biggest crap shoot known to man.

Success at one stop doesn't mean success at the next (ex: Frost & pretty much every hot commodity coach the year we hired him and too many others to list).

Although rarer, failure doesn't mean failure at the next stop either (ex: Sarkisian, Odom, Kiffin)

For every Saban & Meyer, there are many, many opposite examples.

It doesn't do any good to get your panties in a bunch over this stuff. Stress and anxiety shortens lifespans and all the crap posting probably hurts the program.

Coordinators are a bit easier than HCs. The hard part is when they run a system and need the right players to execute it. Position coaches shouldn't be that hard except for the dollars part and the recruiting part.

Assistant coaches are going to be more impacted by decisions made with the HC/Coordinators. I think assistant coaches make their mark on the recruiting trail more than anything. So if you are not getting a dude that can be a high level recruiter than you are making a bad hire.

Florida's State DC got a huge pay raise, extended his contract 3 years, and was walking on water in Tallahassee. The guy probably never paid for his own drinks. Then he was fired mid-season on November 9th. Did the guy forget how to coach?

That business is wild to me.

No, he made his money and had nothing to work for. He made his intentions known. Some folks are just in it for the money

Money changes people, unless you actually had to earn it to eat when you were younger.
Forgetting where you came from does you no favors in life.

It is a crapshoot. Why did Sark, who failed at USC, go on to have success at Texas? Why did Lane Kiffin, who also failed at USC, go on to have success at Ole Miss?
For one thing, Sark was a slobbering drunk at USC. Sark didn't set the world on fire at Washington either.
You forgot Kiffin failed in Oakland, Tennessee, and Florida Atlantic too.

Because Saban played a part in getting them those jobs.

Why are they successful now despite failing multiple times in the past???

Hmm, well what are the commonalities? Both of those coaches just happened to have been coordinators under the GOAT during their rehabilitation periods. Championship success tends to rub off into individual success as evidenced by Saban's coaching tree. Both coaches were also known to be highly talented coordinators. Learning under Saban certainly wouldn't hurt their program-building skills to turn their next head coaching stops into successes.

They both probably thought they knew everything at their previous stops.

Maybe they had to find out what they thought they knew, they didn't actually know.

They knew more and more about less and less until they knew everything about nothing.

The more you think you know, the more you know you don't know.

Under Saban, they actually figured out how to watch and learn from someone who knew how it works.

Well yeah, a large part of their success recently is they just finally grew up into functioning adults. They were both always talented coaches, but were lacking some in the maturity department. Of course, with Sark that's alcoholism. With Lane, I don't think he was given a fair shake at Tennessee, though that was partially his own doing. He was actually quite successful at FAU before moving to Ole Miss.

if it's a crap shoot, we should just hire the cheapest clowns available.. pick the guy with the best jokes and roll those dice.

Lincoln Riley had success, only to fail at USC.

Maybe it's all about USC

Dude has one year. The contract and the reality differ.

Some people learn from mistakes and just get better. That’s another reason to have patience with your current HC. Let them make adjustments. There’s a reason why pro sports franchises that continually fire coaches never win.

Saban fired Kiffin before the bowl game and promoted Sark. Many players and coaches have worked for or played for great coaches like Saban, Jimmy Johnson, Osborne, Switzer etc. not all of them learned to be great head coaches. The great coaches in any sport have something different than the rest. Most of what they have/ had is not transferable.

All great points! I will add a Great coordinator knows how to connect with and motivate kids in their late teens and early twenties.

I mostly agree. Nothing you said contradicts what I said.
