This seems odd. He started half the year at OT last year and we are pretty deep at DT.

Just saw the teaser on KETV, and was wondering which lineman was switching sides. Good luck to him. He might be needed there next year as there's noise Collins could be a high draft choice next year if he chooses to come out.

Price is a senior

I believe he's a Sr.

Interesting move so late in the process. Maybe trying to keep red shirts for the Davis twins?

I liked Price on the second line last year. I thought he did pretty well. Guard depth must be good.

Being a senior makes the move more perplexing.

He would almost have to be in the 2 deep for it to make sense. Right? I can't imagine moving him from a position where he is a decent back up to a position where he sits on the bench.

I joked in another thread about Kevin Williams in another thread. Collins was interviewed on BIG Network yesterday. Could the suspended D starter be VV? Is a one game suspension a reason to move a Sr? Guess we will find out.

Even as a senior; if the team needs you - and just maybe it gives you an outside chance at the NFL, or more size/position appropriate.

Probably unlikely, but any remote chance we give Kevin Maurice a late redshirt year? If Price can be solid as a backup NT, we might not need Maurice this year but we could lose 2-3 of our top 3 tackles after this season.

Price is 310 pounds, and we don't have a lot of D-tackles at 300+. Valentine, Collins (McMullen, hopefully not for long...), nobody else is listed above 280. Maybe situationally Banker wants another big body for the line?

Historically, guys that move from OL to DL late in their career rarely do much. Broderick Nickens was the last guy to do it that I remember. Went from an occasional late game sub at OG as a junior to never seeing the field at DT despite his size.

Either Banker wants some size, or Price has been passed up by a lot of guys on the OL. Or both.

I defended Maurice when Bo offered him. Big DT bodies are hard to find and you often don't really know how they'll turn out so its hard to criticize taking a kid like him. It normally takes at least 2 years for a kid to get physically ready to play at a high D-1 level. He has time to develop yet but it would seem that Price will possibly supplant him on the depth chart. I will note that when I've listened to interviews about the D-line, they haven't exactly raved about Maurice. That could change.

Im not sure how everyone missed the good news here.

Givens Price was a very substandard offensive tackle. He's a better fit at guard because he's a physical grader type. But the young guards dictated his future. This move is due to 3 things:

1. Nick Gates is very close to unseating Sterup at Right Tackle. Sterup, who struggled in pass coverage, is still a step up from Price.

2. The coaches thought they could then move Price behind Chongo. But Farmer has passed Price as the primary backup to Chongo.

3. Price would've also been behind Utter and Foster at LG.

4. Knevel is clearly the #2 LT behind Lewis. Finnin is a tackle and a better pass blocker than Price.

Givens Price is a senior with a lot of experience. He's also a great student and has been a tremendous off the field influence for the program. He's big, physical, and has some nastiness. The coaches are throwing him buy giving him the chance to go muck up the middle for 8 to 10 snaps per game. It also might add some flexibility on early downs to move Maliek outside and maintain a massive Dline presence vs short yardage or goal line.

But this a bigger deal for the Offensive line. Guys like Price have been passed up by younger and more talented players. That's a great sign for this program.

Price is a very young senior. He skipped some grades as a youngster. He may not be the greatest, but i always thought that 1 to 2 year gap hurt him developmentally

Call it a hunch, I'm expecting quite a bit of substitution and they need bodies to rotate. So, I could see Givens-Price making a contribution at DT.

Talent > seniority
Put a player where he can help the team.

Maybe VV's injuries are a bit worse than being made public right now. Need another DT to take up some snaps.

I had the same thought but was still surprised. Givens Price played a bunch and gave us experienced depth. The flip side is obviously a wide body for short yardage situations is a great thing to have. Really really like what Riley seems to be doing with personnel decisions.

In previous years under Bo, the D line looked absolutely gassed as the game progressed. We need depth here.

That was my first thought. We are supposed be going to an ATTACKING D/swarming, not patty-cake and plug holes. I don't remember seeing anything that didn't include the DT's in this mix. I don't see us being effective without rotating players. Hands on hips and gasping for air like fish out of water isn't going to get it done.

This; if you have a second teamer developed too 90% of a first teamer, imo he out performs a tired first teamer. The first teamer comes back rested and excited; we hammer the other team down.

Just how big has Givens Price gotten? Dude's huge!
