gamer nerds, need some help

My son has been using my old xbox 360 I got way back when guitar hero was popular. I have not played games in years. We have an exernal hard drive, and it is difficult for him to get new games to work on it. I think I read where xbox one is not "backwards compatible". We have talked about getting him a better console since before last Christmas. Is that pretty much the only route? I on't mind getting him copies of the games he wants going forward. Is backwards compatibility still impossible on the Microsoft consoles?

They're actually going to be adding backwards compatibility to the Xbox One.

I'm not sure as I'm not a console gamer. I don't think you can play Xbox One games on the Xbox 360 console. However, it seems that you can play Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One console starting in November. See this link for more info: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/backward-compatibility
