..much too suited for hoops physique wise, so I claim dumbness...but I have question...

Is this targeting call too hard for players to figure out? My goodness, I think I see one or two a game....

Don't worry… Everyone on this site has played football for real… And Benches 450… And squats 600… And has a vertical jump at 42 inches…

It is really tough when the target is moving. Although some of it is terrible tackling technique with the lowering of the head. Me personally, I don't think the shoulder pad/chest plate to the head of receiver should be targeting but it is often called that way. Guys need to just start aiming for the waist. It doesn't lead to the big hits, but is better tackling.

Well, first of all, the rule really is pretty complicated: http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2016/9/7/12829482/targeting-penalty-rulebook-ncaa-football

Not many players are going to learn that well enough to apply it in game situations, other than by being careful to not "blow someone up." So given that physical contact is expected on every play, there are going to be errors. Sometimes it looks like targeting but only because the runner or receiver has moved at the last instant. Sometimes it isn't clear that the guy is "defenseless", like the instant after a punt returner catches the ball, when is he ready to defend himself? But sometimes I think it is still just a matter of old habits die hard. These are players who were likely taught for years growing up to hit as hard as possible, not just tackle. But then the rule changed. Of course, as you say, probably some of them are just stupid.

Sometimes it will be unavoidable, but it is reasonable to learn to target lower on the ballcarrier or receiver.

We played games like kill the man and smear the ...
and we hit each other as hard as we could.
Then we got old enough to play football with pads and we hit each other harder.
And everybody liked it.
We liked it a lot.
Then they said you can't do what you were taught to do because somebody may get hurt.
We didn't understand.
So we kept playing football the way you are supposed to.

Sorry.
If you have the ball somebody is going to hit you.
If you don't have the ball you hit who has the ball.
It's like that.
And that's the way it is.

I suppose it would be a transition if you didn't grow up playing that way, I wrestled and if they came up with a rule you couldn't use a headlock, I suppose it would take time to train yourself. the one year I did play football they had me on the o-line going against guys 50 pounds heavier than me, so I didn't see much glory, like tackling folks

Never forget we had a thread a few years ago on RSS asking what your best 40 time is or was? I kid you not, at least 30-40 guys ran a 4.5 or better. RollingLaugh

The sad thing about these people is ask them now about their kid, and you will get "they are awesome at whatever sport" or "the coach is an idiot and won't play my kid". It is sad really.

Personally my 40 time wasn't that great, but I had a 39 inch vertical...........jk.

I remember that thread on the 40's, it was classic...so are all the benching numbers! It boggles my mind...I remember one poster telling us how back when he played his C-2 High School Football Team had something like 8 guys benching over 400.

Played these as well. Difference is these kids today are putting on pads and helmets so early that they miss the natural instincts and tackling skills you build by playing without.. Never remember trying to tackle someone with my head

My 4.5 time MIGHT be a stretch...:)
Well there are quite a few guys actually playing today that actually do run a 4.5 and that is part of the issue with targeting. People that haven't played against d-1 caliber athletes and heck even upper level high school players don't understand how quickly things happen. In slow mo on TV it looks easy. When you're flying at a guy as fast as you can go, it's much tougher. The USC linebacker that got kicked out of the Rose Bowl though IMO was purposely trying to put a big hit on PSU's QB. Did he intend to hit him in the head? Sure looked that way and I don't think speed of the game or the QB ducking his head (he didn't) can excuse that hit. At the very least he was going high for his chest/shoulder area. In any case, you've got a hundreth of a second in many cases to decide how to attack a ball carrier and it's a fluid action. Darned tough sometimes but there are also guys like USC's linebacker IMO that are head hunters. He certainly didn't protest when he got the boot. He knew it.

You forgot sub 5s 40 times.
4.71 handheld.
But that was at a camp where I ran it twice. 4.77 the other time. Junior year of high school, and the only time I ever was clocked. But for some reason the colleges didn't want a skinny White kid with a below average arm at qb. Hahaha

Back then I was lucky to push the bar and 2 plates on a good day. I sucked at bench something awful. I was however really good at picking good songs on the radio in the weight room!

4.9 electronic. But nobody wanted a 6'1 185 lbs offensive guard.....
