1. Michigan Wolverines
The Wolverines' winged helmet says college football every it as much as cheerleaders, bands and tailgating. Most every football fan can identify the Michigan uniform, and the maize and blue will never go out of style.
2. UCLA Bruins
In recent years, the Bruins have taken some bold steps with alternates, but that did not mess up the great powder blue and gold base scheme. The Bruins simply exude California cool.
3. Maryland Terrapins
When the owner of an apparel company (Under Armour) is a former special teams captain at your school, you get a lot of uniforms. Love them or hate them, the state flag-driven Maryland uniforms are extremely cool -- although we did nearly have to exclude them under the Oregon abuse-of-alternates provision.
4. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The literal gold standard of uniforms. The Golden Domers have perhaps the most recognizable helmets in all of college football, with a shine made possible by the inclusion of real gold flake paint. Notre Dame is in the first year of its deal with Under Armour, but its base uniform style transcends changes in manufacturers.
5. Texas Longhorns
In the 1960s, the Longhorns debuted the helmet decal that is synonymous with Texas football. Plus, the burnt orange jersey is as classic as it gets.
6. Florida State Seminoles
The tomahawk on the sides of the Seminoles' helmet is one of the coolest things going in college football. In 2000, a tribal print along the sleeves and neckline made its debut as the perfect accent. As if the tomahawk helmet stickers weren't enough.
7. Ohio State Buckeyes
Scarlet and gray is one of the sport's iconic color schemes, but it's the Buckeye helmet stickers legendary coach Woody Hayes introduced back in 1968 that puts this outfit over the top.
8. Alabama Crimson Tide
It's been chic for even traditional powers to spice up their uniforms, but Alabama's have remained largely the same since the days of Bear Bryant. The clean and classic look is a staple of the Nick Saban-led team, and who doesn't love the old-school numbers on the sides of the helmets?
9. USC Trojans
Not much has changed with these uniforms since the days of Marcus Allen running wild. There is good reason for that, as the Trojans have a great look that doesn't need tweaking. Somehow, the cardinal and gold never looks out of step with the times.
10. Nebraska Cornhuskers
The block "N" on the side of the helmets is timeless, but subtle updates to the Cornhuskers' look over the years have kept it current and fresh. Adidas may be doing its best to water things down with alternates, but the standard uniforms are sharp.
11. Penn State Nittany Lions
Call them plain or call them classic -- we prefer the latter -- the team from Happy Valley should never don an alternate.
12. Texas A&M Aggies
Texas A&M has long had a great football tradition, but this program was made cool by coach Kevin Sumlin after a move to the SEC. This is one of Adidas' top schools, and the Aggies get the uniform attention that comes along with that when it comes to alternates. Still, it's the throwback stripes-on-the-shoulders base look that we're ranking here, and it couldn't be better.
13. Washington Huskies
Purple and gold were the colors of royalty once upon a time, and the Huskies were considered that in college football from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Times have changed on the field, but the Huskies' unique look remains one of the best around.
14. LSU Tigers
Common sense took over in the 1990s, when the NCAA again let LSU wear its white jerseys at home -- a tradition that had run from 1958 to 1982, when the NCAA initially stepped in. When opposing teams came to Death Valley, they know they are in for a tough game against a team that usually looks better than they do.
15. Boise State Broncos
The bright blue and orange color scheme seems like it'd be too much at first glance, but it grows on you in a way the Broncos' blue field probably never will. The new-look helmet came aboard in 2011, the same year the team started a deal with Nike.
16. Navy Midshipmen
Navy wore a lot of special uniforms from previous apparel maker Nike, but it made the switch to Under Armour in 2014. The Navy Blue (naturally) and gold look is still sleek and timeless.
17. Tennessee Volunteers
Whenever your main color is named after your school, you know your uniforms are on the right track. Tennessee Orange just works without anything other than white as an accent, and the Volunteer "T" on the helmets is another classic look.
18. Florida Gators
Since 1979, the Gators have donned the cursive "Gators" on the sides of their helmets. There have been small tweaks since the 1990s, but not much has changed for one of Nike's flagship SEC schools.
19. Army Black Knights
Black and gold uniforms are a staple of the Black Knights. Nike has certainly done well by them over the years. Even a break from tradition in 2008 that added black numbers to the helmets proved to be a hit.
20. San Diego State Aztecs
The Aztecs' uniforms are sneaky good, with the details really making them pop. The helmets featuring the Aztec calendar are a nice nod to history.
21. Georgia Bulldogs
The Bulldogs are one of many schools with red in the color scheme, but that look has served them well over the years and is accented nicely by the gray and black. They have had disastrous results with alternate jerseys, and it's a sore subject for UGA fans. No need to worry, though, since UGA has a classy base look. And extra points for the dog bone helmet stickers.
22. Arizona State Sun Devils
For three decades, Sparky the Sun Devil was the logo on the sides of the ASU helmets -- until 2011, when Nike revamped the look. ASU is an Adidas school now, but the Sun Devils' look matches the Arizona climate: It's very hot.
23. North Carolina Tar Heels
The baby (Carolina) blue color scheme has made UNC's basketball uniforms iconic, but it works on the football field, too.
24. TCU Horned Frogs
You might not think about TCU right away when listing the top uniforms, but it somehow makes purple -- with a new frog-print pattern -- look just right.
25. Michigan State Spartans
It's not the iconic look of the other school in Michigan on this list, but it's still noteworthy. The Spartans haven't changed things up much over the years, but the Nike school has a look that stands the test of time.
