The Screen Pass thread got me thinking about who wins and who loses -- the systemic impact -- of calling plays that Tommy can throw. Of making Tommy safer and not throwing as many INTs. I'm also thinking about who they want to get the ball to (i.e. Cethan Carter, for instance). What routes and what throws do they want to make that work? What plays will we see more of and which less of?
Let's start here. What throws do they NOT want Tommy to make? Most dangerous/least effective.
* In pocket, downfield outside the hash. This one has to be close to top of list. See Iowa, Rutgers.
* Last year that dang screen pass. Get the feeling ANY pass where Tommy can't set feet is trouble.
* Interestingly, I don't remember a lot of deep passes being intercepted. Of course I don't recall many completed, either.
* (Insert)
Now. What throws are they setting Tommy up for this year? Least dangerous/most effective?
* Screens, quick hitters, short passes to backs and letting them pick up more yards after catch.
* Roll outs, narrow the field and throwing on the run
* Deep routes/stretch the field. Deep fade.
So who gets more balls thrown to them and at whose expense?
Here's my thinking -- and I'm totally open to correction/discussion on this. More balls: Newby, Ozigbo, Wilbon, Carter -- though I'm concerned about the types of throws that best fit him (might be higher risk).
Who gets less? Westerkamp -- I think so. Moore? Like him on jet sweep, WR screens -- same as last year. Reilly? From sounds of camp he's still a top target but I don't know the throws/routes. Morgan? Probably more just because he's so much better and Tommy likes to go to him (but again, what route/throw?).
How about DPE? Can Tommy safely and consistently throw the throws that best utilize DPE? WR screen, of course. No doubt. But what of others?
Of the X, Y, and Z positions, which position wins and which gets fewer throws? Does the slot receiver get fewer throws or run fewer routes?
Would love if some of you guys offer thoughts on pass routes, safe throws, and who might see more or less throws because of it.
