Per Footballscoop, Iowa continues to shell out the big bucks. Now not only for Ferentz and his assistant coaches but also for strength coach Doyle, who has been with the Hawkeyes and Ferentz for over two decades now. He will become the highest paid strength coach in college football, followed closely by Ohio State’s Mickey Marotti ($735k), Tennessee’s Craig Fitzgerald ($625k), and Clemson’s Joey Batson ($600k). No doubt Iowa is finding ways to spend that B1G money.

Iowa = Northwestern...better than they should be every few years, all things considered. I get this contract for their S&C guy.

Doyle is worth it based on his results. He has been the biggest reason for a lot of these 2 and 3 star kids playing in the NFL.

Doyle is worth every penny. Hell, even PJ Fleck called him the best strength coach in America. (Maybe even elite). Iowa is a developmental program, they would be the first to tell you that. While most think player development focuses on what occurs on the practice field, that is minimal compared to the development in the weight room, linear and lateral speed training, nutrition, sleep, leadership development, etc. That is all Doyle and why Iowa can take multi sport, Midwest kids and turn them into NFL players. A lot of times more successful at that then winning games.

The reason why Iowa has had so much recent success vs Nebraska has little to do with scheme or recruiting but rather player development (strength staff). It’s still early, but Duval appears to be closing that gap!

Is anyone else totally shocked that there can be such a difference in SC programs.

Assuming the equipment is all the same, which I would imagine for the most part it is, how can one SC coach be good and another be bad?

Everyone is benching, everyone is power cleaning, everyone is squatting...I mean everyone is doing the same lifts

Does one coach yell more motivating things? Does one coach find cooler T-shirts to hand out? Does one coach have a better playlist?

I don't get it. Like I said, assuming the equipment is the same and assuming they make the players lift...how can it be different?

Maybe it has to do with the training table. Riley was a west coast guy. Maybe they got them on a vegan diet and they turned into unmotivated zombies.

Equipment could be the same but there are a million different ways to utilize it. Different programs for different positions/age groups. Sleep patterns and recovery can be a science. I think whoever the S&C guy was under Riley could be classified as being “bad” at his job.

Or maybe Iowa’s training table food has a few PEDs “accidentally” mixed in. Just kidding of course.

Same way you can be kicking ass at work and the guy/gal in the next cubical is making half the sales or bringing less value to the company. Both people have the same degree and access to the same resources.

I don't think that is the same. Lifting is a science. I mean, look at bodybuilders (I know, not exactly the same idea but really close), they all eat the same meals, roughly at the same time of the day, they all do the same lifts, they all sleep the same amount (or try), it is a science and if followed you get the results. Now, the results might not be exactly the same but genetics plays a part, but if two body builders do the same lifts, weight, sleep, meals, the results will be very similar.

Sales, as anyone in sales knows, has been tried to be turned into a science...

Sales managers LOVE to tell their sales force that "if you make 200 calls a day and have 4 hours of talk time you will end up with X amount of sales" but that simply isn't true...If you have been in sales you know there are dudes that make 3-4 calls a day and show up late and leave early and make crazy bank.

Recent success is due to Mike Riley. Sober up!

Actually, I don’t think Phillip is a bad S&C Coach. I’ve heard some say that he has a good program and knows his stuff. The problem was with accountability from the coaching staff. The strength coach can’t make them lift. They have to be motivated by the staff to get their ass into the weight room.

Your last paragraph explained my thinking better than I did. The 200 call per day guy and the 4 call per day guy both have the same opportunities. However, one performs at a higher rate and is more efficient than the other. I agree that leadership of the individual (from top down) plays a key role but other traits are just as important. Regardless, Doyle is making crazy bank. Haha

If blaming everything on Mike Riley makes you sleep better at night, Mr. Cobb, then blame away.
Let’s see how well that D of Iowa does this season vs Nebraska. Too much speed, you will be gassed just like the 4th this past season. Not even worried about you guys this year or beyond.

You make it sound like every program has the exact same routine and philosophy just because they have the same weights laying around. Doyle has hosted many respected programs S&C conditioning coaches over the years. Florida State isn’t sending their coaches to learn what Iowa does if everything was the same. Heck, Fleck just hired a new S&C coach based on a recommendation from Doyle.

No, that is my point. That the other SC coaches go learn from each other so the ideas are all pretty much the same or very similar. It isn't like FSU is having dudes bench press from a hammock while wearing a G-string and watching porn to stimulate testosterone.

As far as routines there is really only so much you can manipulate that...heavy and low reps...lighter and more reps...there is only so much wiggle room.

You mean, the speed Nebraska will have on offense that is similar to what Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State have had for years?

I’m not even on this board as an “Iowa fan” but rather to add my thoughts to what is, for the most part, a civil and thoughtful discussion. I am pry one of the few people who support both Iowa and Nebraska and you can throw in Iowa State as well. My only frustration with any board is the backhanded comments like “sober up” that add no context or no position to support.

Look we don’t need to be preached about strength and conditioning..At one time we were the leaders and innovators in College Football that was one of the reasons Nebraska had the best record in the country for decades..

Iowa and Wisconsin have had stronger linemen on both sides of the ball since we joined the B1G 10 and Frost knows getting back to where we once were it starts with strength and conditioning...

We made strides this off season in that direction now we will see where we stand in games against Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ioway...

I already gave you great context, only reason you have had any success vs NU is because of Mike Riley. Enough said. Sober up!!

I disagree. Every program is going to be different. Some are going to use more technology than others. Different eating habits, workouts, recovery.

Good for them.

they have to pay kirky and his coaching team big bucks ... NFL teams are lining up to hire them away

(sarcasm off)

Sure...but the point is this...once teams see something that works they copy it. So by now you would think everyone would be doing the same exact thing (for the most part).

Say I am a fireman...and my squad is trying to put out fires with hairspray and we keep having a really hard time doing our job. Then we see another group of firemen using water to put out fires and they are getting some really good results...well...we are going to copy that.

We know the science of food. We know more sleep is better than less sleep. We know that hydration is important. We know that rest/recovery time is key. I just don't get why some SC coaches seem to suck while others are great.

It must be either they players not lifting as hard as they can...or genetics...or accountability.

I agree with everything you said here. Boyd Epley was ahead of his time! About 8-10 years ago I had the pleasure of sitting in on one of his clinics. I learned a lot about his metabolic circuit program that I believe Duval has reintroduced.

I don't give a rat's A$$ about Iowa, the state or the football program.

Once we restore the order, they may not be too happy. Better get your raise now before you get your place on the totem pole lowered

The University is rolling in money why not spread it around, besides unlike some other programs Iowa is not on the hook and still paying off a half dozen former coaching staffs.

Just saying!

Instead, they are awarding and giving bonuses for 8 win seasons.
