If MJ were a WR coach, what schools would want him as a HC?

Serious question. If MJ were still the WR coach only, would other schools pursue him as a HC?

Colorado? Charlotte?

Don't know. Don't really care. I don't think he is gonna be the HC here next season. I'm pretty sure he'll be here in some capacity.

He's done about as well as I've expected all things considered. It's hard to undue the last 4 years in 9 weeks time.

I think his best position is our receiver coach. Colorado will get Illinois defensive coordinator as HC and we get the pleasure of playing them 2nd game next year in Boulder.

I think someone will hire Mickey as their HC after what he has done with this dumpster fire. When he leaves a lot of this team will go with him plus a lot of next class
I hope he takes all of them. So they can all suck together again.

Probably the same number of schools that pursued Dabo as a WR coach only. This is probably the hypothetical situation I dislike the most, because the reality is we are where we are. And in reality he has taken a team that top to bottom talent wise is probably the worst we have had, he has taken the same team that lost to probably the worst P5 school in the country this year and made them competitive. Has he made mistakes yes, but at least we had a coach learning on the fly in what would is a throw away year. If people can’t see the improvement this team has had since the Oklahoma game then they are blind. The O-Line gave up 2 sacks. Up until Casey went out we were moving the ball on the #1 defensive unit in the country. Idk if MJ will get the job or not, but judging him only on wins and losses with the sand which he was given would be dumb. I’m glad Trev is smarter than that.

Assuming we lose out - you think another FCS program will hire a guy who went 2-7 as an interim coach and has never even been a coordinator?

I wish people would stop the Dabo comparisons. For one, Dabo had a winning record as interim coach. But even as just a WR coach, he was known as the best recruiting assistant in all of college football. He had brought in five consecutive Top 20 recruiting classes to Clemson as their main recruiter (including several Top 10 classes), even though the program wasn't winning much. Clemson had plenty of talent, they just needed better coaching.

Nebraska is in a much different situation, we don't have much talent at at all. This will be a complete rebuild. I don't think that's a job you want to risk on a guy with very little D-I coaching experience.

Yes we don't have the talent that Clemson had when Dabo took over but we have a guy that can get us into the top 25 in recruiting classes every single year. Make no mistake, if Mickey does not get the full time gig, there is no way he will stay. It would be bad for the locker room. Then we go from what is right now the 35th best recruiting class, will go higher if mickey stays to what wont even be a top 75 recruiting class.

You don’t know that for a fact whether he leaves or stays..

I think you're wrong. What exactly has he done here that would turn a P5 AD's head compared to other candidates who are winning games this year? He's done a great job steering a dumpster fire through the rest of a meaningless season. Try to be objective, AD's aren't looking for coaches that go 2-7 as interims. Imagine selling that to boosters and a fanbase.

A sunbelt team in LSUs shadow might think his record as an interim at NU isn’t as important as the skills he exhibited in navigating this mess.

I think a 2-7 record as an interim would still be a really tough sell at a Sunbelt school. But maybe he won't be 2-7 and there's no question he is a good coach. A lot depends on how the next 4 games go. Anyone who doesn't think the next 4 weekends could get REALLY ugly is probably not paying attention. All of the mojo from the IU and Rutgers wins is gone, this team is on the brink.

Who? A P5 school? I love Mickey, but he may end up going 2-7 as interim, hard to imagine someone hiring him as HC if that is the case.

I said in another post, NU has been in some ugly situations before, but we might be entering the ugliest time we've ever seen.

Man, woman and child is it gonna get ugly.

His brother said he passed on many promotions and NFL positions as well... Stop being so short-sided, not everyone is in it for the Glory and power, some are in it to make men out of boys.
that is admirable - and if true then he has decided that being a head coach of a major program isn't a priority

for better or worse there is a pretty well established blue print to advance in the coaching profession that involves being a head coach at smaller schools - then a G5 school or a coordinator role at a power 5 school

if MJ has spurned these opportunities when presented in the past for a higher purpose, again that is admirable, but he has made a conscious decision regarding his career path

if he wants to get on the path now - maybe he stays at nebraska in a coordinator role - passing game or OC - if the head coach is the real OC or leaves and takes a smaller school head coaching job (if that option is available)

Love these serious hypothetical questions

Let’s ignore facts and pretend facts were different

can’t ignore MJ being HC right now. Can’t ignore that Trev has more insight to what kind of leader MJ is then any other school does

Get? It already is ugly. I don’t think the team quits on Mickey and I expect him to return as a highly paid WR/Assistant head coach. It’s a great gig without done of the headaches and time commitment.

Because his main purpose of being a coach is the ability to turn snot-nosed kids into men of honor and dignity... You don't think this is the perfect position to do this? Hmmmmm

If MJ is worth his weight in gold on the recruiting scene then make position and pay accordingly.

WR/lead recruiting coordinator and pay him a million+

head coaches have too many other responsibilities to dedicate a significant amount of time on the road in the weeds as a lead recruiter.

Wrong - the main purpose of a head coach at power 5 programs is to win games

College football is a business and turning boys into men means very little in today's college football world. The only thing that coaches are judged on is the number of wins and losses on their record.
