… about Bird calling Magic when he found out he had AIDS… great story… and it made me think…
Have there been two athletes more linked in competition in their careers?
I thought of Federer and Nadal…

Others?

Maybe Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain

If you want some great entertainment - carve out a couple of hours, Google Larry Bird stories and watch other players and coaches tell bird tales

Scored 47 in a game when he decided he would play most of the game left handed just for the hell of it

kind of the same thing with Russell/Wilt

Russell absolutely dominated that 'rivalry'
In a total of 142 matchups, Russell averaged 14.5 points and 23.7 rebounds, Wilt 28.7 and 28.7 respectively. Russell held the head to head in games 84-58.

Team wise, Russell played mostly on the better of the two, including a few improbable series wins in '68, and '69, but for as good as Russell was(11 titles won in 13 years of playing), Wilt held his own "in the paint" against him. Would be fantastic to see two players like that emerge again some day.
