How much would that guy be worth - LSU thinks Aranda is worth 1.3million

Most of the talk and discussion always centers on what type of offense we are running or can we recruit 5 star QB's. I also see many fans that have given up and think NU is now Minnesota and we canot ever again be considered among the elite

I say the issue for NU in the last 15 years is defense. Defense is more coaching and desire. Talent is of course important but not as important on defense as offense.

Our defense with the right schemes and coaching can be fixed right now. If we start playing great defense then everything else is possible for us. Play the type of defense we have seen in the last 5-6 years and we are simply another mediocre team no matter how many points we score.

No doubt our weak defenses have hurt us over this span... I don't think it's a coincidence that our championship heard are also years when we have fielded great defenses. This quarters defense that banker wants to run, I have heard, does require some pretty good talent in the backfield. Isn't that why Michigan State's defense was more vulnerable this year? Their talent was young and not as good as recent years? I'm no expert at all in understanding schemes and such, so maybe not the best breakdown...

I do think coaching improved defensively over the course of the season, but did it improve enough to say Banker is the guy? Guess we'll find out. If our defense improves dramatically next year, so will our record. If not, we will have to outscore other teams, which is not what we want to do.

Pelini was once considered that guy - at least until Suh graduated.

I'd argue that it was talent like Suh and Glenn Dorsey that made some of Pelini's defenses look great, not his schemes. Talent is still the most important factor. But yes some coaches are better at maximizing talent than others.

Imagine what we could've done in '09 if we had an offense to compliment our defense.

agree talent is always so imprtant - But look at a guy like Aranda, what would this team have done this year with a defense like WI had - certainly they had some talented individuals, but the reason they were good was Aranda.

Same could be said of Narduzzi

Handful of guys like that. Most of those guys get shots as head men, even if proven that head man is not their bag (Muschamp).

Narduzzi, Pelini, Muschamp, Strong, Stoops, all guys who moved onwards and upwards.

Foster is the only guy still kind of "stuck" at DC (his choice most likely) and at the rate coaches are turned over, a guy like Aranda will get his shot to be a head man sooner rather than later.

Smart was probably an assistant far longer than most thought he would be.

Basically if you hire an Aranda or one of the above, you do so knowing he's not going to be around for 10 years if he's worth anything.

Doesn't dissuade me, but it doesn't really fit the Nebraska fan mode to go searching for new coordinators every couple years as guys shuffle onwards and upwards.

Most folks seem to be of the mindset that Frost needs to come home and bring a crew who is going to ride out some time.

I think the performance of the assistant is going to dictate whether or not he gets a shot at a head coaching spot. So does not matter if we are paying a guy $500,000 if he fields top flight defenses he will get a chance to be HC. Might as well give yourself the best shot at the best coach
