It seems the officials this year, and to some degree, last couple of years, have interjected themselves into the games and are deciding the outcomes of the games. Last night I watched the officials give the shaft to VT by having to 2 TD's nullified, taken off the board that kept VT from winning. One on a bogus holding call, the second on overturning a TD catch. The officials in the Wash, Rutgers game made many calls favoring Rutgers and stopping Washington drives. I have lost count on how TD's have been called back this year on penalties everytime a team scores on a long play. If the favored team is behind the 8 Ball, the officials bail them out on a regular basis.

One last rant: When will college football and the NFL adopt the XFL's process for reviewing plays? The XFL had two LARGE screens, and officials reviewing every play live in a booth. If there was a problem, they would stop play, have the decision in about 15 seconds, and play would resume. It was interesting listening to the reviewers talk through the process and explain it to the field judge. The officials on the field DO NOT need to be behind the microscopic screen watching reviews (probably porn clips) taking 5-10 minutes to make an effin decision. The game flowed smoother and faster, if they needed more time to view a play they would stop play until a decision was made, but that happened rarely. The NCAA and NFL are prehistoric in making changes to improve the quality of play. Personally, I think instant replay needs to be removed unless a flag is thrown and then you have 45 seconds to decide the outcome. If it takes longer than that, the play stands.

I'm done for now, thanks.

there sure seem to be some ridiculous calls and there's no review for those questionable calls. We've fallen victim to phantom holding calls several times. It's not an easy job but that woman last weekend should have never have been on the field. She was awful. There's very view truly competent people who want to pursue the jobs. Even the best make mistakes though.

There needs to be some accountability for the refs. They need to be reviewed and graded after each game and if their grade is below a certain amount they get demoted. There’s no repercussions for poor calls
I’ve said this numerous times the officials need to meet with the media after the game just like coaches and players instead of just leaving heck the league officials are pretty mum on talking. Stop hiding and face the music the fans and players deserve better

I texted my Husky younger brother last night. “Welcome to the Big Ten”” after he had texted these officials are terrible.

BUT, BUT, BUT... They send letters of apology to the coaches letter in the week, that should count for something. hahahaha

I’m convinced the female official was from illinois. She was gawd awful…

How about the no call horse collar tackle or the no call pass interference on consecutive plays on VTs last possession. BS.

And that itself is a judgement call. They called too much or not enough.

What sort of questions would you like them to be asked? "Why did you call pass interference on X play?" They will say "from my angle and in real time I thought that he grabbed his shoulder pad and restricted him as he tried to go up for the ball." What productive direction do you think the conversation could go from there?

It would be like putting a tackle up in front of a mic and asking "why did you miss your block on X play?" "Well, I meant to block him, but he got by me." Pointless.

This is exactly how it works already. They just don't announce publicly when an official gets reprimanded or when a crew is passed over for the biggest assignments because it wouldn't help anyone involved. Same way I doubt your boss takes out a spot in the newspaper (or, I guess in 2024, tweets) to announce that you've been told you screwed something up. Also, if they're "demoted," who is going to replace them? Do you want to call up a ref who's previously only worked lower levels, onto a crew they haven't worked with before, and just hope they're better than the other guy?

No one at any level in any sport thinks their officials are any good. That should tell you something about how damn difficult it is to do it at field level and at live speed. Go try it for a season. They're starving for officials basically everywhere - you can probably get into middle school and sub-varsity high school games in your area immediately next year.

I have less sympathy for screwups by replay officials who have all the time and technology the home viewers do and still manage to get things wrong.

I agree. The Husker TD in the first half that was nullified with a offensive pass interference call, a Wisconsin receiver was ruled he made a first down against USC when he clearly did not make it (an official was right there and he was overruled) and at the end of the first half an Alabama receiver was clearly interfered with and no flag. Deboer went nuts. I think these officials need to stand up to a mike and explain what they did or did not see.

B1G officials have commented in the past that they need to "send a message" to new coaches in the conference. Unfortunately their stupidity will likely end in physical consequences for one of them.

Washington was the beneficiary of many Calls by the Refs last night. Two Targeting calls that should be ejections on Washington were reversed and a couple of clear false starts on Washington that were not called. Refs not calling games correctly.

I’m not really defending the current refs because many of them suck, but for those of you saying it’s worse than it’s ever been- no it’s not. There have always been unbelievably shitty calls that have changed the outcome. Just 2 name a few NU related.
1. Penn State catch out of bounds probably cost us an MNC
2. Phantom block in the back call on Corey Dixon punt return against FSU
3. Eric Crouch face mask against KSU
Or, how about other teams games like the Oregon/Oklahoma on sides kick a few years back.
My point being (if i have a point) is that reffing is very difficult and at least with replay, they usually get the change of possession calls correct. Remember John Ruud destroying that OU guy on the kickoff return that was called down.
It’s just that before replay, you had to accept the bad calls and move on. So overall I think it’s better than the good ole days but still frustrating as hell when it doesn’t go your team’s way.
