How long will this last?

I think most people were fine with calling it the Coronavirus until the Chinese government decided to cover it up and then blame this on US soldiers. President Trump doesn’t let other countries try to get away with that BS. FYI there are countless times where the media called it the Wuhan virus or similar names before Trump canceled flights to China and was labeled a racist for doing so. Those are facts.

That number is going to keep skyrocketing higher too due to all the extra testing that will be taking place.
The rise in case fatalities will likely lag new infections by about a week. Hospitalized patients on average seem to be dying a week after onset of symptoms. The CFR may not change too much just due to the large increase in testing that is going to take place this week which will allow us to find way more mild infections.

We have moved up from 6th most cases in country to #3rd most. We have added 7,300 new cases so far just today. Yikes!

There is a lag of infections based on testing and symptoms showing, it’s likely much higher.

I hope our government is focused on funding hospitals, many have stopped elective procedures to prep for cases, this will drastically reduce cash flow for hospitals and punk many on the brink.

It’s not a short term solution, but we need to rethink healthcare training in this country. We need more medical schools churning out doctors, we need more nurses and providers in the system. We need to increase our provider pool to reduce wait times and be better prepared to treat future pandemics.

One issue right now is that government mandated computerized record keeping has decreased the efficiency of physicians by 30%. That's right. 30%. They are required by law to sit and click damned buttons on a computer in a poorly designed system so that it's easier for the government to track fraud and for lawyers to sue them. It's added over 2 hours a day to my wife's work day.

Most everyone is behaving now, thank goodness. I hope this goes quickly because I feel like I’m going to work at a powder keg waiting to go off. The longer stores are short on certain items and kids are out of school just scares me. However, I’ve got a bad feeling that in order to achieve the goal that everyone wants, this is going to be a long haul.
You are giving our population way too much credit if you think most everyone is behaving. I went for a walk in my subdivision and a neighbor has 13 cars parked at their house. Idiots like way too many of our population . They just don’t get it.

If you are in most small towns in Nebraska, the risk is extremely low right now. That will change as the community spread in Omaha starts leaking out in to your area. I went out for dinner last night but that's probably the last time for a long time. Weird.

I haven't eaten out in 5+ years, all willingly tho.
I wanna live that quarantine life but I'm currently working 55 hours/week. I'm grateful that I have income at this moment.

I mean the civil disorder type stuff. Thank goodness the trucks are still delivering to stores. Things like that and the kids hitting the beaches in spring break? We’ll like Ron White says...cant fix stupid.

When people start coming to blows over toilet paper in WalMart like happened this past week we're not far off. The question is will the first riot be in New York or LA?

If you believe the China numbers, 90% of their cases have recovered. They’ve shut down their temporary hospitals. They first reported numerous cases on Dec 31 and the first death on Jan 11. So approx 2-3 months they got a handle on things and have the advantage of not having to worry about things like freedom and individual rights. Can we do better?

I spent 7 years working for a major EMR vendor, the sheer volume of revenue driven by mandates helped a lot of our revenue. I also spent 6 years working directly for a hospital. The systems do help, relationships with advocates inside the vendors helps. But trying to build a system when every doc wants their own customizations is a PITA.

I know we won't accurately now the percentages. Which is why it's so crazy for you to sit here and say "a fairly high percentage" as if you could be any less specific.

I'm not saying your making stuff up. But it's highly likely you're greatly overstating it. As I said before I appreciate that you're trying to look at the worst case scenario, but that's not how we live our lives. I guess I'm just stupid for that.

Please do look at Italy

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-italy-tally-idUSKBN2172VL

Read up on Italy. It shows this all an incredible over reaction.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-italy-tally-idUSKBN2172VL

60-70% of Italy's deaths are are due to a high chinese population who had been traveling to and from China at the beginning of all of this.

Some 41% of all those who died were aged between 80-89, with the 70-79 age group accounting for a further 35%.

Italy has the oldest population in the world after Japan, with some 23% of people aged over age 65. Medical experts say these demographics could explain why the death toll here is so much higher than anywhere else in the world.

The ISS report, based on a survey of 3,200 of the dead, said men accounted for 70.6% of the deaths and women 29.4%. The median age for the women who died was 82 against 79 for men.

America has 70 million people over 60. Yeah, Italy has a lot of old men who smoke and have bad hearts. What is America full of fit and skinny young people? We are the sickest, fastest, and one of the oldest nations on the planet. We have little knowledge of self-care and self-management and our health care system is designed to encourage sickness and treatment and not prevent treatment. Every single fiber of society should move to prevent treatment in a pandemic but that isn't how this the things works in America...Germany, South Korea have semi-intelligent and healthy populations who believe personal responsibility for ones health. America does not.

There is hope...America does not regularly live in multi-generational setups...Italy and Spain do...we have more space in general and we value separation and independence from friends and family. We aren't as old and our elderly are separated in society and have a chance to stay isolated...

Italy is not the U.S. It has a very elderly population, with many multi-generational households, where people greet with kisses on the cheek, and a very high percentage of smokers. They also have direct flights from Wuhan and employ thousands of people from there in their factories.

And when our government was shutting down travel from China, their government was making videos like this:

And selling their stock. Our senators sold their stock like a mo fo.

My problem with "Kung Flu" is that it reminds me of something a second grader would come up with. A weak effort by someone who thought they were being clever. But it was lame instead. And nothing worse than someone who keeps repeating the same lame joke again and again because they legit keep thinking they are hilarious. It's like dude stop, you're embarrassing yourself.
And my problem with terms like 'Asian Flu' or 'Chinese Flu' etc is that it's too generic and not specific enough. I'm sure there has been more than one flu that originated in Asia sometime in the history of this planet. I went with 'Wuhan virus' for a while because that was the speculated point of origin and it needed to be differentiated from other coronaviruses. Covid-19 works just fine now.

But call it what you want, I think you also need to consider tone, context, etc by whomever is saying it when considering if it is racist or not.
Especially if they insist calling it covid19, like theyre hiding behind it. Not everone, but so many do.

You nailed it, it's been the wuhan since it started, gives location, and unfortunately, it needs to be specific.

There's at least 15 or so other virus/outbreaks/plagues that are named from where they are originated and I don't know of anyone that has been picked on for it.

In 2015 WHO decided to stop using origin as possible name to avoid possible blowback to origin. I still will think of it as the wuhan flu myself as it's a memorial to the folks who suffered through it.

And it should stop, COVID-19 is perfectly fine. The last few rounds we called H1N1 and Ebola, we did have MERS which was a region, but SARS before that. I know it’s fun to call things by racist names, but we can, and should, do better.

When did it become racist?

And contrary to the reporting by some news outlets it was from both parties. I knew roughly the same time they did that this was going to be really bad and I wish I had taken similar action in our retirement funds to cut my losses. We ALL had warning. I guess I was more concerned with the physical health of people than I was the stock market. They really didn't have any knowledge that wasn't available on the internet IMO by the time they sold the stock. That said, IF I were them I would resign and maybe offer to give all of the money I would have otherwise lost to food banks and other charities that will be at the forefront of helping people hurt by this thing.

This pandemic is a case for why socialism will never work. Millions facing health issues and possible death won't even get ones to cooperate.

It's almost in those systems, the government HAS to intervene from people working it out on their own.

yep. Leads to communism
There's always an element that needs government knows best direction, just look at our beaches.
But, learning will come sooner to even some of those, but it wont be the government that has then learn their lessons.
But, to make it the norm, the granularity you need turns it into communism, where those intrusions constantly have to be reassured in those peoples lives, so even calling a virus from which it came becomes a challenge to such a system. Those leaders are paranoid, not of the rest of the world, but from their very own people.

I hate saving face without grace.

Probably fake. But this is Maga country. Just ask Jussie Smollet.

You can find anecdotal evidence to support anything. Doesn't make it true. You should know this, but you just want to push your agenda.

You think 10 articles from 7 sources (many showing video evidence and some detailing arrests) and CDC guidance are fake?

Do the people who are attacking seem like the people who would tune in for Trump's conferences? Everyone knows the virus came from Asia and they look Asian and these attackers are assholes. Probably pissed that the virus shut down the NBA and other of life's activities.

So the question is, does this translate into a huge number of deaths?

I don't think so. In fact, I think there is a very strong possibility the virus has peaked and the Bell Curve is near/at the top in the next 1-2 weeks.

No doubt there are idiots out there looking for any reason to act out their societal beliefs. That said, I don't think what we call this virus has anything to do with that. By now you would have to have been on a wilderness excursion without cell phone access to not know where this started and why it got out of hand. Clearly the Chinese government contributed significantly to this problem with their cover up. Unfortunately some people with Asian complexions are suffering due to idiots acting out. It's sad.

What I don't understand is, in the hotbeds of where supposedly these things are stomped down, where the narrative is owned, the leadership owned for decades, the media is owned, the social network is owned, why are there so many problems in utopias such as LA,New York etc?
One has to ask themselves, are these examples to place yourself above such things that creep around in one conscious, never having to face their own feelings?
Or, truly overcoming it, fighting it down if it sticks its hesd up, those bad feelings that come when 'someones different'.
You'd almost expect it in ones language, for instance, accusing a term as racist,or intended as racist, without knowing those that are 'different', and what they actually mean?
Some folks are missing out, never facing their problems, and never overcoming them.

The experts at the Columbia University Hospital in New York don't think this will peak for 3-4 weeks there and they are a week or more ahead of most areas in their outbreak. Their medical community already has multiple people sick and off work due to this virus. Hopefully some can return to work to replace those who will become ill over the next few weeks. I've said for several weeks that it will be May 1 before we know where this is going particularly in our area.

What we're doing is trying to limit the number of cases and deaths. Hopefully we're successful in that effort. Nobody knows for sure how this will turn out and much will depend on how people act.

Hopefully a mutation in our favor occurs, its very seasonal, and herd effect is deadly to it.

Except you have no evidence or scientific backing to what you “think”. It’s just whatever nonsense pops in your head.

A mutation in "our favor" is highly unlikely at this point. Even if there was one, it would have to become the dominant strain and produce immunity to the more virulent strain. That isn't likely to happen.

I have daily meetings with the head of Health and Environment in our state and they are saying it won’t peak here until mid May.

I heard it was three R and one D. Doesn't matter to me. I don't listen to propaganda from either side. I do disagree though. We didn't have the same warning. What we had was conflicting information. And also a blatant lack of alarm. The senators heard directly from government health officials in late January and were alarmed enough to sell millions in stock-- their money, obviously they believed very strongly in it to make that drastic of a financial move-- they didn't say a word about that concern PUBLICLY until weeks later.
