Leidner was terrible all season until he played us

Lunt and Stave are also bad QBs. It's our base defense. Run stop first with heavy reliance on the defensive line. Until Minnesota, they had largely played like crap. D-line steps up, pass defense improves.

This. If you put a gun to my head and say "Your defense can ONLY be good against one thing, pick run or pass!" then I'm picking run.

They've got to find a way to get pressure on the passer. I think they were trying to avoid giving Leidner outs to take off and scramble, but on obvious passing downs I don't care how gimmicky it is, do something to get a pass rush around the end. If you have to put a backup safety at DE and speed rush, get some damned PRESSURE.

Same here. I'd rather make a bad QB look slightly good than make a good running back look like the best player in the history of football.

No mention of Tommy?

No mention of the run d?

No mention of the 2 INT's to seal the game, 1 being a pick 6? (Ironic based on thread title)

No mention of 2 penalties?

Can we just take a moment to appreciate that every time we get a TFL it's like I just saw some old toy from my childhood that I totally forgot ever existed? I get this weird, nostalgic excitement at the notion that a DL can actually be IN THE BACKFIELD when contacting an RB.

I'm so confused as to why people don't believe we had a good pass rush against Minnesota... we were in the backfield all day, run or pass. Did he get sacked a lot? No but he got hit a ton, so did Stave. Our play in the backfield in the last two games was far better than last year against those two teams... without "elite talent Randy Gregory." Please stop basing opinions based on generalizations and actually watch the game. This team is growing each week and its fun to watch.

I think this is fair but the QB is still getting 4+ seconds with a clean pocket a lot - even with blitzing. Our secondary is not very good right now and it really hurts when a QB has that much time.

That being said, I think you are absolutely correct that we are seeing improvement in many areas and this includes the secondary.

the defense has slowly but steadily gotten better and it should continue to.. we will be playing pretty good ball when it comes time to play the spartans

Seems like Leidner was 16 of 17, or 17 of 19 earlier in the game, something like that. Did he have a hot hand or was it there for the taking. To be fair, seems like there were quite a few high-percentage swing passes.

Northwestern - running the ball 60+%, pass completion is 52%
Purdue - close to 50/50, pass completion is 54%
MSU - running about 58%, pass completion is 57%
Rutgers - running about 58%, pass completion is 69%.
Iowa - running the ball 60+%, pass completion is 61%.

It's gonna be interesting to see other teams play us as we finish out the season.

Why does Connor Cook get such a pass...that dude was 18-40 against granite he had 300 yards. To me winning 3rd down on defense will be crucial in beating the Spartans.

I'll believe that when we play an offense that isn't mediocre, or full of injured players popping in and out. Michigan State will tell us just how good this defense is. The Spartans scored 3 TD's on the best defense in the country. Don't even get me started on their defense.

well, let me start off by saying i have always been strong fan of the Huskers. living in "gold" country all my life, and having a father who was always a gopher fan (rip, dad) i probably pay a little more attention to the gophs than most other teams---not that much, tho ;). anyway, i didn't watch a reply, but, leidner made some great throws. put the ball right where it needed to be. he doesn't do that very often. many of them were high percentage throws (on purpose). i have seen a number of his games where he had a terrible time hitting the throws he made against the huskers---even with receivers/backs/te's wide open. i would be very surprised if he had another game like he did against the huskers. he did start to show the "old" leidner towards the end of the game. so, hats off to him---he had one of those games.

btw, listened to a "review" of the game from minny's point---the big talk is all about minny's injuries. well, everyone goes through those periods---and can state the same thing. also are a little "miffed" that spielman chose to be a husker, but, the one guy that covers the gophers stated that he understands when you look at the husker tradition, fan base, facilities, and, the gopher reporter thinks mike riley is going to be a very good coach for the huskers. showed husker football a lot of respect in his remarks. GBR!

The QB's are getting the passes off quickly against us because we give them too much cushion. I wish we would play some bump and run. One thing I haven't seen mentioned is our D-linemen fail to get their hands up.

MSU and always suck against us...and that was with Bono running the show. We will be fine.

I really don't get this sentiment. 2-2 since you joined the BIG. Unless you're talking about the 2 pounding you gave us in 1914/1920 or in the mid 90s when you had a dynasty and was the #1 team in the country. Most of these players weren't born then so I don't think that'll matter much.

There is no question that you have had the better teams but you don't play us well. Your qbs rarely have good games against us. Our two losses happened when 1. we committed something like five turnovers against you...most of those were simply dropped balls without contact...and 2. we were a dropped pass in the end zone away from beating you last year.

Again...no one is arguing that overall you have been better. It just doesn't seem that way against us.

Yes, Nebraska has played us tough and the games have been very competitive. I agree on that. The always suck statement is what doesn't fit this context.

These last few years we have been very poor. Any top team that plays even with us... it's probably sucking for them.

Leidner stats last two years against Nebraska. ...

2014: 246 total yds 2td 0int 75.8qbr
2015: 300 total yds 2td 2int 73.8qbr
Don't forget about his 111 yards RUSHING or the W he walked out of Memorial stadium with last year.

Here's Nebraska record/ranking for each year at the time of the MSU game:
2011 6-1/#13
2012 6-2/#21
2013 7-2/unranked
2014 5-0/#19
sorry don't consider it to be an indictment to have tough games vs. those teams.

The rushing yards are included and didn't feel the need to point out the scores, but I can..

2014: Minnesota punks Nebraska again
2015: Nebraska with 23 point beatdown.

Yeah, the problem has been WHERE we get the pressure from. We're getting it from the ends, and this allows the QB to still step up and throw, or evade the pressure. Until our tackles start shoving the center back towards the QB, we're going to give up passing yards even when we get pressure. It's gonna be really interesting to see what we do against Northwestern, because their line isn't good.
