Is Whipple trying to get fired?

I mean...last year...the only good year Pitt has had in 20+ years...he had a first round NFL pick at QB.

It’s the only explanation I can think of for handling the QB situation the way he has. Seems like he wants to head to Scottsdale early this year.
Honestly I think he has been at odds with MJ since the day he took over. The point it became apparent to me was when Mickey said he wanted to be the toughest team on the field, and Whipple came back with toughness doesn’t equal points on the scoreboard. There is 0% chance Whipple will be back next year.

The sad part is we really dont have any other play callers on offense left if we fired him now. Love the guy’s pressers but his game decisions these past 2 weeks have me questioning his motives and mental state.

That’s who is he. If everyone was healthy and the OL held up, his offense would let CT and Palmer put up a bunch of stats. But he hasn’t shown the ability to adjust at all, probably why he has only had flashes in his career and no sustained success.
I agree. And one thing that never gets mentioned in these discussions is the fact that any really good assistant coach or coordinator was going to stay as far away from the Nebraska job as possible, knowing that Frost was most likely going to get fired in the following year if he had another bad season. What we then had to choose from were coaches who were not that good, not any improvement over what we had, or they would be coaches at the end of their careers who wanted "one last adventure". This is why it was beyond stupid and a dereliction of his responsibilities for Alberts to retain Frost. Frost should have been shit-canned last year. Period. And this shit season is partly on Trev.

I heard before the season that Trev had wanted to can Frost last November but was talked out of it. He had the political capital it took finally this fall to pull the plug and he didn’t let an additional 15 million stop him. IF he had waited there was a chance Frost could have won enough to get his contract renewed and Trev wasn’t going to let that happen.

Full of Bravado......and thats exactly what we dont need. We need some humility as a fan base AND in our leadership. If we dont have it after the last 5 years we are total fools and deserve every bit of humiliatiom we get. If there is one thing I hate its a braggar. I hate it especially if its never backed up.

Too bad he got talked out of it.

That Charmin squeezer is terrible for NU. Maybe he’d do better at a place like USC or Florida….but not in Lincoln…he’s pass first and he ain’t changing.

It’s mostly on trev. We all knew it wouldn’t work. Why did Trev allow for it to get even worse when he had enough data already?

The pass first probably would have worked enough for a W the last 2 weeks if the guy dropping back had been Smothers instead of Purdy. His run threat slowed the rush significantly and he bought time to either throw or run.

Because the AD HAS to have the political capital to make a change. Trev had only been on the job a couple of months and too many people still thought Frost could get it done with a cupcake schedule this season. Trev bided his time to build a consensus with the power brokers…..Tom included IMO.

Can we just call it what it is. We faced one of the better defenses in the country today. Check out all their Def stats. It’s not all on Whipple.

I used to have “BLACK SHIRT” D’s though.
You coming back Bo?

Yeah it is crazy how people rationalized a 3-9 season because the losses were close but that really was a narrative that this year we'd get over the hump. Silliness.

Just fire Whipple and promote Steve Cooper. Our offense was better with him at OC and Smothers at QB against Iowa last year than anything Whipple is going to throw out there the rest of the way.
Wut

There is no point firing him at this point. Keep the kids with as little distraction as possible. The new HC can make staff decisions on keeping MJ, firing Whipple, etc.

I don’t believe Cooper was calling plays.

Ok, he's not the John Wooden of football but here is what he was handed.
1. Coach about to be fired.
2. Worst offensive line in recent memory.
3. A good but damaged qb.
4. A second string qb who just doesn't bring anything to the table.
5. A third string qb who could have run for a first down to extend the game but threw the ball away to the horror of this fan.

Except for a handful of transfers he was given absolute zero to work with.

Edit: ok, the Ramir Johnson delayed draw play is a fireable offense.

I guarantee you that there are a lot of coaches who could win a lot of games with Smothers at QB. No he’s not Joe Burrow but if used properly he can move the ball.
Can do a few things but nothing overwhelming. A poor decision maker.
Are we so bad off that a qb that led us to a singular field goal is a mini messiah?

Yes! He is in very poor health, and has to have someone lead him to the sidelines before the game so he knows where to stand.

One thing I like about Mickey is that he made a plan as interim head coach. It was a good plan. He had a veteran OC and QB coach in Whipple. So he turned the offense and QB decision making over to Whip while Mickey busted his ass coaching, recruiting, and being a CEO type while (I think) also coaching receivers.

The problem is that (1) the starting QB got hurt-- we play at least Illinois close and beat Minnesota if Thompson doesn't go down-- and (2) Whipple is one of those put coaches who wants to pick a guy and prepare them. And he decided long ago that Purdy was his second best. So stick with the plan. That's what good leaders do. But the problem is Purdy has the yips. His cameo appearances earlier in the season were an utter disaster and he has gotten worse.

In hindsight, Purdy should not have even started vs. Minnesota. And obviously should have been pulled sooner. Mickey should have intervened and Whip should have pulled Purdy much sooner. But philosophically, the types of decisions made by both Mickey and Whip actually work out more often than not.

CT still is a loser. He's what, 50% which is what he was at Texas.

Whipple is a pass happy inflexible old man.
Healthy Thompson we win that game going away as well as the defense played..

agree with you on Whipple way to pass happy when we don’t have quality backup’s passing the ball..
