Unless he decides to retire, Beilein will be at the top of some ADs’ wish lists. If you’re a college coach on the hot seat, it just got warmer.

He's 67. Younger than Coach K., Roy Williams or Jim Boeheim, just two years older than Tom Izzo. He might retire, but if Beilein wants to keep coaching, he'll get plenty of interest.

Hopefully he doesn't come back to the Big Ten....Indiana and Minnesota might be looking for new coaches.

I don't think Archie Miller's seat was hot as of yesterday. But if the Hoosier faithful think they have a shot at Beilein, that will change quickly.

Never understood why he took that job in the first place. He had a great thing going at Michigan. His offense there was a joy to watch. I hope he doesn’t come back to the BIG either. I wonder if DePaul could afford him and goes after him?

Bad year for the Beilein family. Patrick even worse than his dad. Both caused their own problems though.

Indiana and Texas will be at the top of the list.

I think John takes ONE more job. I think he takes his "I want to set up my kids and their kids and their kids and their kids" type of job (dear financial planners, please don't get all lame about this)...I think he looks for a 5 year 25+ million dollar deal.

Texas seems like a perfect fit. Crazy that Shaka was such a dud.

It really is, he was pretty much the hottest coach for about 5 years...with Brad Stevens being the other stud. I still think Brad leaves the NBA and comes back to college.

Shaka is rich beyond his dreams and his wife is a big time lawyer (maybe law professor now too) so the next job he takes, is going to be 100% her say...and it will be in a big city where she can do her thing.

I wonder if that is a gesture by the Cavs?
Sounds like some of the players didn’t give him a chance.

I agree. A very odd move for your reasons given plus his age and style of play. He clearly must have been ready for a change and he figured that he would still have some great college options if the NBA didn't work out (which was a 90% likelihood).

fit is so important -- hire the right coach and the team could be losing at historic levels - much worse than the prior coach and the faithful

will point to the distant future 2023
start dissecting drafts from years ago as an excuse
proclaim that the team is being "built the right way"
state the Red Auerbach and Pat Riley would have the same record
cite location as a reason it might take longer to build
come up with umpteen unforeseen circumstances that have conspired to prevent one from winning

a GM can really take the heat off by hiring a coach where winning becomes secondary and struggles are directed at the players, the prior coach, etc rather than the hire

the Cavs messed up this hire - should have considered Craig Ehlo or Mark Price.

I remember reading was really annoyed with all the illegal recruiting. I dont think he thought it through though. All those pre madonnas were too much for him.

No coach would’ve won with that roster but he seemed to be a really bad fit. Probably realized he was at the end of his career and wanted to give it a shot in the big leagues before he retired. Didn’t work out but doesn’t really matter, he got paid millions to work for less than a year and now he can decide if he’s done or have his choice of open college jobs.

Well that was one dream that didn't turn out as hoped. He wanted to try the NBA and learned in a very short time it wasn't for him. But at least he's an old fart so he can retire if he wants knowing now that he didn't miss anything with a career in the NBA.

And if he's not ready to sit down in the rocker, he can always go back to college for however long he wants to remain active.
