Marshall opting out of the Independent bowl against Army

Fine marshal the largest possible number you can to cover costs of the loss of the game. If a replacement teams accepts then the fine is offset by what can be agreed to by the bowl and the replacing team.

This is all just insane. But what can anyone do? This is the new normal.
Is it possible that in this new era of college football that the bowls are simply obsolete now? Instead of complaining about the transfer portal maybe we just need to expand the playoff to 20 teams and then end all other bowls. But what happened to Marshall could still happen in that scenario to one of the 20 teams.

I think they should still go play with who they have left. And let them play with new portal players if they have any additions. But no fines for dropping out of bowl game. These are extraordinary circumstances

Fine the coach that left and the players. Not the schools fault.

Yep and people forget they are exhibition games.

They have been lame for years but it is fun to have another game to watch and bet on!
There not exhibition games.. If that was the case it wouldn’t go on anyone’s record.. Correct.

I’m not surprised and was expecting this to happen sooner or later they got to put restrictions on the number of times you can transfer. The guys are only supposed to be in college for four years. Allow them one transfer and then that’s it. No excuses no exceptions once you use a transfer you are done.

Sue who, Marshall or Southern Miss?
Marshall. Play who you have. It's about getting younger players reps. The bowls spend money to bring these teams in, buy them swag, have competitions, parades sponsors etc to promote and show off their city. There's clearly damages if this turns out to be a forfeit and no game played

Should've canceled the Independence and sent Army to double-team Oklahoma in the Armed Forces Bowl. Take those gooners back to their prison days.

Duh

Been this way for a very long time
Yeah. Definitely been trending hard in that direction for a while now. So let me rephrase the question: is now the time to finally pull the plug on the bowls?

Heck, bowls got started as a chamber of commerce ploy in large, warm weather cities. They did not even count in the final polls until 1970 (AP) and 1971 (AP and UPI [coaches]). They had their full glory really in the 90’s with an explosion of bowls and the development of the BCS for one final natty game. Now with the transfer portal and 12 team playoff the whole edifice is about to collapse.

In some ways I am sad to see this. Bowls harken back to the days when college football really was about rewarding amateur student athletes with a post season trip to Miami or New Orleans or Pasadena. But the game is now a semi-pro system complete with big player payouts and de facto free agency. TV money dominates everything. The playoff will eventually expand beyond 12 teams. The end of the bowls is in sight

This is the schools fault, offered the coach a terrible extension so he let his contact expire, took a job at the last place team in the conference. Players were pissed so they entered the transfer portal.
