Basketball Former Husker to represent Australia National Team

Former Nebraska forward Jack McVeigh will represent Australia during pool play of the FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifying tournament later this month. McVeigh, a native of Cabarita Beach, New South Wales, Australia, has been named to the country's Senior National Team as it prepares for the second round of the FIBA Asia-Oceania group stage later this month.

Australia went 3-0 in the first round to advance to the second round, where it will face off with China twice (June 30 and July 3) and Japan (July 1) for the right to play in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup which begins Aug. 25, 2023.

McVeigh will be looking to help the Australian Boomers advance to the biggest stage of the tournament while making his second appearance with the team and his first since 2019. The 6-foot-8 forward has played professionally in Australia following his college career, highlighted by his average of 12.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game during the 2021-22 season spent playing for the Tasmania Jackjumpers in the National Basketball League.

McVeigh spent three seasons with the Huskers from 2016-18, averaging 5.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game while making 78 appearances, which included 15 starts. playing in 78 games and tallying 15 starts. McVeigh was one of the top international players in his class when he signed with the Huskers as part of their 2015 class. He played in all 34 games as a true freshman and averaged one made 3-pointer per game. At the time, McVeigh's 34 made 3-point shots was ranked fifth on the Huskers' all-time freshman record for made 3-pointers in a single season. He then had his best season as a Husker during a sophomore campaign in which he averaged 7.5 points per game across 30 games, including 11 starts.
