It is too easy to discount a win against a hapless opponent like Illinois. We gave up one fumble and no INT's. Playing error free should be a goal for every game and is a desirable winning habit. This game was a nice step in the right direction in terms of execution.
It's good to get a win.
While I'm watching the game, I'm thinking that we are throwing a lot. I thought there would be a good chance we would come out a little more conservative against Illinois and run the ball more in the beginning to let TLee settle into the game. To say it's been a rough early season for TLee is an understatement. So, I decided to go look at the numbers. I'll share them if anyone cares to look (I don't have some secret hidden agenda for any of you prone to paranoia). I only looked at our first three series, all resulting in TD's. Our next two series were each a respective failure in the passing aspect and rushing aspect, more or less a wash for the airitout vs runtheball crowds.
Looks like the staff is staying with a "trial by fire" approach for TLee, and sticking with a pass dominant offense. Out of these first 26 plays, TLee completed 11 of 14 passes, nearing an 80% completion rate. I just wonder how sustainable (and to what degree) this type of result is.
