Dabo Sweeney hired the same year Bo was at Nebraska. They met the first year and Bo won the first bowl game. Just listened to Dabo ring off Clemsen's accomplishments and why they are an elite program. Not sure if Dabo was a hot name when he was hired - but wow - what a difference between these two men and their careers.

Dabo was never more than a position coach before getting the head job at Clemson

They have it going on now. Of course so does Bo he's playing for a natty too

I know Bo was an asshole, and I wanted him gone years before he was actually fired and think he's an embarrassment to the human race sometimes....BUT, is it possible he's a decent coach who just sucked at recruiting? IDK the answer, but in looking at his season this year, and thinking back to him being one second away from a Big 12 title...it just made me wonder. If he had the horses, is he a decent coach? Just to clarify, I'm only wondering about his coaching abilities, not his ability to be a decent person.

Good coach to a point but being a college coach involves a helluva a bunch more than Xs and Os. You have to not only know them but you have to be able to recruit like a fiend and be able to mold your system to your players. Bo was poor at best at either. Then the off the field for a college coach is almost as important as the on field stuff and Bo was terrible at best. Bad fit for NU. Reasonably good fit for his hometown small University. He's where he needs to be.

Bottom line. Dabo is a fair game day coach but he's recruited extremely well.

Every time you think about his coaching abilities remember the blowout losses and how we could never seem to stop Wisconsin running or any team with a mobile QB. Plus a good coach makes in game adjustments and I'm still waiting for his first one.

Did you ever see the goon make any adjustments at all? There's your answer.

I took recruiting off the table, I know he wasn't great at it. HOWEVER, unless MR closes with a huge bang, let the comparisons begin on that issue. MR may enjoy it more, but so far he isn't any better at closing the deal than Bo was.

I'm talking about his coaching abilities. I don't know enough about the X's and O's of football to talk "halftime adjustments" and such. But, and you have no idea how much I hate typing this, I'm using the word HATE here, Bo had just enough success, and enough success this season at YSU, it makes me wonder if he's a better coach than he was given credit for but he was such an asshole we don't look at him objectively on that issue. If he had the horses, and yes that's a big if because you have to recruit them, but if he had the horses, my opinion of him has changed for the better on that issue. It seems like we give MR a pass this year and last because of the lack of talent he had to work with, but don't give the same pass to Bo, and obviously that's because he was the one responsible for said lack of talent. I get that. But think back to when Bo had some talent, especially defensively, he did OK.

Now I have to go take a shower, defending that guy makes me feel dirty.

One more thought...All those RS freshman o-line guys everyone is so excited about, did Bo recruit those guys, or MR? Honest question, IDK the answer. But if Bo recruited them, then all MR has to his credit is a great relationship with a great college receiver who had a gifted son who ended up being the lynchpin for the Calabass crew. Unless MR has some more friends like that, we could be in some trouble going forward.

I was a HUGE MR supporter, good luck finding somebody as excited about the hire as I was, but the clock is now ticking for me, on him. So far, his results are below average. I'm hoping and rooting for things to get better on the recruiting front and win-loss front, much better.

I don't know the answer either except for Farniok. Riley's crew closed the deal on him. Raridon was a legacy recruit. But others on here would know more about Wilson.
I share your concerns about Riley to an extent. Time will tell. For now, since I hate the coaching carousel and the "open the wallet and get a Saban type coach" nonsense, I am content to give Riley time and the benefit of the doubt

Comparing Riley's recruiting and Pelini's is ludicrous. Pelini wouldn't even be in the conversation with any of these guys. Riley is battling with the big boys for some flat out studs. Nebraska could have already filled up their class with much better players than what Bo brought in. I agree he does need to land one or two of these guys this year. Once you get one or two on board the train will start rolling.

Bingo! Pelini is like the successful D1 college coach who goes to the pros and can't make it work. He simply is not a D1 head coach. He does well in the minor leagues. Nothing wrong with that – that is just his place.

Raridon we would have a shot with with Garrison. The rest of the guys would not be here if not for MR and his staff. Technically they are all MR's recruits though. Garrison was not a bad recruiter but his head coach limited greatly who would consider playing at NU. There's a reason that nobody other than Joe Ganz chose to follow Bo to YSU.

Coaching requires human interaction and compassion.

Sorry, Bo deserves nothing for his narcissistic demeanor and entitlement.

That dude is a disgrace as a rep for Nebraska.

Horrible recruiter and couldn't run a top flight program.

If they don't sign, remind me again what we get for second or third place? Right now, this very second, their results are very similar. Difference is, I think MR can continue to improve, we knew what we had with Bo and it wasn't getting better. So we'll see.

Team jack's family might disagree about the compassion part.

Right now, this very second, Bo is every bit as good of a recruiter as MR is. As in, really average. I'm talking results, not highly ranked visitors. But I also think MR can and will continue to improve, but it's conjecture at this point and will continue to be, until he actually does better than Bo did.

Ummm Bo gets credit for going along with the Team Jack thing but it wasn't his doing.

I like MR as a person, and as a head coach. What concerns me is his age, he's 63 right now. Think back to your late teen age years and early twenties. How many sexagenarians did you relate to? That is a recruiting issue. Plus just on pure energy not too many major college coaches starting a new job in their 60's last too long. I hope for the best but wonder how long he will last even if he does a good job.

LOL

  • Denarian: Someone age 10 to 19.
  • Vicenarian: Someone in his or her twenties.
  • Tricenarian: Someone in his or her thirties.
  • Quadragenarian: Someone in his or her forties.
  • Septuagenarian: Someone in his or her seventies

Dabo went out and hired a great coordinators like Venables and Morris. Bo and Riley hired their cronies. That's the difference right there.
