Sorry for the late start...had to work.

No media access tonight except BTN Live.

Notes and Quotes,

- Loved listening to Mike Riley on BTN live. Wow!

- DPE did dress out for practice.

- Dienhart, "@Huskers have nice collection of WRs. Alonzo Moore is making nice grabs tonight. I like Brandon Reilly. Frosh Stanley Morgan is special."

Loved MR's interview. He is a true student of the game, and even moreso knows how to TEACH the game. He and his staff are going to teach football to these kids and I can't imagine them not getting better as the season wears on.

We should be playing good ball when the B1G rolls around.

I think NU will be playing good football right at the start. This staff is so experienced and they know exactly what how to get the team ready.

I agree. But we should get better as the season progresses. Good coaches build up a team as they go.

What does this mean?

+1 means you agree, "I'm not seeing it" means you disagree. What are you trying to say?

I was responding to Kaz. I would also like to know what Howard Griffith said, but I have not seen the quote.

Gotcha. I agree, this Griffith quote seems to be a mystery. It would be great if someone enlightened us.

I agree. I love this staff and their ability to teach. The players seem very excited. BYU is a heck of an opening game. I'm excited to see them bring it.

I think this is how a lot of us have felt over the last couple of years. Loaded at certain positions, and unable to put it together on the field. Hoping they're right about the coaching change making the difference. I believe that it can. Still nervous about what Tom Deinart said about the QB situation, but I have faith.

Do you ever wonder if one of the reasons Bo couldn't get it completely together was every year he had deep talent at some spots and a bare cupboard in others? It was just a constant, maddening rotation. Still feels that way this year, but these are Bo's guys, after all.

-I liked that Coach came out right away and said he liked the talent on this football (while also acknowledging that we need depth still at certain spots...frankly I think 98% of D1 teams can share in that issue)
-I agree that others in that good coaching generally reflects an improving team as the season progresses
-We've been stuck in "good not great" mode for a while here-a fact evidented by the no Conf titles since '99. I think Dienhart "figure out" statement is really a reference to when are they going to not just be good, but great. Time will tell but all we're trying something different this time with the new coach, and it might just work...

Bo couldn't get it done for several reasons.
1. Inexperienced and ill suited to run a program like NU.
2. Some of his assistants were not qualified or competent for their positions at NU.
3. He was stubborn and unwilling to listen to some of his assistants that he should have.
4. He was stubborn and unwilling to change his complicated defensive scheme.
5. He created a culture of fear among his players that led to mental mistakes.
6. He viewed the media, administration and fans as adversaries.
7. Carl really put him behind the 8 ball from the start with his poor D line recruiting.
8. The poor depth at some positions was largely on Bo and Carl and a bit of an NFL mentality thinking they could just go out and get a "free agent" juco later to fill a hole. That worked to a point.
9. Bottomline was though that ultimately he self destructed under pressure and often his team did too. He flat out got out coached on multiple occasions.

I think it all started with number 4. Listening to guys like Bando talk about how they can now run to the ball on defense says a lot. We heard whispers of stuff like that through the years. Bo's pass D was often pretty good, but the better running teams really put it to us.

Well said! This is exactly the reason I think Coach Riley wins 10 or more games THIS YEAR. Look at that list, nothing on that list is even in the ballpark of Coach Riley.

Complexity was part of it. The other part is coaches/teams that had the ability to run downhill KNEW Bo would defend the pass first and NOT put a safety down in the box - that is why we were so hard to pass on - but also got blown off the field by the run game vs. Wisky and others.

Smarter teams with good rushing attacks figured out how to force certain players on our defense-- a linebacker or a safety-- to have to try to cover two different things at the same time. We looked so slow partially because they were forced into indecision by the keys the offense showed them. And if they guessed wrong on a 50/50 we got burned hard.

Bo was unable or unwilling to adjust the defense, so they just kept hammering at the same weakness.

I think a big issue was foresight and consistently filling positions. Seems like we would identify a position of need and load up on that spot the next recruiting cycle but at that point it's too late to have a guy ready to play at a high level...move a few years down the line and that position is in great shape and the problem has shifted to another position.

The defense worked well against the Big XII teams that were not as run oriented as those in the B1G. This was especially true with with Suh, Crick and a guy like Eric Hagg.

I went and watched some of the Husker highlights against Wiscy after reading this. Great post. Hence the jet sweep working EVERY TIME.
