Fall Camp Update: Day 7

Like AA and Rex before him, Devine seems determined to become "the guy". And we really need one RB to step up and be "the guy".

Notes, Quotes and Video:

Nebraska

“It’s not really a rebuild, it’s more of a teardown. They’re playing one style with players who were recruited for a totally different offense, so it’s just how many steps backward they have to take before they go forward.”

"A lot of their problems started up front. They had some veteran guys, but trying to go from the read-option blocking scheme to the inside zone, it seemed those guys were not really on the same page.”

"Some people were surprised how well they threw it, but they have a solid group of receivers. Tommy Armstrong is kind of a square peg in a round hole in a pro-style offense, but it looked like he bought into what they’re trying to accomplish. He made some questionable decisions in late-game situations, but that may have been their staff trying to get a feel for what he can and can’t do.”

“I think they could be better on offense, but they need another recruiting class or two to get their guys on the field. The problem with that is it’s Nebraska and they just ran the last guy out for winning nine games a year.”

“Defensively, they were really good plugging gaps and making sure you didn’t run the ball, but they did not have a pass rush last year at all, and the biggest difference in their team was that they didn’t create many turnovers.”

“They’ve got some different pieces going in there in the front seven, but you’ve got to have a guy who can get off the edge and pressure the quarterback. I don’t know who that’s going to be.”

“Linebacker is probably the strongest group on their defense.”

Defensive coordinator Mark Banker said the defense is coming along in the back seven — when the Huskers have a better sense of coverage techniques — but they struggled to some degree with playing three different coverages on Wednesday.

Along the defensive line, Banker said, the young players have generally handled assignments and some "movement" blitz plans. In a recent walkthrough, the defensive line only made two mistakes, which was a big improvement from spring, Banker said, when the unit's assignment errors resembled characters from The Three Stooges.

Banker said defensive line coach John Parrella is incorporating some new pass rush techniques that are helping the unit. In a drill recently, Ross Dzuris executed a successful up-and-under move.

Linebacker Michael Rose-Ivey did not practice on Thursday but defensive coordinator Mark Banker said Rose-Ivey had merely tweaked his knee. He's also graduating on Saturday. Also not practicing was nickel Charles Jackson, whom Banker said has a history of soft tissue issues. Tight end Cethan Carter did not practice but, whatever the ailment, it didn't appear serious.

Linebackers coach Trent Bray said the defense had to get faster as a whole, but it was particularly true of Marcus Newby and Dedrick Young. Both have lost weight coming into training camp. Newby is down to 225 pounds.

Cornerback Joshua Kalu said the defense got the better of the offense in Thursday's practice. That was the general impression from the open media practice on Tuesday, as well.

Banker said Nebraska will scrimmage on Saturday.

More Notes,

- Brian Christopherson, Freedom Akinmoladun said he was playing at 255 last year. He's 270 now.

- Mike Schaefer, Nebraska's 2016 theme: Playing fast.

- Sipple,

Banker was quick to point out that Rose-Ivey will receive his bachelor's degree Saturday.

The temperature was in the mid-90s for the workout, but Banker's attitude essentially was bring it on.

He added, "Obviously, we don't want anything health-wise to happen from a dehydration standpoint. I don't know, I mean, it kind of feels good to freely perspire ..."

The defense has the upper hand right now, according to junior cornerback Joshua Kalu.

"I think the defense kicked ass today," he said.

That's typical for the early stages of preseason camp.

"I'm pretty sure the offense is still putting in their scheme," Kalu said. "With the defensive side of the ball, you're able to fly around faster in the beginning. The offense has to get the timing right, and things like that."

Banker wasn't overly thrilled when a reporter told him that a defender -- Kalu wasn't referred to by name -- said the defense was getting the upper hand.

"I think whoever that defensive player is should shut up and not say anything, and say it in private if he wants to, but don't believe it," the coach said. "It's like one of those things ... You put it in your mouth -- if you taste it, it's one thing. If you swallow it, you'll probably die from it."

That was so very nice of Sipple to name names like that... ugh

These wrap-ups are certainly convenient for fans, but when you're simply ripping from outlets like OWH and LJS and repurposing here, I feel a little like downloading music for free. Those outlets pay these reporters and they don't get the clicks or the money (now that OWH charges).

I think maybe if you want to summarize what they say and include a link to the real source it might be better.

Sorry, I have a soft spot in my heart for the newspaper industry and feel bad it ia getting decimated. I'm also scared to death for the day that industry dies.

Honest question, is it not actually a 'boom' time to be a journalist? Forget about the actual newspaper as a medium, but online, isn't there just tons of opportunity to write for all sorts of places? The amount of online content being consumed daily is staggering. Do you think it is just a monetization problem because of low cost per click rates or low adoption of paid news subscriptions, or because of sharing? Curious to hear your thoughts on it.

Briefly, ad sales on print have gone down by billions of dollars while ad sales online have only made up millions. I believe users got used to free free free that it's hard to turn the pendulum back, but I'm hopeful that it does.

In short, yes I believe the problem is 100% in the monetization area. And now everything has become pay to play (from an advertisers perspective) which hurts the credibility of what we as readers consume.

We (consumers) need the free press to keep people honest from politicians and coaches and business executives. Or maybe we don't. Who knows anymore?

But I can't imagine what media is going to look like in 10 years.

If you saw Spotlight and appreciated it, imagine those days of a media company breaking a story like that are over. Or imagine the need for speed and lack of fact checking falsely accusing someone and having their reputation destroyed.

Anyway, rant over, but I don't believe we should be ripping content and sharing it elsewhere. Actually more than moral reasons, it is against the law (not that they will prosecute.).

Thanks for the reply. Good points there. Esp the ones about credibility.

Most of the information I get is off twitter.

But I give credit to who said the quote.....I'm not going to give them free advertising on another site, when the source is not their website.

There are pieces that are pulled completely from OWH. I won't get into a pissing match, but technically it is illegal to use their content for another website.

Yes cause they were saying the same thing on twitter. But I get your point.

That's why I provided a link to the first post.

does this quote strike anyone else as odd?

it is like saying "in a practice recently Johnny successfully completed a left handed layup after a cross over dribble"

or "in a drill recently Tommy Armstrong completed a pass to an offensive player"

Newspapers are responsible for their own demise. Sooner the better. The ability to find stuff online is in no way responsible for me not getting various papers. I refuse e-books, or any sort of free online book reading, because I prefer to have book and material in hand...so it isn't that I can't find stuff online. When Newspapers became slanted, I stopped buying. Simple stuff.

With you 100%. Seems like a big reach.

Would that this were true.

Unfortunately that part of the free press said to be 'Main Stream Media' is in lock step with each other. All tied together under just a few corporate owners and each acting to protect the other in a mutual protection racket. The truth be damned.

Agree with your sentiments but suggesting that they have always been slanted. It's when they all became slanted in the same direction, as the trees on the windy Kansas plains, I stopped buying.
