FWIW - How large is the Nebraska fanbase?

Here's another study claiming to estimate the size of fanbases in the B1G. Take it for what it's worth, I'm sure there are multiple different methodologies to estimate those numbers. But this study claims Nebraska is No. 6 in terms of fanbase size in the B1G. And of course, size doesn't account for the intensity of "passion".

Nebraska is the least populous state in the Big ten with Iowa being the next largest
The population is closer in size to North Dakota than Iowa

the population of border states has to be the smallest by far of any big ten school

previous talk of the 300 or 500 mile radius is ridiculous
you better be able to recruit high level prospects nation wide

If this study was taken during Nebraska's championship years Nebraska would be near or at the top. Let's face it, Nebraska has lost a lot of bandwagon fans who only root for champions or older fans who have passed on. I'm not saying this study isn't correct but it is sad that Michigan State and Wisconsin have even surpassed Nebraska. This study should be posted on Trev Alberts door if it hasn't already.

Do not buy that Michigan State has a larger fan base. Wisconsin's fan base is suspect as well as they are an also ran to the Packers.

I think the demographics rather than the absolute size of the fan base would be interesting

for the future of the program I hope the fan base in the 10-20 year old demographic is as representative as the 40 and older group

few, if any, recruits were even alive the last time the program was relevant - thankfully their parents and grandparents may be able to tell them

I don't know about Wisconsin but I live in Michigan and I guarantee you there are a lot of Michigan State fans here. You have to remember all the B1G schools except Northwestern have far larger enrollments (ie., alumni) than Nebraska. But I do think the Nebraska fanbase is the most passionate in the B1G.

This issue is probably becoming bigger than many realize. Realistically, we're dipping into a second generation of NU fans passing on since we were last relevant on the national scene. These are people whose fandom is listed in their obituary. Having lived outside Nebraska for a long time, its difficult for me to gauge the level of interest NE kids have, but hard to believe its anywhere close to the generations they are backfilling for. My kids couldn't give a s#%t about NU football, despite my passion for it. Winning will undoubtedly help the interest, but I don't see it being the same.

Being behind the big three in the East is understandable and somewhat expected. Being behind Wiscy and Sparty on the other hand is rather pathetic. If and when we start winning again we should move up to at least 4th.

Part of that is just go look at the size of these schools. Nebraska is on the smaller end of University size.
