Our 11 year old English Mastiff has been getting progressively more aggressive the last 6 months. He's nipped a couple guys that have tried to reach over the fence to pet him, plus he just seems a bit more on edge. He ended up full on biting a contractor that came to our house earlier this week. The guy decided to reach over our fence to pet our barking dog. The guy was super cool about it, but I am pretty sure if he wanted to he could retaliate with a lawyer.

After speaking with our vet, he recommended that we put the dog down before he really hurts someone and we are forced to put him down. What sucks is that he is as sweet as can be to my wife, me and to people that he knows. He's just gotten really weird about strangers lately.

I have a feeling he doesn't feel good. He doesn't really show many signs of anything being seriously wrong, but he is walking a little slower, takes his time when he lays down, and I think his eyesight is starting to go. Couple that with the fact that we got a new dog last summer and I think it has pushed him over the edge.

My heart has always gone out to the RSSers that have posted about having to put their dog down. I knew at some point this day would come for my dog. Knowing that it's coming doesn't ever seem to make it any easier. Yet I continue to choose to put my wife and me through the emotional hell that comes with losing a pet by getting another dog and starting the whole process over again. What's the definition of insanity again?
