Illinois fires Beckman

Saw it from Bruce Feldman btw. Says sources told Fox Sports. The best thing is less than a hour ago Beckman tweeted "ONE WEEK!!!" And boom he gone.

We knew this was going to happen so why wait until the week before the season starts?

He must have screwed the pooch to be fired a week before the season.

Illinois has fired Tim Beckman citing preliminary results of an external review into allegations involving the program.

Some of the bizarre comments he's made lately really made you wonder about his mental state. Oh wait though Harbaugh does that too. NM.
Scratch the Pelini idea if they don't want a headcase...

When coaches have millions, some times tens of millions of dollars at stake if they win now! They need to win and win now, if there are any gray areas they will push players to win now. The old days of genuine gentleman and scholar coaches are a rare breed, glad we have one.

The timing is unreal. I can only imagine the AD saw the preliminary evidence and decided he had no choice. The press release essentially reads "when everyone sees the evidence, we'll all get canned if we don't fire him now". Heard an interview on 1620 a while ago from a former Illini player accusing Beckman of some things, and remember thinking that player was a crybaby. I think I was wrong.

They just got rid of a MAC flavor-of-the-month, and Hazell isn't doing so hot at Purdue.

Fleck = Beckman, Hazell, Gill, et al.
True...but Fleck is from the state so it could happen.

I would like to see them get the HC from Navy

The lawyers must be chomping at the bit. Beckman will almost certainly sue to get the $3Million remaining on his contract that Illinois says they won't pay. That former student who spoke out now has leverage for his own lawsuit. Yep, lawyers will be having a field day.

Craig Bohl? Barnie Cotton? Turner Gill?

In all seriousness, Illinios was named thee top party school in the country recently. They had a ton of discipline infractions. Public rumors have been going for years on Beckman making kids play hurt. Somehow Beckman made Ron Zook look good...

I heard the interview with the kid and like others thought he sounded like a baby. I also listened to the same station the next day or so and they had basically said (paraphrasing) they thought the kid was exaggerating a little bit and couldn't find anyone to back him up. I personally think this is more of a CYA deal. Who knows, maybe there was something to it. Just seems really weird to wait till now.

As for whoever said Ilinois doesn't have anyone worth poaching, I'd take Dominic Thieman in a heartbeat and be extremely happy. BTW, if you want to see who he is, he's wearing #4 on ESPN right now in a blue jersey. Just scored a td. GO STA!!!!!

because they finally found a way not to pay him from the ill

Beckman will not receive the $3.1 million remaining on the last two years of his original five-year contract or the $743,000 called for if his contract had been bought out.

Any of those guys would be an upgrade over Beckman. IF they want to go coordinator route, I wouldn't be surprised to see Tim Beck get a look. Illinois should be able to pull talent. Their coaching has been terrible. It seems like they get a guy that's good on one side of the ball and the other side of the ball is terrible. Another interesting story line for football. Man I love the fall.

I think they should give Northern Illinois' coach a look. After the way Ohio State's defense finished last season, I'd say Luke Fickell might be worth a look.

I don't know how Illinois isn't or can't be a perennial power? When you consider their recruiting base, how is it that they can't compete at the highest level? Is it there academic standards? In all likelihood, they're going to get another Tim Beckman type coach, and they'll just rinse and repeat, IMO. They might as well just keep Cubit. At least he's won a few bowl games at Western Michigan.
