We talked all offseason about the upgrade in talent along the OL. We also noted that it will take some time for them to gel as a unit and to develop individually. There's going to be some growing pains, mistakes, missed assignments. Pretty sure we saw some here the very first drive.
Would like to grow and learn right along with them. So any of you football guys who can help out on OL play, please explain what happened, what went wrong, what's supposed to happen, etc.
Here's the first one. The key guy is Tanner Farmer.
1 - Note what Tanner is looking at right now. Not sure who his key is but the DL is about to shift.
2 Notice now the DE has moved from over Knevel to almost straight up on Tanner while the WIL has come down. NOW what/who is Tanner supposed to attack and to which direction?
3 - Newby is going in motion and the WIL who came down is now backing away.
4 At the snap looks like we're in pass protection. Setting up nicely for a QB draw. We have the numbers.
5 SAM LB blitzing. I have no idea what Ozigbo is supposed to do at this point. Tommy is already taking off. Here's where I need commentary on Tanner. Wide feet -- good? Not? DE beginning inside move. I get the feeling this is the key image of this sequence.
6 Left side of line looks good. Tanner looked a little confused and didn't move his feet much. DE beat him inside but we still have a lead blocker for Tommy.
7 Ah, but that lead blocker is apparently targeting the MIK so he's going through the hole ahead of Tommy. DE has this thing stuffed. Tanner's feet/legs look really stuck in concrete. Which way is he supposed to move that DE now? What's supposed to happen?
