It wasn’t just using his university-issued phone to arrange meetings with escorts that got him fired at Ole Miss. This is from Wikipedia:
“Under Freeze, the Ole Miss football program committed various recruiting and academic violations that figured in the NCAA's decision to expunge 27 of Freeze's wins and ban it from post-season play for two years.”

I can’t see Alberts hiring someone with that in his background.

so he called a few hookers and was a little ahead of the curve on NIL. who gives a shit? he was doing what he thought gave him the best chance to land the best players, and you're silly if you don't realize he's just the first one who got caught.

furthermore, 5 years is a lot of time for someone to develop and change.

fun fact, only 3 coaches have beaten Nick Saban in back-to-back years. 2 of them have won National Championships, the other one is named Hugh Freeze.

Freeze is on that list of guys like Urban Meyer who would be 100% homerun hires and guaranteed success.

The "cheating" he did is something that no one cares about and for the most part is not even cheating anymore.

Calling "hookers" from his school phone, who cares? Except for maybe dudes trapped in a marriage they hate and wish that they could call someone.

Not sure why certain folks suck off Hugh Freeze as some transformative winner. He's done ok at Liberty, but at Ole Miss he had one good year at 10-3. Most years he was like 3-5 in conference as well. We can do better. I could care less about if he was trying to get a little pussy, but he was pretty medicore at Ole Miss (his only major job).

9 & 10 win seasons are a weird definition of average when those included wins over Alabama.

Freeze took over a shit program and did well against top Alabama, LSU, and Auburn teams.

in 2014 & 2015, Ole Miss played 12 ranked teams and went 19-7 over that span.

He also went 5-7 in his last year. You can cherry pick certain years all you want, but his overall record is pretty mediocre at Ole Miss and if he was this Urban Meyer type that everyone makes him out to be, he should be coaching at a major program and not Liberty. There are plenty of doormat Power 5 programs that would be willing to take a chance on a Hugh Freeze type guy if he was a sure thing winner, but that hasn't happened. I wonder why?

have you looked at their schedule that year? They played two top 5 teams in the first 3 weeks, and a total of 7 ranked teams, then their star QB (Chad Kelly) tore his ACL

also, he’s been killing it at Liberty (0.733 win %), and refused to interview with South Carolina after Muschamp & Auburn after Malzahn.

let’s not pretend he’s Frank Solich

If AD Alberts is serious about winning, which i don't think he is, hiring a HC with the winning history of Hugh Freeze is a must.

This hire will show immediately if AD Alberts is serious about winning.

Yes, Hugh Freeze has made some mistakes in his past. He'll be the first to tell you that. But he has found freedom at Liberty U.

If we were talking about rape, murder, or child abuse I would get it.

If it was so bad I would think the guy would never get a job again.

As it so happens he does, he is killing it, and he most likely will have a job at a P5 school before he retires.

And Nebraska can watch that guy take another program and lap them on the field.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but who does Liberty even play? I mean it looks like Freeze was 8-5, 10-1, 8-5 and now 7-1 so far this year, but it is Liberty....

As for the downside question OP asked:

The downside is the risk that he would call hookers again....hopefully with his own burner this time. Joking aside, I think this is a pretty low risk in all seriousness.

Players getting paid isn't a thing anymore.

The only other thing would be people not being able to forgive a guy who didn't personally offend them and presumably has been forgiven by those most affected.

I'll take Freeze and you take Aranda, Rhule, Liepold, BOB, Campbell, or any other .600 or 2 year HC.

Put your child up on the alter and tell me who you trust to win.
aranda with mickey....and have both of them working on getting a&m, bama, ut and ohio state recruits thru nil..

Freeze isn't leaving Liberty. If he was, he'd be the head guy at SC or Auburn. Both those programs can pay top $$$$.

During their 10-1 season, Liberty beat two ACC teams and they beat Coastal Carolina in a bowl game, they handed Coastal Carolina their only loss of the season.
Ok... ACC is the worst of the Power 5 conferences and Coastal plays no one.... Still have yet to see the argument that he is a sure thing.
And one of those "ACC" Wins was against a 1-10 Syracuse team and 5-6 VATech team..

I honestly don't see the appeal of Aranda yet. He did have a12 win season and Sugar bowl win. He's thin on HC experience. Unless he goes on a tear, he's heading towards a ho hum season. I think Mickey is only a sliver less experienced.

From what I've heard they have worked with one another.

I don't think people realize just how lame Ole Miss FB usually is.

They have been to like 35 bowl games and in over 120 of FB seasons they have like 600 wins.

This is a school that has the speed limit set at 18 on campus in honor of Archie Manning...still.
That’s the reason why I like Lane awful lot despite for the fact he goes for it on 4th down more than I desire..

Just don’t think Trev is comfortable hiring Freeze not saying he wouldn’t be successful here.

thats why I want aranda...have you ever heard him talk to the press? he's like a vulcan dr. tom...
gives them 0.0 material to dramatize NU football. aranda is a straight shooter..no hugh freeze drama

plus he has the best recruiting class in the big 12 this year.

him and mickey would be the recruiting dynamic duel...
mickey is offense minded, aranda is defense minded
plus aranda would bring the #11 dc in with him...
and if you been watching our defense this year, that would be a good thing...

I'm ok with mickey as hc (maybe depending on how we play this year)
but mickey and aranda...thats like having 2 dollars instead of 1 dollar.

I agree and I think Trev is going to hire an older well established coach...or a dude that will "fall in line" so to speak.

Well I've got to admit, it was extremely stupid to use a company phone for "personal use". Nothing you do with company property is private, and certainly not for such "personal business needs". Get smarter fella and use a burner phone. That said, I think I can forgive him if he could win at a high level here.

I haven't heard him talk but I've never listened to Saban or Meyer or Dabo. Hack I didn't even listen to Tom O. much.

I like to let their on field results talk to me.

If Aranda becomes the HC I will listen to his initial speech and then wait until his seasons talk to me.

Let's see if anyone else hires him. It is not like Nebraska has been the only school that doesn't want any part of Freeze. Liberty was the only school who would take a chance on him. I think he is a pretty shaky character. With all the BS the Huskers have delt with why take on a guy who has baggage?

...kinda funny we're debating whether we can skirt the ethics of such a hire when Liberty took the risk.
