Game of the Century 2:1987 Oklahoma

Taylor should have kept his mouth shut. Blessing in disguise. Nobody was going to beat that Miami team unless FSU(Led Miami 19-3 before choking) got to play them again. Miami was loaded.

I drove up for that game. Took my best friend (named Texas) to watch the Nebraska/OU game in '87 and '89. Had a blast. Went to some sorority party the night before the game. Still have the poster from the shindig. Back when I wore contacts. That team had greatness written all over that and then Sooner Magic. I hate OU. I am so mad that our series ended. It was all OU's fault. They were getting whipped by us and then went and voted with UT just to take us down a notch. Eff that crap. We got them back in '89. See my sig pic.

That was a physical deep Husker team that got beat up by OU. They should have beaten FSU but Knox fumbled on a td that would have put that game away.

nightmare game

Jamelle Holieway was injured earlier in the month

Broderick Thomas also ran his mouth all week - and the defense gave up 400+ yards rushing with a back up freshman QB running the offense

Taylor was a whopping 6 of 18 for 58 yards and 3 ints

OU fumbled the ball 8 times (losing 3) and still kicked our ass

We tore them apart in 1989 ... but to be honest tearing down the goalposts after beating what was going to be an unranked 4 loss Oklahoma team was pretty weak ... I guess just a buildup of emotions after so many beatings

I was at the game too. OU's offensive line got a four yard push on our defense every play. What made it worse was we scored first and Keith Jones looked like he was going to have a big game. Then... Thud.

I don't think so. I thought it was saying "We have finally done it and now this is the norm." We started pounding OU from then on. It was beautiful. I don't care that they tore down the goal posts. I think the passion was alive after all the frustrations of beating anyone but OU. Glad we stuck with Tom. I remember howling for Skow. I remember the We-backs. Some great times.

I'm proud to be a Husker.

I remember playing video games with Keith End Zone Jones in the dorms. Cool guy. I may have played some pool with him. Been a while.

I get it and understand. But that wasn't the Oklahoma program that was our nemesis in 1989. Switzer was gone - Gibbs was the coach and they were on sanctions. Were they even ranked when we played them in 1989 .... the goalposts were tore down after we beat an unranked crippled former power program

Creepy silence after the game. People just shuffled out , head down and went home.

I agree one of the most talented teams TO had that just fell flat on their faces. I was beyond hot after that game. The Fiesta Bowl was the icing on the cake..

Marc Munford outplayed the Boz and was the best MLB on the field that day! Only 2 Husker games ever ripped my Spirit away; OU in 87 & FSU in NC game for 94 season.

What sucked is we had OU at home in 86 and 87. We peed the 86 game away, and as mentioned above Keith Jones scored on the first drive, and absolutely nothing after that. Too many players ran their mouths in the week leading up.

At least we knocked them off in 88 in Switzer's last regular season game and in Norman, in one of the hardest hitting games I remember growing up.

OU was a fumbling machine when they ran the old wishbone offense. I bet they would average 4 or 5 fumbles a game. They were good at recovering there own fumbles. It was the toughest offense Nebraska ever faced

It is what it is. I don't ever have to be happy with it. I have come to peace with it though. I just hate OU. :p

I believe you're off by a year bud. Happens to me all the time anymore it seems.

Forch and Etienne were the starting LB that day. Boz was gone

OU had four seniors on that OL. They were powerful.

Oklahoma had 3 players over 100 yards rushing and rushed for 419 as a team. Our front 7 was destroyed that day. Our offense barely had a pulse against the Sooner defense. :(

I remember this game well. Ugh. I don't know if this was one of TO's more talented teams. It was his typical 80's mix of blue chippers, hard-nosed Nebraska kids, and walk-ons. Our D-Line featured Neil Smith and Broderick Thomas on one side and two walk-ons, Tim Rother and Jeff Jamrog, on the other side. I swear OU ran 75% of their plays at Rother and Jamrog, and they just couldn't hold up. Jamrog got obliterated by Keith Jackson on nearly every play.

I remember feeling so confident prior to the game. When my brother and I got to the stadium, I saw OU's linemen and thought, "Holy crap, those guys are huge. In fact, they're bigger than our guys." That was not something you saw very often.

Just did a quick search and couldn't find a badass NU one. So don't hate me ;). GBR

I remember this game well-but actually I remember the pregame hype more than the game. In an era when the only college football news came from the local media and ESPN(but not to the extent that they cover college football now), it was an incredibly hyped game-and overhyped, as it turned out.

Yeah defense had some holes, cost TO national titles if you ask me.

I still can't believe the Big 12 took this rivalry away from N. IMO this had a lot to do with Nebraska's decline.

OU was getting their ass wupped by NU on a yearly basis. They could have kept the rivalry going and chose not to. The line was that we could meet in the B12 CCG. That move killed the rivalry. Our Big 8 brethren voted with UT to weaken NU. Yes, I'm still bitter about it after all these years. So, happy we moved to the B1G.

In the 90s yes but once the 2000s came around things evened out and Stoops started to take control the final four games. Oklahoma seems to always recruit at a fairly high level especially now.

When the decision to make those schedules (and hence preserve the rivalry) NU was dominating OU on a yearly basis. The B12 (and OU) dropped the rivalry when the B12 was formed. That was not in 2000.

Seems like OU survived and in fact have thrived since the rivalry ended while our program has shriveled. Was Neb more dependent on this rivalry than OU?

Well, to be fair, we had Solich. How he drove that into the ground... I realize there were a lot of factors. At the top was our former conference brothers stabbing us in the back. OU has UT. OU needed UT for the Texas recruiting. We only had OU. I'd say it was a better rivalry series as the game almost always meant more. Still miss that annual game.

you mean handing over a program who had just won 3 of the last 4 national titles to the running backs coach wasn't a good idea?

I wonder when Saban retires if Alabama will hand the keys to their running backs or tight ends coach?

It's not easy to field a complete team especially this day and age. Most programs lack talent somewhere. FSU does not even have a great talent at QB at the moment for example. Who does Bama have?

I was a UNL sophomore for that game. In those days students could get pretty good seats if they applied early enough. I was in East stadium, about 20 rows up at the 20 year line. My enduring memory of that game was the cheerleaders handed out pom-poms that were paper strips glued onto wooden sticks. Dude in front of me was highly intoxicated, and by end of the game was just yelling "Go Big Red, g**dammit!" and waving his wooden stick because all the paper had fallen off. Bad game, good times. o_O
