Riley also thinks Nebraska can better recruit linebackers to fit a 3-4 than find the right defensive linemen for a 4-3.

“The recruitment of more linebackers, athletes — I think it’s actually easier to find those guys than four defensive linemen,” Riley said. “It adds more athletes to your team. When you look at kickoff team, punt team — all the special teams, you’ll end up with more guys who are in that 6-2, 210-to-245 range that can do lots of stuff for you.”

We always need good Dlineman.

Very True, just not as many having to land the quality run stuffers.

I also read in that same article I think that Riley was displeased with the way our defense played in the bowl game. He said that in watching the film of that game he noticed our defense falling into the same old bad habits they identified last year and which Riley wanted fixed. They weren't fixed. So Banker got the boot.
Results oriented business. Friendship only goes so far

Don't understand why, if you were banned as Tom, you would reincarnate yourself as Tom's wife.

I've stayed away from the comparisons, but can't any longer.

Why was Tulsa Tom banned? I've been around here forever, but I don't read all of the threads.

Gotcha, I didn't know if it was from one single thing he posted or the accumulation of it.

The 3-4 is SO versatile. You can recruit LBs of all shapes and sizes and use them all in different sets and packages. Those 3 up front need to be stout AF though

makes perfect sense with regard to LBs - much larger talent pool to draw from

with regards to defensive lineman > is it more difficult to recruit 2 DTs and 2 DEs in a 4-3 scheme or 2 DE and a NT in a 3-4 scheme?

my impression is that true 3-4 NTs are very rare and the DE in a 3-4 system is more of a tweener between a 4-3 DE and 4-3 DT

In a college setting I don't think your NT has to be the size of the NFL nose tackles. It doesn't hurt, but our best DT is always taking on double teams anyway so what's the diff? What the 3-4 does, is disguise much better where the rushers (4th and sometimes 5th guy) are coming from. Way tougher for an O line to block consistently. In many cases including when Bo was here, we were dropping true DEnds back in pass coverage. I really like the concept. Implementation will be the key and I really don't think it will be that tough. Going to be toughest on the backers IMO.

thank you for the response -- makes sense. However, despite these perceived strengths the majority of programs run a 4-3 base defense.

I agree there are many strengths to the 3-4 but suspect it is more complex and thus prone to more breakdowns. My suspicion is that this move to the 3-4 was in large part based on the dismal past and current recruiting of defensive lineman (particularly def ends). Our personnel pretty much makes a switch to a 3-4 mandatory due to the lack of division 1 4-3 defensive ends in the program.

I really don't think that has much to do with it. We've got some kids redshirting that at least a couple of former blackshirts, who have watched practices, think could play the traditional DE in a 4-3 very well. I also think most programs run what they grew up with and know (ie the 4-3). I really think that Riley meant what he said when he talked about how hard it is for an offense to scheme against a 3-4. He ran it in Canada and had a lot of success with it but Banker either wouldn't or couldn't run it in college. IMO, being a college recruiter/coordinator takes a ton of energy. I really liked him but Banker didn't seem to me like a high energy guy anymore. An older coach is fine if he still has the fire in the belly but Banker is just a couple of years older than me and there is no way in hell I would have the energy required to do the DC job anymore. I hope the guy enjoys a little time off and finds something fun to do. Heck, I think he might be an excellent pick up for somebody for a smaller college head coach.

Or maybe our coaches are finding it the hardest to coach against ? HCMR is well schooled in it according to many articles.GBR
