Listened to the Dan Lebatard Show with Stugotz (I hate Lebatard) a little bit ago and they brought a former NFL QB (Chris Sims) on the show to talk about crazy football players.

He brought up Kyle Vanden Bosch. I think he said he played with him at Tennesee and also played against him while at Tampa Bay.

He said KVB always wore red contacts, whether in the locker room, in practice, or in a game. He said he was on the same team and still scared of him.

Everyone stayed away from him as they were all scared a little of his craziness. There were times they had the music playing and KVB would go turn the stereo down. No one argued or said a word since no one wanted to mess with "that crazy guy in the locker room."

One story (when on different teams) was about KVB hitting him hard and while they were on the ground afterwards:

KVB told him (in a deep creepy scary voice), "I got you goooood"
Sims "You hit me in the head though..."
KVB (creepy scary voice) "No waaaay."
Sims "Yeah, I think it's going to be a penalty.
KVB (creepy scary voice) "Nooooo"

Another story he had on KVB was when they had a 7-man protection and KVB came looping around the end. The fullback came across and blasted him a little bit.

KVB wasn't looking, so he thought it was a cheap shot, so instead of getting up and chasing the play down, he chased the fullback down and ended up running a route out to the right. KVB was like, (creepy scary voice) "I'll kill yoooouuuu!"

Got any 'crazy' Husker football player stories that you've heard?

He had another story about Ray Lewis when he played them during week one in 2006.

Lewis would be singing and dancing around during TV timouts and as the offense lined up, Sims remembered thinking "Damn, he's not scared at all. This guy is just crazy." When they got lined up and he started yelling blue 84, blue... Lewis ran up to a spot and pointed while yelling, "They are running it right here!" Sims thought to himself "Damn, poor Michael Pittman! I hope he's okay!"

They were too deep into the snap count to audible and Pitmn ran the ball right where Lewis pointed and got stuffed.

Off the topic a little, but Vanden Bosch was part of a pretty nice run of defensive end that came out of Nebraska dating back to 1987.
Think about some of these names:
Neil Smith, Broderick Thomas, Kenny Walker, Mike Croel, Trev Alberts, Travis Hill, Donta Jones, Dwayne Harris, Jared Tomich, Grant Wistrom, Mike Rucker, Kyle Vanden Bosch, Chris Kelsay
All in about a 10 year time frame.

Neil Smith was a defensive end??

I think the Simms story you related was actually Aaron Rodgers talking about KVB. It is almost literally word for word. Still funny. The kicker was him relating KVB saying to the ref "No, it was Suh!"

Not really too crazy, but an old friend of mine who played in the O line for the Huskers back in the late 70s was drafted in the 2nd round. Absolute stud freak athlete. About 6-3, 290 and he did a 360 dunk on our intramural basketball team. He got cut on the last roster cuts. He had gotten a sizeable signing bonus and said he didn't care if he stuck. He said, the defensive linemen were crazy in the NFL and they didn't just want to hurt you, they wanted to kill you. They offered him another nice signing bonus to come back the next year, he cashed the check and got cut again.

" ...three-time Nebraska lifter-of-the-year (1998–2000) after adding 40 pounds to his frame upon arriving on the Lincoln campus as freshman. He graduated with 3.82 grade-point average and bachelor's degree in finance in December 2000. Vanden Bosch was also a member of the Society of Innocents and awarded the NFFNational Scholar-Athlete Award, for academic excellence."

Kyle also won the Draddy award in 2000.

The William V. Campbell Trophy, formerly the Vincent dePaul Draddy Trophy, is a trophy awarded by the National Football Foundation that is given to the Americancollege footballplayer with the best combination of academics, community service, and on-field performance. It is considered by many to be the "Academic Heisman."
