Fridrik Leo Curtis. Big man from Iceland is N!!

Those numbers would be a little more enticing if he played in Europe. Not trying to sell the Icelandic league short, but I’m guessing you probably cut those numbers in half verses NCAA D1 players. But then again, beggars can’t be choosers I guess. 🤷‍♂️ Probably, on paper, one of Fred’s better signees in this class.

Let me get this straight…he is a top 100 player in Iceland.

Yikes! I hope not. I figured it meant he was a top 100 recruit (for NCAA) and was from Iceland. I could probably make the top 100 in Iceland right now. Not even sure Iceland has more than about 500k in population. That has to be top 100 nationally.

Leo Curtis does not sound like an Icelandic name. His parents must have been foreigners and/or immigrants. Iceland actually regulates what their citizens can name their children.

Evidently, Fridrik is a common name in Iceland. It means “peaceful ruler”. I was hoping it meant “protector of the paint”.😎

I feel like we tried this Iceland experiment before.
I can't remember for sure, but I think the last big guy they got from Iceland was not too bad actually. Big, physical kid who did a lot of the dirty work. This guy might be a better all around prospect though.

The last NU player from Iceland was Thor Thorbjarnarson. He was a 6'6" wing player who gave the Huskers some decent minutes. Don't remember any bigs from Iceland, but I could be wrong.

Not expecting much the first year, but that’s okay. Thor wasn’t really D1 ready when he arrived in Lincoln, but he got better the next year. Would be great to see NU develop an athletic big man.

Good catch. I had to look it up. I was thinking of Richard van Poelgeest. He was from the Netherlands which is pretty much the same thing as Iceland. That guy was a 6' 9" bruiser.

He's a stretch big that moves well and can shoot. Will need to get used to the size and athleticism of college bball but otherwise has decent potential.

I just hope he stays more than one year. It is difficult for freshmen to get much playing time these days with the transfer portal and most Power Conference teams being so experienced, unless you are a lottery pick like Flagg.

So I would not expect him to play much next year, especially with Mast and the other foreign big guy on the roster. But hopefully he will be patient and work on developing so that he can take over a starting role as a sophomore.

I'd personally love to see the Huskers add a guy that is 6-10''-7' and 285lbs. Sometimes in Big 10 play I feel like that is a guy we are missing. Someone like a Braxton Meah or Derek Walker but more athletic and skilled. Defend and rebound. Run the floor, put backs and offensive rebounds. I just feel like our bigs will get dominated in a physical game. They are all "stretch" players for the most part. I will say Fred seems to like his guys more versatile and be threats from the outside.

That would be nice, but lately it's been stretch players that can't shoot. Nebraska was outside of the top 200 teams in 3 point % last year, and outside of the top 100 in 2 point %.
