How dangerous is Minneapolis now? The Univ of Minnesota

Well the situation cannot help their recruiting effort, that's for sure. I would imagine the parents of players would not be too thrilled to have their sons going to Minnesota right now.

The whole issue with the police (in my opinion) is not necessarily racial by nature.

The police changed after 9/11. They became more militarized, and the rules for engagement changed because of the threat of IEDs and terrorism. This is not necessarily a white/black thing.. It could have been white people in Breonna's apartment with the same results.

This is the one thing I never hear people talk about. Obeying an officer is a good start, but again, until the rules of engagement get rolled back, any interaction with law enforcement is potentially deadly.

Your last sentence was tongue in cheek, correct? Do what the officer says, and you won’t die... simple as that.

well I do think often times in these situations, you see that someone is not obeying or listening to the officer, and then it becomes a problem.

I also think, the officers are way too quick to use deadly force, and that changed after 9/11.

You used to be able to run away from police, and they had to chase you. Now, it's a gray area and seems they can just pop off a few rounds into your back. That to me, is a problem with the rules for engagement.

But in August, the city’s charter commission decided it needed more time to consider the council’s proposal. That killed any chance that voters would see the proposal on the ballot this November. The commission’s actions essentially halted any effort to defund or dismantle the police department until at least next year.

So, it’s incorrect to say the police department has been defunded, as in, an overhaul or abolition of MPD as we know it.

But, it does depend how you’re defining “defunded.”

The City Council moved $1.1 million from the police to the health department to fund “violence interrupters” who would mediate conflicts and head off further trouble.

Facts.....always good to deal in them. Minneapolis isn't burning to the ground due to defunding the police.

Do you have some facts or evidence to support your post 9-11 conspiracy theories? While you’re at it, any new evidence of the Jersey Devil or Sasquatch you’d like to share?

We are actually texting right now about it. She is saying basically the same thing. People up there are being really weird lately.

Where is she at? I have a son at Macalester and he doesn't feel it is bad around there. I have been up there a few times and it seems fine.

Like most big cities it probably depends on where you are at.

I have no idea what you're talking about, but it is pretty common knowledge that the police changed in this country after 9/11.

There are plenty of articles you can read on the subject:

Wow you must have done the same drugs as NikkiSixx to draw your conspiracy theory conclusions.

Military article says military grade equipment increased back in the 60s. Still not sure what any of this has to do with cops shooting criminals that are attacking them with weapons.

I'm not talking about any specific situation. Just what I have seen is the engagement rules changed after 9/11 due to the war on terror. Those rules are now being applied to the general public with a police force that is now armed and equipped more like the military, and certainly better trained than the general military.

It's not a conspiracy theory, and I'm not sure how old you are, but the behavior of law enforcement the last 20 years is much different than it was before 2001.

The only thing that's changed is the prevalence of video recordings and a rise in the use of less-than-lethal methods of subduing criminals. Bring back the night sticks and fewer of these altercations will rise to the point where an officer if forced to shoot someone.

I live in the Minneapolis area and bike through downtown areas quite a bit. It's not scary at all, in fact it is very friendly.

Is that a quote? One of the articles I read indicated 100 officers have been fired/quit/undergoing treatment for PTSD, the force is diminished and not able to answer all the calls. When told officers weren’t responding at all, the Police Chief said that wasn’t right and he would look into it. That doesn’t sound like the chief saying to accept it to me...

Yeah, I saw that, and I don’t see it as the police chief saying just accept getting robbed or raped, as was claimed. It’s a list of guidelines designed to help one to be safe. IF you are accosted, give up your cell phone and wallet. Those can be replaced.

Nothing about accept getting raped. He doesn’t say don’t call the police. That comes after the crime, most of the time. He does say “Despite all our efforts, robberies may still occur!” The way I read it, he’s saying don’t be a hero and don’t be stupid. He isn’t saying if you live in Minneapolis, accept the fact that you will be robbed and raped. That’s a bit of an oversimplification.

Just when I think this board can't top a stupid thread here is one about MINNEAPOLIS being some kind of war zone where you're sure to die with your asshole bleeding.

It must be absolutely confusing and terrifying to live some of your lives. Minnesota. LOL

Seattle defunded 100 police officers. The city council wanted 50%. The city council has a veto proof majority. They were disappointed they only got the 100 and called it a down payment. Now if you remain on the force, how do you not pack up and relocate asap? Not only are you not wanted, it seems you could find yourself at higher risk of legal action just for doing your job.

is right there. Apparently they defunded the police and now rampant crime is exploding. If I was a Nebraska kid, I wouldn't go there.
Can you imagine what this is doing to the Police's moral? Not to mention for future recruiting ( of the police ).
Never rely on human beings to be consistently logical. However, you can count on them to be consistently psychological.

Downtown or uptown? Downtown is ok I guess if it’s daylight, but it is not safe at night. Been that way for several years now.
I go as far north as Target field or so, but have biked wherever the trails take me.

I have biked through the areas where the protests took place. Other than seeing the results of the Umbrella man's handy work, it seems safe to me.

I am just surprised the president hasn't handled this yet. He is the law and order president yet I see so much disorder...he cleared out that church with the army, paved way for the lord god to bless our nation, can't he go in there and solve it. He says he can, he says he is better at law enforcement than almost anyone.

State has to request help. President can’t force it.

Quiet down. Don't go quelling the narrative here. They have fired the police!! Hide the women and children!! The place is going up in socialist flames! It's completely anarchy!! Dont send our beloved Huskers into a war zone. They must play the games here!!

Geez. Talk about a bunch of snowflakes.

Downtown is safe during the day. Not at night... but please go walk around at night, and let us watch via Facebook live.

My daughter lives three blocks from target field. People are moving out of the downtown area and driving up real estate prices in suburbs. I've been here for four days walking everywhere. I feel safe, but there has been some damage done during protests. My daughter says protests just pop up now and then. She lives across the river from UofM campus. Heck this is no different then when I lived on 22nd and Vine in Lincoln and the neighbors were shooting at our apartment building because it was supposed to be built for low income but was filled with college students.

It is very different from when you lived on 22nd and Vine. You'd better wake up right now.
