helps to he played the position GM never did. Let him watch and learn how to coach.

You mean like TO did with all of the thugs on the team in the 90's, with the rapes, the shootings and the beating of women? Plausible deniability, I didn't know it was happening vs I knew it was happening and did nothing. Pedophilia is just a more disgusting crime than some of the stuff that was going on in Lincoln.

Not a Paterno fan, I just think they holier than thou shit that gets spewed with regards to the past indiscretions within the Nebraska football program is comical.

You’re just guessing, I know. But if the AD needs to tell the football HC that “it’s important to win games” because I’m not sure you realize it, then you don’t have the right guy at HC.

Why is TE an afterthought? That's the kinda thinking that gets coaches fired. If you can upgrade at a position you upgrade.

My guess is they probably thought the special teams coach Foley was an afterthought also. How did that work out over the first couple years?

You wanna be the best their should be no coaching positions that are after thoughts.

Holla
Just look at Holgersen offenses from years past. He will have more 4 WR sets with no TEs than he does sets with even 1 TE.

He was basically using Satt's playbook and running a limited number of those plays. That is why he has Inside WR and Outside WR coaches

First of all read what I said in another post. I said people would be surprised that nationally they don't have that high of an opinion of Osborne.

Back in the day I said the day Brown or Osborne hid Muhammed's gun is the day they should have been fired or suspended for breaking the law. I never overlooked the thugs we had, I just said we never beat the Miami's, OU, FSU's until Tom started to do just as those coaches did. To this day, if you don't have half a dozen thugs on your team you're not gonna win anything big.

I also said, it took TO 20 years to arrive at the same point at Switzer, Bowden, McCartney, Jackie Sherrill, Danny Ford, Urban Meyer and Galen Hall from Florida, but, arrive he did.

I don't need a history lesson on NU football.

Yep

Rhule still can’t bring himself to fire his guys

Zero chance he makes this move in season if not made to by his supervisor

Also - coaches never evaluate the gaps in their teams performance. Rhule didn’t need Dannen telling him we needed to go to a bowl. He knew that had to happen.

I don’t doubt there are conversations between Rhule and Dannen but to give all credit to good decisions to Dannen is just not accurate or intellectually honest in my opinion.

My comment wasn’t as much a rebuttal of your post as much as it was just a comment about the topic in general.

Every time someone brings up Paterno on this board there is always a comment about the things he let go at Penn St. Yet when someone brings up the stuff Osborne let happen at Nebraska, there is always an excuse or rationalization.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. It was getting late when I responded.
