Harbaugh's advice to football recruits: play soccer

Lots of obvious reasons.

I will say the one of the biggest advantages is that it is a free flow game where the players make the decisions as the coach can provide minimal help during the game. So the players must be the thinkers.

I don't know about that. Because of the free flow the game might require an overall understanding of the game, but to me it ends up being more instinctive and more individual. There is no sport that requires more mental preparation than football.

Pretty sure most, if not all, sports require a similar amount of mental preparation. Tennis and golf seem to me a few examples of sports where if you don't have the proper mental focus you can be the most talented out there but not win a thing.

That is basically the point I am making. Soccer helps develop their mental abilities while in the football off season thus making it a good cross training sport.
Secondly, soccer is anything but "individual" if you are doing it right.

I never gave soccer much credit growing up, but then I went overseas and played it with my students everyday while in the Peace Corps. That being said I grew to respect the sport....

If anyone should advocate their recruits playing soccer in the offseason it should be Tim Miles. Back door cuts, give and go, moving without the ball, and defensive positioning are all aspects of soccer that translate to the hardwood courts.
