Husker Wrestling

So far so good in semifinals
Liam Cronin (Nebraska) won by decision over Michael DeAugustino (Northwestern) (Dec 2-1)
Brock Hardy (Nebraska) won by decision over Beau Bartlett (Penn State) (Dec 7-3)
Peyton Robb (Nebraska) won by decision over Chase Saldate (Michigan State) (Dec 4-3)
Mikey Labriola 174

174 pounds: No. 2 Mikey Labriola outscrambles No. 3 Ethan Smith

FIRST PERIOD: Scorless after the first three minutes.
SECOND PERIOD: Smith chooses down to start the second period. Smith escapes, giving up just 10 seconds of riding time, and these two are back to their feet. No takedowns, and we're on to the third.

THIRD PERIOD: Labriola chooses down to start the third, and he picks up two points on a reversal. Escape Smith, and it's 3-2 with Labriola in the lead. Riding time is not a factor. Thirty seconds to go. Scramble city! Takedown Labriola! The Cornhusker becomes yet another finalist for Nberaska, as he takes this match 4-2.

Silas Allred 197 still to come

I predicted at the start of the season that Labriola would win a national championship. But Robb seems a better pick. Labriola has been a lot more conservative this year. He is still undefeated but quite a few 1-2 point wins.

Cronin 2 seed will wrestle #1 seed as will Hardy #3 seed. Both opponents from Iowa. Robb is #1 seed and will wrestle #2 seed. Labriola will go against #1 seed. Just in:

197 pounds: No. 2 Silas Allred edges out No. 3 Zac Braunagel 4-3

FIRST PERIOD: Allred is on the attack early, looking for a takedown on the edge.
SECOND PERIOD: Allred chooses down to start the second period, and he's on the board first with an escape. Allred, like Max Dean on the mat next to him, scores a short time takedown in the second, but Illinois throws the challenge brick.
THIRD PERIOD: Braunagel ties it up, 3-3, and this one is closer than expected. Allred holds on though, and he takes the win 4-3.

Tough matchups tomorrow. 4 of 5 will wrestle #1 seeds. Robb is the #1 seed and will wrestle #2.

Very strong showing for Nebraska! Brock Hardy is wrestling great and only lost by 2 points against Woods in Iowa City this year. Labriola needs to come out swinging and score first.

Hoping Cronin puts up a better battle against Spencer Lee than he did in their dual match. Hardy has been impressive since Christmas. Robb more so. Allred is coming on. Labriola needs to turn it on.

Pinto looks like Labriola at the same stage of their careers. Exciting matches! Would have been nice to have had Lovett this year.

In consolations @ 165 lbs #10 Wilson puts up great fight against #2 Amine but loses in sudden victory. @184 #7 Pinto has early lead but loses to #4 Finesilver.

Cronin loses to Lee in 125 lb final. No shame there. Lee is probably the most dominant wrestler for his weight class in the country.

Losing by 5 seems like a great accomplishment. Believe Lee had won 20-2 and 17-0 in the qtrs and semis.

Brock not getting the takedown after getting that single leg sums up the difference between Nebraska wrestling and penn state or iowa wrestling. Technically goid but just dont have the fortitude for that extra.
