DB: Net gain 81 tackles

So now the question is, which roster, if any, improved via the transfer portal and which schools did not improve their roster?

Not improve: Purdue, Wisconsin, Northwestern. For Purdue, they didn't bring in anyone that would make a difference. Northwestern lost too much at the RB spot and lost a good defender. instead of fixing those losses, they just added a QB that got benched and a WR. Wisconsin must think they are too good for the transfer portal but overall they took the biggest roster hit in the division since they lost a bunch of production with no gains and yes they had room for incoming transfers and actually got beat out for transfers.

Gained:
Minnesota - they brought in better talent in their front 7 on defense.
Nebraska - improved defensive roster, neutralized pass receiving production, gained yards and TDs, lost the QB depth, but gained in running back production.
Iowa - when you factor in the net loss or net gained, Iowa improved, albite just a safety so the impact isn't going to factor into the LOS or their rushing attack.

Me - Slight net gain because I nothing to do today and this observation improved my transfer knowledge

You are counting numbers put up in FCS play as having a 1:1 conversion to power 5 football?

I like this! For Purdue, they got a LB that was a redshirt freshman at auburn last year and a former top 100 redshirt freshman from South Carolina. The big addition is a starting DT coming back. Purdue basically returns everyone.

Never make these judgments until you see a kid play. I’ve heard things about transfers in the past that didn’t come to fruition. Hopefully the RB will be very good. We won’t know that until he runs the ball a game or two at Neb. Through many years I’ve learned to pump the brakes on the hype until we can see it in the field. Will the transfer RB be better than a healthy Mills in year one in Lincoln? I personally doubt it. But I hope that’s the case and would like for that to happen. The WR? He’s not a Duck/slot guy but sounds like he will provide talent to the roster. But he won’t replace Wandale...because they play different positions. The LB? He played in a different division/class of College FB. Let’s see what he can do in a Power 5 situation.

Do this same thread after 2021 and see what the results are.

Whaaaat? You don't believe in the transitivity of skills to different divisions and positions?

Purdue will suck just like they usually do.

How did Nebraska gain? Your argument is based on FCS stats.

If Hilinski starts and plays well for the cats they are the clear winners.

They lost more than anyone to the portal. How can they possibly be the clear winners?

They lost more than anyone to the portal. How can they possibly be the clear winners?

Because the QB is the most important position on the field.

With the exception of Leota and McGowan (transferred to Auburn and Georgia Tech) none of the transfers were projected starters. The Cats will also be getting their best dlineman from 2019 back (opted out in 2020) to replace Leota and the Kansas WR transfer to replace McGowan.

Bowser and Anderson were passed over at RB by Porter and Hull by the end of the year. The Cats also have a four star early enrollee coming in.

Players like Fisher, Newsome, Gallagher, Pace, Lees, RCB, and Ramsey will be the difficult ones to replace.

Is Neal coming back?
No. Hes going pro. That's why it was big watts was coming back. Otherwise, both DT's would have been new. Well. Kind of. The one that will likely start started in Neal's place two years ago. Purdue is finally getting age and depth. And actually has defensive coaches now. Going to be fun!

Another thing we lost is 6 interception and multiple fumbles.

Very difficult to measure talent out vs talent in, but just pure numbers it seems we have lost more scholarship players than we have added. If there is a weakness and someone available in the portal to address that weakness I don't understand why we are not adding more transfers in to at least stay even in the scholarship player count.

We are only allowed 2 more players in this class, weather transfers or recruits.
