I wonder if some fans on here know we won?

Opened 4 different threads first thing ,this morning, in order

1-"Our D looks like a million bucks"
2-"Leaving early"
3-"I went to the game and tailgated"
4-"Clown show"

I turned the game off and went to bed with about 5 or 6 minutes left, certain we had won. After opening those 4 posts I went and double checked the score thinking we'd somehow gagged... and lost. Nope, we won.

Yes. It's painful to be a Husker fan, but there is some reason for the reaction. To allow Ark State to get within 11 yards of the end zone where a PAT goes to OT and a 2 pt conversion could finish the game exposes that the optimism felt by many may have been false.

Happy to have won. But it was dangerously close to a collapse and it was only two seasons ago when we saw nearly every possible collapse come true.

Well, it actually turns out the games are 60 minutes long. And (I even checked the rules on this) the last 6 minutes does in fact count in the final tally, just as the previous 54 does. I know, crazy right.

There's proper cause for some consternation.

Collapse is the wrong word I think. To me, more than our porous defense, the most disappointing and truly disheartening thing was our poor clock management and play calling in the 4th when we were up by two touchdown's, had the momentum, and our running game was working. Tanner Lee did not have a great 4th quarter and Langs called too many pass plays. I just kept having flashbacks to three years ago with BYU and Illinois. We did not "collapse" in those games. We just didn't "finish" and left ourselves vulnerable

I thought the same thing Penny, Langs play calling at times makes you wonder what the hell he is thinking..

Some of the posters are just shit stirrers and do not post regularly, so I take some their comments with a grain of salt...

I knew we would have growing pains on defense to start the season and I still wonder if we have the right personal at this time to run this 3-4 D we need better push off the edge plan and simple.

l try really hard to stay off these boards on game day.

After sleeping on it I feel better than I did last night.

On offense -

Outside of a 3 for 8 4th quarter, I thought Tanner Lee played well.

Tre Bryant looked strong and rested

Zero turnovers

1 sack allowed

On defense -

After halftime their QB was 18 for 32 for 170

They could never establish the run 21 for 82 yards

Big plays were limited.

Lamar Jackson played better

I thought there were adjustment made at the half to take away some of what Ark St does.

I liked the number of players that got a chance to play.

Obviously there were some negatives -

I would have liked to see us keep the ball on the ground more in the 4th quarter. With that said, the pass calls were safe calls and Lee needs to finish better than 3 for 8.

There were too many times we were put in a mismatch on the outside defensively.

Tackling, outside of Kalu, wasn't strong

The good news is that a lot of young players got to to play and there should be some improvement game 1 to game 2.

Willie Taggart's offense at Oregon is a much more run based and not a bunch of short passes. So the challenges will be different.

On to next week 1-0

One of the positives of this game was that we were forced to play a ton of backups because of the number of plays they ran. They gave us a good prep for Oregon.

The poor clock management falls squarely on Danny's lack of teaching. It seems we may never work on this in practice or he is in awe of the situation and doesn't know what to do.

Unfortunately it seems once he calls the play his coaching responsibilities stop. This was a problem with TA and now Lee. Running plays with 25 seconds still on the clock is amateurish at best when the game is on the line.
A coach with an NFL background should know better.

Well we were warned about this with Riley and staff from some Oregon St fans that had the same hindsight that they complained about....

Not doubting you at all but I didn't see that. This is even more troubling then.

That was not poor clock management. We were up two scores. Our defense had seemingly adjusted to ASU's offense. We have Tanner Lee and a very good receiving corps. The criticism basically amounts to "call plays that work".

Lots of teaching material on video from this game. I really didn't think the play calling was terrible down the stretch. We ran the ball quite a bit but we had a couple of drives killed by penalties that put us in bad down and distance situations. AkSU sold out to stop the run late there when they knew we wanted to kill the clock. I think every time we missed on a pass play I found myself cursing and saying run the ball...until Lee would connect for a first down. IMO, we ran the ball effectively in part because we threw it effectively.

It's not the play calling I'm referring to but rather running the play with 25 seconds left on the clock each time.

Nailed it. We're not a power running team. We have to be able to pass on third and short, if for no other reason to keep future defenses honest.

Might well be the reason Diaco skipped the presser. He can help the players play better but there isn't much he can do with a fair haired OC and if the fans are pissed at Langsdorf so much more the defensive coaches.

Diaco probably needed a Valium and shot or two of Jack after that ending. He knows that a loss would have fallen squarely at his feet. He'll talk to the media this week some time and maybe that's better for a super intense guy like him. Let him watch the video, analyze what happened and then answer the questions with his blood pressure under control. I don't need to see him "right now". I can wait.

We were talking about the 25 second clock and clock management.

You object to my "Leaving early" thread? Please explain your objections. I'd like to know why calling out the tens of thousands of "fans" who raced out with the game very much in doubt offends you? And you turned the game off with the outcome in doubt. You are hardly one to be critical.

Yes, and situations like the end of the 1st half where we completed a 2nd down pass for -1 yards and it was 3rd and 11 at the 24 with 1:10 or so left and we call a timeout. Odds are you are going to have to settle for a field goal and if you do get the first down, 30 some seconds is enough time to run 3 plays for the TD especially with 2 timeouts in your pocket. Gave them too much time on their subsequent drive and allowed them to get a field goal.

Kicking the ball out of bounds gave them the ball at the 35. That didn't help

Not that it really matters...but their QB's stats was much better than that at half.

I said after the first half, not at the half
Ahh my bad. I read it as after the end of the half. Defense played a bit better in the second half but without watching the game again I wonder how much of that was due to special teams pinning ASU deep. We were pretty horrible between the 20's. They always say the biggest improvement is week 1 to week 2..,hope that's true for us.

Who cares what other people do with their time. If someone wants to leave that's on them.
There were at least two penalties that appeared to be directly related to crowd noise, but that was no problem for last two ASU drives. So, I care and don't care that you don't. If you were one of the 25-30k who left early, I hope you sat in traffic.

I haven't seen anyone mention what a great on side kick that was at the end of the game..... Hard to defend the bounce that ball took!

Kudos for Arkansas State for their effort! I am optimistic that this game will make Nebraska better going forward. The effort was there for the Huskers as well, and now we have some techniques and schemes to improve. Go to work! GBR!

So in 70+ plays noise played a factor 2 times, and you were expecting more in the last 19 plays?

Secondly, you replying to me all but affirms you care what I think.

Amen to that!

We ran the clock to under 10 seconds from what I saw.

What is sooooo troubling about MR's clock mgmt., is MR is not a new head coach just learning to coach. He is almost 64 years old and has been around for years and years and years. This is something he should have mastered in high school coaching or at Alabama. Since he has been at Nebraska he has had bad time mgmt. MR is the head coach. He is responsible. If Langs cannot understand what that means that get a new OC. Do you think for 1 minute Nick Saban would put of with this kind of OC? Hell no.
