John Cook signs extension

In what world is it okay that Amy Williams makes more than John Cook? She got an extension that raised her salary to $950,000.

Overpaid

A slightly above average basketball coach vs one of the greatest all-time volleyball coaches. Make it, make sense.
My guess is that the market for women's basketball coaches is better than the market for volleyball coaches. In other words, NU is paying Cook "only" $825,000 because they don't need to pay him any more than that.

That world is called the "real world marketplace". There are a ton of mediocre college football coaches that also get paid multiple times more in salary. The marketplace for coaches determines the going salary rates. Fair to compare? No, but it's NEVER been that way, it's always what the market is willing to pay.

A mediocre football coach is worth more than the best volleyball coach.

I disagree with you here, this moves her from the 33rd highest paid coach to tied for the 20th highest paid. I think she was right where she belonged as the 33rd highest paid.

My point has zero to do with her specific salary. It has everything to do with the marketplace placing different values on different jobs in general. The marketplace says in general basketball coaches get paid more than volleyball coaches. That's just a fact, right or wrong.

This thread is about keeping the best coach in the athletic department…congrats John Cook!!

Yep, Cook is a steal at this price. How many millions of dollars does Nebraska Volleyball bring to the school? I am sure it is one of the few volleyball teams in the country that runs in the black.
They basically break even while turning a small profit which is great for an athletic department.

Exactly, so why are you arguing with me? You came with a broad generalization of the overall salaries of women’s basketball coaches comparative to volleyball coaches. My stated opinion had much more restrictive parameters. Our elite volleyball coach, one of the best to ever do it, compared to our average women’s basketball coach. Yes the marketplace dictates salaries, but it does have parameters, otherwise every coach would make what Kim Mulkey gets paid. You have the elite tier, Mulkey, Auriemma, and Staley. Then the tiers go in steps down from there. Do you honestly believe Williams is a top 20 coach? Because that is where her current salary puts her.

Yes the top women’s basketball coaches make more than the top volleyball coaches. But that isn’t what we are talking about here, Cook is a top volleyball coach, do you think Amy Williams is a top basketball coach? Before her raise she was the 33rd highest paid coach, after the raise she is tied for 20th. Let’s try an exercise.

Coach #1
Overall 96-56 (.632)
Conf. 50-39 (.562)
4 straight NCAA app.
1 Sweet Sixteen

Coach #2
Overall 137-111 (.552)
Conf. 69-72 (.489)
3 NCAA app.
Adv. to Second Rd. once

Coach #3
Overall 287-140 (.672)
Conf. 149-81 (.648)
8 NCAA app., never knocked out before the 2nd round, 5 Sweet Sixteen, and 1 Elite Eight

Coach #4
Overall 261-133 (.662)
Conf. 118-84 (.584)
7 NCAA app., 4 Second Rd., 1 Sweet Sixteen, and 1 Elite Eight

Coach #5
Overall 611-313 (.661)
Conf. 290-203 (.588)
22 NCAA app., 8 Second Rd., 4 Sweet Sixteen, and 2 Elite Eight

Using the Marketplace theory, match these salaries to the coaches above.

$715,000
$774,722
$850,000
$893,500
$950,000

These are the coaches and their salaries, one of these is not like the others. Sure you might say that the N. Carolina coach has only made 4 NCCA’s, but she has only been at N. Carolina for 5 years and her first year was the Covid year, nobody played in the tournament that year. Amy has been at Nebraska for 8 years and only made “The Dance” 3 times. I just believe she is overcompensated and John Cook should be paid more than her. Plus, you add in the fact our Volleyball team pays for itself and Amy’s program is like a leech, sucking from the lifeblood of the football team and the men’s basketball team.

Coach #1.

Conf. 69-72 (.489)
3 NCAA app.

Amy Williams, $715,000 (this was her salary before the raise, more than adequate for what she has produced, she now makes $950,000)

Coach #3

Conf. 149-81 (.648)
8 NCAA app., never knocked out before the 2nd round, 5 Sweet Sixteen, and 1 Elite Eight
Cori Close, UCLA $774,722

Coach #4
Overall 261-133 (.662)
Conf. 118-84 (.584)

Kim Barnes Arico, Michigan $893,500

Coach #5

You brought up Amy Williams with John Cook and asked for an explanation, and I gave you one.

Cook is a top volleyball coach, do you think Amy Williams is a top basketball coach? Before her raise she was the 33rd highest paid coach, after the raise she is tied for 20th.
I think Amy Williams is somewhere between the 6th-8th highest paid women's coach in the Big 10. And that's about where they've finished in the Big 10 standings. They've had bad luck with injuries. Getting Britt Prince is a big deal. I would say that Amy Williams is an upper tier Big 10 women's coach.

I would not say that she is a top basketball coach, but then that is not where her salary is anyway.

Not arguing with you or anybody else. I'm just pointing out the obvious (and for nobody in particular) that salaries are market based and determined by what others are willing to pay. I always see some people comparing the salary of one profession to that of another profession (like volleyball to basketball coaching) and claiming it's not right for some reason. BUT it's really an "apples and oranges" comparison whether anybody thinks it's fair or unfair. Fairness, worth, etc. aren't always part of the formula, it's just what the market demand says it is.

Jesus, did you really go look up all that info on coaches for WBB?

I was surprised to see his salary. Even as the highest paid coach in the country, Cook is underpaid and deserves more. Come on NU, make it a cool 1m and make a statement!
