If Riles is indeed let go at the end of the season...

Mullen makes almost 5 million per year. Assuming he would even pick up the phone if we call we would have to offer close to 7 - and even then MSU may match us. We are likely going to make a lot of "whales" and baby "whales" a whole lot richer when they use the Nebraska job - in which they have no interest in pursuing - as leverage to get raises.

Valid points but trust me, Nebraska will have to dig deep for the next coach. If they want to go the "proven/homerun" route.

There are no proven/home run hires that aren't already at destination jobs. I wouldn't put Mullens in that category. We might have to pay a bit above market value at this point but the time for us to pay home run money is when the coordinator or nonpower 5 head coach comes here, wins and becomes a home run hire candidate for LSU- notre dame or Florida.

Our coordinators, however should be earning top dollar - close to a million. We are already paying near that for Diaco

Chip Kelly says hi. But I agree with the rest you are saying.

I don't think Chip is on the table for whatever the price. He hates recruiting and will wait for a bigger job to open where recruiting isn't as big of a burden. Maybe I'm wrong but I just do not see chip at Nebraska.

Might not be a bad call. If something does happen at the end of the season and MR is gone, I do think you have options at the QB position where you could run a "pro style" offense with TL or POB or some type of speed spread with Gebbia. That should at least open up a bigger pool of candidates for a HC position.

I'd be OK with a more even-handed spending approach. Pay enough to bring/retain the very best coordinators and recruiters by spending less on the head coach.

Do what tOSU did with Urbie. Fire the coach but retain until end of season. Hire new AD and HC - NCAA rules allow new HC to put limited staff in place - primary for transition of recruiting to the incoming staff. A change is MUCH more likely than retaining Riley - that worked so well for tOSU we need to stop mucking around and handle this like we actually want to improve.

Actually my ideal plan only works if the coach is un-employed now - like Chip Kelly......so maybe Stoops is the answer....lol

But that isn't what happened. Sweater vest resigned in May 2011,and they named Fickel the interim head coach for the 2011 season, they hired Meyer in November 2011.

Regardless the scenarios are about as polar opposite as you can get.

Take a flyer and hire Jay Harbaugh

And yes I'm joking. Unless 10 years from now he is blowing up and then I told you so
I think your ten years from now prediction is actually quite good. What originally looked like a nepotism hire has turned out well for us. Already can coach multiple positions and a good recruiter who kids love. With that said, the next ""younger" guy on our staff that will become a name is Chris Partridge. There is a reason he was the one assistant DJ Durkin tried to poach when he took the Maryland job. Partridge is now learning the ins and outs of Don Brown's D and he is by far the best recruiter on our staff...you can send him anywhere, and within a few months will have connections. 247 named him recruiter of the year this past year and scout, gave him the same honor the year before. Whoever gives him his first DC job coukd strike gold with him.

mullen was one i was interested in 3 years ago. I had heard from a couple guys down that way that he was interested in leaving as you're just not going to win big at Miss St when you play Bama, LSU, and Auburn every year. Could be a pretty big year for him this year if they keep it rolling.

Mullen just got a big contract extension. We're not going to spend millions to buy out and hire a guy who's never won anything, while we're still paying buyouts on the last 2 guys we fired.

Okay, we are starting to get into so crazy numbers talk here with buyouts and paying coaches to leave. Bo is still on the books, SE is still on the books, MR would still be on the books, buyout to get a coach, if Miles has another bad year he is probably gone and he would be on the books. We just paid our women's basketball coach 1.2 million to go away.

I have heard that the athletic department has the money, but that is pissing away a lot of $s in a real short time period. I will also be willing to bet that ticket prices for next season for football and basketball. That is a whole lot of accounting just to pay people who you don't want to employ anymore.

Not that I want Gundy, but the athletic department better be ready to spend in that range. If not God help us.

$6 million a year puts Gundy in the top 4 behind only Saban, Harbaugh and Meyer. Is Gundy the 4th best football coach in America? Is Gundy going to put Nebraska on par with Alabama, Michigan and Ohio St? That's a tough call

100% doable. Let's quit messing around and write the check.

This is actually one that makes sense if the mullet would be willing to come here. Will his style be successful in the B1G? Can't say, but we would definitely put some points on the board. And he has a damn good track record of coaching up 3* players into very good football players.

Another bonus, you couldn't find anyone in the media that would be able to argue that we didn't hit a homerun. Take any positives as you can get them.

Rushed a bit in my earlier post. I have no idea if we should hire Gundy or not. Just feel that whomever we hire, we had better be prepared to open up the pocket book and pay if needed.

If Riley is fired....

If you go cheap on your next hire there is a better chance you are looking for and paying off another coach in 3-5 years.

You went the affordable route for an experienced coach...and here you are...you already did this....

Can you imagine Gundy, who is a man, getting hired by Nebraska? He would truly be "the man" in Lincoln. However, reality says he won't be the man at Nebraska.

I am on record saying Gundy is a extremely good coach. He has a great track record of taking 3 star kids and grooming them to compete against 4 and 5 star kids. He takes average and makes it better. What coach at Nebraska can you say has gotten the most out of his players in this century? Put Gundy at Nebraska and I really think you have something. JMO
