Huskers are up

They're really trying to blow this one the last few innings after leading 8-1 going into the bottom of the 6th. Purdue has bases juiced with no outs in the bottom of the 8th. Huskers currently up 9-7.

Luensmann K for the 2nd out.
Pop up to Meyers for the 3rd out.

That could have been a lot worse. My goodness, this game is frustratingly exciting.

Back in the top of the 8th, Ben Miller hit an infield single (yes, Ben Miller) with Placzek on 1st and Boldt on 2nd. The ball was fielded deep by the 2B, his only play was at 1st. Placzek thought Boldt was going to try to go home and proceeded to 3rd, but Boldt stayed on the bag and Placzek got caught in a rundown. Bad baserunning, too bad because the bases would have been loaded for Schreiber. Rev hit a homerun earlier in the inning to extend the lead to 9-7.

In the bottom of the 8th, Luensmann gave up back to back singles to open the inning, then a man reached on a throwing error by Luensmann on a bunt. Fielder's choice allowed one run to score, couldn't quite get the doubleplay. Then the K and flyout to end the inning at 9-8 Huskers.

Lots of errors by NU today (and this weekend overall).

TOP 9th (9-8 Huskers)

Schreiber ground out to SS.
Meyers flied out to LF.
Alvarado doubled off the LF wall.
-Pitching change-
4-pitch walk to Fish, 4th ball is a wild pitch allowing Alvarado to advance to 3rd.
-Pitching change-
Scheppenbach grounds out to 2B to end the inning.

9-8 Huskers going into the bottom of the 9th.

We are doing everything possible to give this game away. Championship caliber teams do not perform like this. Hard to say going for a sweep and a 9-8 lead going into the bottom of the ninth is a disaster, but if we lose this game today against these guys it would be hard to swallow. I am wondering who is working with these players on just the fundamentals ... running themselves out of the inning in the 8th is a perfect example of those poor fundamentals. Not executing in the bottom of the 8th on a routine sacrifice play; more weak fundamentals. The team in the infield are fairly seasoned players and have no excuse to play this poorly. To be honest we've played poorly against arguably the worst team in the B1G and probably deserve to lose this in the bottom of the 9th. I hope Chad can hang in there for one more inning and save us against this embarrassing showing against Pur-don't.

BOTTOM 9th (9-8 Huskers)

Luensmann still on the hill.
First batter HBP to the head. Goes down for a couple minutes, but is going to stay in the game. Looked like he was going to leave for a second, but turned out the pitch broke his helmet and he was going to grab a new one.
Sac bunt, runner advances to 2nd. 1 out.
Groundout to P, Luensmann turns to man on 2nd but throws to 1st. Runner advances to 3rd. 2 out.
Strikeout swinging to end the game.

Huskers win 9-8.

That was way too close. Big moment right there to hold on for the win and the sweep.

A very shaky game. Huskers committed multiple costly errors that resulted in 2-3 runs for Purdue. If we play a better team this weekend we lose today due to errors and bad relief pitching. Have to shore up multiple areas of the game.

I guess I am glad we picked Purdue to play our worst series defensively. Better now then against MSU later (well hopefully anyways). I take it as a good thing if we play this poorly and still get the sweep. Now if we see to it that it dont happen again.
