Luensmann Earns Pair of Freshman All-America Honors

Nebraska pitcher Chad Luensmann earned Freshman All-America honors from two publications this week, making him the first Husker since Pat Kelly in 2012 to collect honors from four publications.

Luensmann was named to the second team of the Perfect Game/Rawlings Freshman All-America Team on Tuesday after earning second-team status from Baseball America on Monday.

The Altoona, Pa., native also captured awards from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Collegiate Baseball. He was a second-team All-Big Ten selection and was a unanimous Big Ten All-Freshmen team pick.

Luensmann was Nebraska’s closer in 2016, finishing the year with 13 saves in 14 chances, a freshman record at Nebraska. He ended the year tied for third with Brett Jensen (2006) on NU’s single-season saves list and was three saves shy of Jensen’s single-season record of 16 saves set in 2005. Nine of Luensmann’s 13 saves came come during Big Ten play, which led the league.

In 38.0 innings over 28 appearances on the year, Luensmann posted a 1.18 ERA, which led NU’s bullpen. He allowed just three extra-base hits all season and held opposing batters to a .171 batting average.
