Florida Atlantic hires Lane Kiffin

That CAN'T have been where he was seeing himself landing after his run as OC at Bama. Too many other more traditional programs felt too much risk involved with bringing in a Kiffin. I guess he reaped what he sowed.

Honestly, this move surprises me. LSU OC would be a step up IMO, or 'Bama for that matter. Great hire for them, but a weird move for Lane. If he doesn't succeed there, he's finished as a HC. I would have thought he'd hold out for one more year and land a better gig.

I think Lane must have seen this as a chance to prove he can be the head man and rehab his image. Not sure being OC under Saban proves you can call the shots for a entire organization. Not a bad choice really, fertile recruiting ground and not a ton of pressure to win right away. If he fails he can always go back to an OC job somewhere big time.

Edit: just saw the 2020 probation thing. Never mind everything I said above.

I don't think he was going to get a power 5 job as a head coach without first having success at a FCS school.

He did an ok job at Tennessee. In reality he was there 1 year. Improved the team's record by 2 games and left for the "dream job"

First 2 seasons at USC were decent, but he struggled in year 3 and into year 4.

I think having his dad around at every stop was a bit much, especially when his teams were struggling on defense.

I think he will win at FAU. Scary thing is the dude is only 41.

FAU isn't a big name school, but this is the kind of move a head coach who's serious about staying in big time college football makes. If you can prove you can make FAU contend in the C-USA and compete at the FBS level, you will get another shot with a major program down the road.

Just because your immature doesn't mean you have to see how immature you can be. If I was P5 program I would not take a chance on Lane without a lot of stipulations in the contract. Here's his chance to prove that he's finally grown up.

I think the Houston job was his but the president of Houston stepped in and wanted a 7 year buy out clause that would have made it impossible for Kiffin to leave when he may have wanted to.

According to president, Kiffin did not balk at the buyout.

If you read his comments, I think he was more pissed that Kiffin and his agent went to the press before they could. He made comment about the leak, naming him the coach, and said that is "how they do things".

Just to clarify - FAU is not an FCS school, sir. Conference USA. Shitty league, that just cut its league TV payments to member schools by $200k/school, but I agree with you. I think the odds are very good that he'll get kids & win there. I give him at MOST three years there. Probably just two.

Lucky for him, because nobody wants to be the guy who follows a legend like Carl Pelini.

Much better to be the guy who followed the guy who followed Carl.

You have to give it to Carl.
One of my favorite Carl stories is the one when he had a pool party and tried to cut a DeGiorno pizza with a potato peeler.
While wearing Speedos.

Yep. Thanks for picking that up I knew FAU wasn't an FCS. That is what came to my brain instead of group of five.

I was there. It was a Norelco nose trimmer.... while wearing a Bike jock.

Some serious recruiters in Florida.

Richt, Fisher, Davis, Strong & Kiffin. Plus, Florida should sell itself regardless of coach. Smaller schools will rarely get someone over the power 3 in the state but Frost's recruiting just got tougher, especially with Strong 90 miles away.

Excellent point. He can always come home where the recruiting is easy!
