Gameplan for Illinois....

We currently are slated to have three receivers OV Saturday including a 4* and a 5*. I got the idea Riley wasn't pleased with the play selection for the Fresno game, when we also had WRs visiting, including a 4* as I recall. Between wanting to showcase some passing and Dr. Route being on the sideline, I suspect NU may pass a fair amount.

I hope that, for the first time this year, we come out on offense with all guns blazing and wipe Illinois all over the field, putting them out of the game by the end of the first half. I do NOT think we are going to come out super vanilla and just run and run.

This team and staff remember last year and that you can't take any game for granted. Last week is a case in point. We should have won by much more but our mistakes kept it close. And if Walker hangs on to his sure thing pic 6, it would have been 24-20 with lots of time.

No way, from here on out, that we just "pound the rock" endlessly. Running the ball is great and necessary. But my goodness, we have the best receiving core in the conference and a QB who is underrated as a passer. We need to use those weapons.

Offensively we are going to be able to do what ever the hell we want to do. I Imagine you will see a pretty evenly called game from DL.

Western Michigan out-rushed Illinois 287-3. Yes, 287-3. Western Michigan had 5.3 yards/carry. They also went 9/13 for 153 yards in the passing game.

I bet we run the ball this week.....
Of course; but imo look for receivers being involved in the run game - pretty cool if your a receiver to see how you can be showcased running the ball also. I do agree with others; that we will light it up some; especially early with deeper routes/ also cool with recruits. GBR

I think they are #4 in the nation in sacks. That one DL is a Top 10 pick

Don't know about their run D, but statistically their Pass rush is good.

But isn't that part of the Tampa 2 D?

for the 1st time in a while it feels like we can line up and run at people and eventually wear them down. Another couple years and we'll be set in that respect. Just do what we have been and don't go throwing 57 times of whatever we did last year in this game.

Did Riley say anthing about the Fresno game or is that speculation? I can't believe he would get involved with a game plan just to impress some potential incoming players. That would be the most stupid thing I ever heard.

I thought I remember him saying something about a little more passing after that game.

All Riley needs to do is use the run game as a sales pitch. He need these guys to be part of the high flying offense he's headed towards.

Lunt does well vs non-Power 5 teams and struggles vs better competition but he is still more than capable.

This is the type of a game where a quick lead for NU should make life really easy...letting the Illini stick around will create problems.

I am too lazy to go back and look for the exact quote, but Riley was asked specifically about the lack of passing and he said something like, "Yeah, that was a surprise, we want to be a little more balanced going forward." It struck me as an Osborne-type of comment where he said a lot, by not saying too much, which is admittedly speculation on my part. Langsdorf was then asked about it and said something sheepish (IMHO) about being in a groove with the run game.

As far as the game plan, I truly believe Wilbon was given some packages so he could get a chance in front of the many family, friends and importantly, former coaches who were in attendance Saturday. The fact they worked was gravy. I believe Langsdorf in that case adjusted the plan for some moral boosting and maybe some goodwill with Chicago area coaches. That is just a guess on my part, but if so, I don't think that was a stupid move.

I would hope that Wilbon was on the field because he made an impact in our little 3 back rotation during that game. He helped make it work..

Posters seem to be taking this game for granted. HCMR isn't I'll bet. Need to not turn the ball over (#1 priority). Everything depends on not turning ball over.

I think I replied to this statement before but I can't even fathom taking your #4 guy and playing him just because he is at home and you want to impress the local coaches. The way NW was playing dictated his abilities. They were bringing guys downhill and from all sides and all we needed was an extra quick step to get to the outside and there was plenty of daylight. Early on they were stacking us up pretty good with a five man front and lots of stems and stunts. It was a matter of time before Langs outguessed them and then it is off to the races. If one were to buy the "good will" theory then that creates a whole entire dynamic each week with your team. Does he start all of the Nebraska kids in Lincoln?

It wasn't so much the fact that they had some good WR recruits at the game. He was just mad that the QB and receivers were not on the same page and it kind of scrapped the game plan. Tommy had some issues leading up to the game, but the WR were to blame also as they had issues getting into the correct formations, running the right routes and running good routes. I don't know if KW not being on the sidelines had anything to do with it or if they just had a bad game or what. That's what pissed Riley off the most.

There are a lot of things I can't even fathom that turn out to be true. Today's example for instance is the United States giving up control of the Internet.

Stewart played Wilbon because he was pissed off at Newby for that fumble at the goal line. I also get the sense Tre Bryant has lost some PT because he's fumbled 3 times this year. Stewart is still pissed off about it.

This staff preaches accountability. Kudos to Wilbon for taking advantage of the opportunity.

This is all good news to me; as long as things are consistent. It makes sense that we can't coddle and potentially lose games for it.,,,,,, IMO - Newby has improved a lot this year; But Devine earned his way, and his getting the majority of snaps vs UCLA was the way and possibly a game changer. Tre is young and has to work it out. Wilbon, in many opinions here, and shown is some spring game action, is a unique talent.
Wilson had some issues and seems to have weathered them and stayed the course; he brought some elusive moves and unique success in the NW game; when imo it was critical - he should be seeing the field now. If the coaches had a plan to get him some caries or action where they could because he was from Chicago; FANTASTIC, THOUGHTFUL AND COACHES FULL OF CLASS AND HUMANITY - OH, and they
know he is talented and its pretty safe to flash him for a few - the FACT, that he ran with it and excelled; tells me he earned extra carries, because the coaches rolled with it - FANTASTIC, it appears to me he deserves to be in that top three, and could take more carries from Newby, who also has improved ( my main complaint before is he seemed to get the least yac, this is difference maker if he falls back to last year). I
believe it was Devine who said preseason; " as a group, all of the top rb's are better than any one of us was last year "; at this early point, his statement seems pretty accurate - hurrah for our coaches!!!

You mean Coach Davis?

Pardon my ignorance Cornicator, but isn't Davis our running backs coach, not Stewart? I am confused I guess.

Simple game plan if you want a guaranteed victory, don't get lost on the way to the stadium. Illini are horrible.
