Is it possible to fire the head coach every 2 years until you find a Bear Bryant?
It's seems like recruiting would take a hit. but if you get down to a team of 1 star players.
perhaps then you could better judge the job the coach is doing and then declare him da bear?

has anyone tried the fire the coach every 2 years system, and produced a urban or saben?
and how many times did they have to do it?

I think it's pretty obvious that firing a coach every couple of years is a self defeating exercise unless you're already at the bottom of the barrel and have nowhere to go but up. Maybe you fire guys every 2 years for a couple of cycles, kill your recruiting BUT you bring in a guy who all of the sudden brings along some under the radar recruits who turn out to be difference makers and get you to mediocre. You keep him and he builds you into a winner before he bolts for the next best job. We're not at the bottom of the barrel yet but if we can coaches repeatedly we will get there.

while I agree with this - the same applies to assistants - if you are having to turn over your assistants frequently due to failure to perform you are digging yourself a hole

turnover because of high performance and moving to better opportunities is a different story as presumably the assistants are leaving having improved their area of expertise

First off, it isn't just two years here for Riley. We are now four games into year three. And what has people upset is that there seems to be zero progress in improving this program. In fact it seems to have gotten worse.

Second, we don't fire coaches every two years. Solich got 6, Cally got 4, and Pelini got 7. And if we fire Riley at the end of this year he will have gotten 3. So where are you getting this "every two years" nonsense?

Third, if your general point is that it is bad to keep firing coaches, then all you are doing is stating the obvious. Firing your coach is never a good thing, on many levels. But if your coach is clearly not improving the program, and in fact seems to be making it worse, then firing that coach might be the best course of action for the long term.

Fourth, Riley was never a popular hire from the get go. There was no great enthusiasm generated among the fans by his hiring. So letting him go in order to bring in a fan favorite like Frost might just be what this program needs, despite Riley having been here for a mere three years

I would argue that the defense has seemed to have gotten better this season and the offense has much more potential than when Riley got here, got to put it together.

Why should we care what the vocal ignorant fans think? They barely look past the win/loss column.

When is the last time Nebraska fired a coach after 2 years? Masterson in '47?

I personally think we should re-hire Callahan as he never got a fair shake with him only being here 4 years. So give BC at least 6 more years and if he doesn't work out the 2nd time, then re-hire Riley and give him 8 more years.

Ok. Whatever

The Op is spot on.All it takes is time for a coach to do well at a program. That's it!!! Nothing else. After 5 years, the college football fairy puts a winning playbook under the head coaches pillow.

More time is all that's ever required in life in everything.

In an unhealthy relationship with a boyfriend or girlfriend? Fighting all the time? If you haven't given them at least 5 years of youlife, you need to keep on keeping on. Anyone will tell you, disagreements go completely away when you marry someone and commit your life to that person.

Do you hate your job? How long have you worked there? If the answer is not long or less than 5 years, stop being a little punk B****. Obviously you're the problem and aren't mature enough to appreciate the work environment.

I think people should model their lives off of an ostrich. Ignore any problem that's been in your life for less than 5 years. Time will correct all problems

People live in that kind of fear all the time. Their current situation sucks pond water, but doing something about it brings in the unknown.

The defense has had two really rotten games and I mean horrible and two really good games. The only real P5 team with an offense they gave 400 yards and 42 points in one half and then held them scoreless in the 2nd half - The jury is way way out still on the defense. The offense has clearly gone backwards

I'm sure there were fire Riley guys up here from day 1. I'm sure there were fire Pelini and Callahan guys from day 1.

So what?

You get any large group of people together, you always get that.

You get more than a few hundred together, you'll have some that think the earth is flat.

Stop making sense.
Everyone who is questioning Riley wants a NC by year three, which is unrealistic considering Nebraska can never expect to win one again. Anyone who says we should be beating NIU is obviously a Bo fan and wants Riley to fail. They can't see that it's amazing we can even field a team our players are so shitty. So much progress being made...we need to kick the can down the road more before making a decision on Riley, even if he only wins 4 games this year. Any other coach would only win 1 or 2.
