This was always going to be nothing more than a transition year. Riley and his staff got what they could out of these players, especially given all the injuries. Congrats to the team on a solid 9-4 season.

I still have LOTS of doubts and questions about some people on this staff.

But on to next year! We will hopefully have a better QB and offensive/defensive lines. I am not happy with many things with this program right now, but Riley deserves time to show what he can do.

Let's hope for an even better 2017

Hopefully our redshirt freshmen on both sides of the line grow up quickly next year. They have the talent to have VERY good careers but they'll still be freshmen. I EXPECT us to be better at D end and OT next year.

Agree with everything, well said. I hope Riley and his crew bust their ass like they have never before on the recruiting trail and the players bust their ass in the weight room and classroom (thanks Gerry)!

Said this in the game thread - but if your athletic department budget is $100 million, then you had better be starting walkons only by choice and not out of necessity.

On offense tonight we played most of the game with 5 sophomores and 4 former walkons. Scholarship seniors were Newby, Moore and Carter and Newby got hurt, and Moore played some of the game. On Defense we played with four Seniors with one being a former walkon. I think this team had opportunities to win today but lack of depth was very obvious this week and the last part of the year with all of the injuries. It really shows how poorly Pelini recruited his last view years with the depth this team has.

Riley knew how many walk-ons we had on the 2 deep when he got here. Yet, he didn't recruit any jucos and redshirted most of the freshman. Pelini's gone, Riley's responsible for depth issues now.

If we can't win at least 9 next year, then Riley might want to consider retirement....because the 2018 schedule is daunting to say the least.

No he is not. It takes 5 years to fix that mess.

Taking shortcuts to building your program comes back to bite you in the rear end. Riley did not create the issues with depth on this team. To say that we are on par with a non power 5 team isn't stretching the truth too terribly.

Whew, great...Riley is going to be pushing 70 by the time he can bring home at the very least a division title.

Not that it really matters, but it wasn't what I was saying. The roster has to be completely rebuilt and we are already underway in rebuilding it. To say that Riley owns this lack of depth at positions is simply just another Bo-bot crying.

Absolutely. Games are won in the trenches. And we need an upgrade in both trenches. I am more optimistic about our young offensive line talent than I am the defense. Especially worried about DE
I agree completely that games are won in the trenches. Major successes like Alabama, Ohio State (not to mention the successful years of Nebraska football) have all had this as a foundation. Then why have we been unable to have any consistent success in this area for nearly two decades? Are linemen extremely hard to find, develop, etc?

Who do you see contributing at DE next year?
I'm hoping Collin Miller is the pass rush threat at DE that we've been lacking. He has gotten a lot of praise from some former blackshirts that have watched practice. Quayshon is another guy that has been mentioned as a situational hybrid rush end possibility but Miller has looked really good on the scout team. The other guy that I'm hoping the light bulb goes on for is Daishon Neal but man he's almost DT size now.

It does not take 5 years to rebuild a program, especially one that was already winning more games than not. Name another major program that has taken that long to turn around. Even Kirk Ferentz won a conference championship and made a BCS Bowl in Year 4. The Penn State coach had to deal with depth issues from sanctions and won a championship in Year 3. Chris Petersen has Washington in the playoffs in Year 3. Enough with this 5 years nonsense.

Pelini did a better job of recruiting DTs once Carl left but man he almost completely whiffed on DEs and O linemen. We have 3-4 guys redshirting that should be able to help on the O line next year and at least one DE redshirting that may show up situationally at the very least.

You would think that Daishon Neal would be coming into his own by next year, some poster on here said he rather play video games with his frat buddies instead of becoming a difference maker...

Hes just pre emptively making excuses. Shows that he truly does not believe in riley.

Couldn't agree with you more!!! Nearly two decades of irrelevance has really lowered many people's expectations.

No poster has ever been able to prove that Riley is pushing this program in the right direction. Only post excuses of why he hasn't been able to turn the corner yet. All talk, no action. I've stated a million times, if our guys where doing things right but just getting beat, it'd be one thing. The O-line is confused and not using good technique. That's not due to being untalented, that's due to bad coaching. Lack of talent just gets beat. Bad coaching looks like what we have. Likewise, a pass rush from the ends will not make up for deep zone defense that leaves the under open all day long.

We saw this all day. It wasn't our guys fault. When everyone is 20 yards deep on 3rd & 8 and we're in a zone D, all a QB has to do is dunk it off to the under and he'll run for the first down in open space. And when teams have a ton of speed then it's hard to make tackles in open spaces. I don't care who you are. So many supporters for the new regime are so dam quick to throw our players under the bus but refuse to point out bad coaching. It's like your afraid to admit it because you believe that = no hope. Guys, a ton of this is not on our players. It's not all on our Huskers 4 life players. A ton of it is not their fault. It's on a few coaches. Not all of them just a few. Banker and Cav at the top of that list. Banker isn't tuff enough to play balls out, man on man. He coaches like he's scared.

I think Carl's a better coach than most want to admit. We had a good D-line even after Suh graduated, then when Carl left, our defensive line was terrible.

Carl's best work was as a coach. Other parts of his life need work.

I agree, riley gets at least 5 years, If we are not playing competitive by then. we go back to the run.

Whatever happened with Banker wanting a fast defense where you slide players forwards (safety to LB, LB to DE, DE to DT) ?

Maybe its time to move a LB or two to DE on 3rd down so we have what some teams call a speed rush.

I don't disagree with the assessment of winning in the trenches. However, I don't think it is a matter of one or the other of anything. For instance, we need better talent all around AND better coaching. We need better guys on both lines AND more speed behind them. The speed and quickness of Tennessee was on display today. It seemed all year even against teams like Iowa that we were slow, very slow. They were by our guys so fast they couldnt catch their license plate numbers. I am afraid everyone has this simple idea of how to "fix" things and there is nothing simple about it. It is going to take lots of time and some starts and stops along the way.

One thing that has passed through my mind that will get some people stirred up on here. With all of the Bo bashing about his poor coaching and the poor recruiting - one could surmise that while Bo wasn't a great recruiter, he must have coached well to have won 9 games each year with the talent being less than adequate. A thought to ponder and I am sure one that will get some hate mail!

Interesting theory. So, we miss give or take 25 tackles and it's the coaches fault. Sorry but some of our seniors on the field were a step slow, to be kind. Our starting RB didn't break a tackle.
We looked like we were a step slow on every play. The first TD, I have no idea where our LB's were plugging but they were behind the RB by 2 steps. Bankers fault, same with Young missing their QB on the 3rd and 10.
Delusional is all I have .......

Ok. I have read the same about Miller. Neal? Who knows? But at the least he might provide some depth at tackle if he is getting that big

Ha. No hate mail. I agree with everything here. Bo can coach, no doubt about it. He can't recruit and he has deep character issues. That led to his demise.
