It's going to be really hard for many of these kids to stay focused if they're raking in hundreds of thousands right out of HS. What is the percentage of professional athletes who are broke just a few years after they retire? Now we think it's a good idea to hand even younger and less mature kids a bunch of money when they aren't ready to handle it?

How many of these kids won't reach their potential and miss out on a pro contract because they can't handle their money and lose motivation?

This is going to get ugly.

How many of us would have been able to focus on anything except 👩‍🦰 and 🍺 if somebody handed us a fist full of dollars.

So many of these deals are going to have contingencies and other requirements. There aren't enough boosters with enough money to keep 85 players on 130 D1 teams rolling in dough. Add to that the number of donors that are investing millions in infrastructure and new buildings. There will come a tipping point. Does the university get taken care of or will it be the players. When facilities start to become antiquated, will the donors pay to continue to keep up, or will players still come to places that have lesser facilities but more NIL?

Yep the schools that are pulling in tens of hundreds of millions are going to have to decide how to allocate resources in order to best compete - or if they want to compete at all when they could essentially do very little and survive easily on massive conference payouts

so far I'm ok with the portal, we lost hausmen, but would we of had a offense last year without thompson, palmer and washington?
ohio state, usc, the sec were going to be paying players, nil or not...so it's good that we can do it now.
plus their 5 star benches probably cost alot more.
I can see coaches getting alot more money, having to deal with high turnover..
I'm not so sure about chemistry on a team any more, if players are turned over alot.
I think recruiting the 500 mile radius will help
there's alot more variables now, which could be a good or bad thing depending on how one plays their cards

From an NCAA standpoint there is nothing that can be done about NIL. It's now the law. The NCAA just needs to come down hard on tampering and make students think twice about rolling the dice on the portal and getting stuck in a situation that is far, far worse.

But if University Presidents really wanted to make this about academics, they could have the NCAA mandate a dollar figure that would go to each football program (and do it for each sport). The rest of the income would then go to the academic side of the equation. It would be a way to help control college costs and truly make colleges academic institutions with sports programs rather than sports program entities that have academics on the side. The result would be schools competing on a relatively equal footing. It won't happen because of greed...but it could if hypocrisy wasn't so rampant.
